A variety of applications (App) installed on mobile systems such as smartphones enrich our lives, but make it more difficult to the system management. For example, finding the specific Apps becomes more inconvenient due to more Apps installed on smartphones, and App response time could become longer because of the gap between more, larger Apps and limited memory capacity. Recent work has proposed several methods of predicting next used Apps (here in after app prediction) to solve the issues, but faces the problems of the low prediction accuracy and high training costs. Especially, applying app-prediction to memory management (such as LMK) and App prelaunching has high requirements for the prediction accuracy and training costs. In this paper, we propose an app-prediction framework, named HiNextApp, to improve the app-prediction accuracy and reduce training costs in mobile systems. HiNextApp is based on contextual information, and can adjust the size of prediction periods adaptively. the framework mainly consists of two parts: non-uniform bayes model and an elastic algorithm. the experimental results show that HiNextApp can effectively improve the prediction accuracy and reduce training times. Besides, compared with traditional bayes model, the overhead of our framework is relatively low.

While the last two decades have seen revolutions in computing and communications systems, the next few decades will see a revolution in the use of every-day robotics and artificial intelligence in broad societal applications. Examples of such systems include sensor networks, the smart power grid, self-driven cars and autonomous drones. Such systems are driven by signal processing, control and learning algorithms that process sensor data, actuate control functions and learn about the environment in which these systems operate. the trustworthiness and safety of such systems is of paramount importance and has significant impact on the commercial viability of the underlying technology. As a consequence, anomalies in system operation due to computation errors in on-board processors, degradation and failure of embedded sensors, actuators and electro-mechanical subsystems and unforeseen changes in their operation environment need to detected with minimum latency. Such anomalies also need to be mitigated in ways that ensure the safety of such systems under all possible failure scenarios. Many future systems will be selflearning in the field. It is necessary to ensure that such learning does not compromise the safety of all human personnel involved in the operation of such systems. To enable safe operation of such systems, the underlying hardware needs to be tuned in the field to maximize performance, reliability and error-resilience while minimizing power consumption. To enable such dynamic adaptation, device operating conditions and the onset of soft errors are sensed using post-manufacture and real-time checking mechanisms. these mechanisms rely on the use of built-in sensors and/or low-overhead function encoding techniques to detect anomalies in system functions. A key capability is that of being able to deduce multiple performance parameters of the system-under-test using compact optimized stimulus using learning algorithms. the sensors and function encodings assess the

Small robots have numerous interesting applications in domains like industry, education, scientific research, and services. For most applications vision is important, however, the limitations of the computing hardware make this a challenging task. In this paper, we address the problem of real-time object recognition and propose the Fast Regions of Interest Search (FROIS) algorithm to quickly find the ROIs of the objects in small robots with low-performance hardware. Subsequently, we use two methods to analyze the ROIs. First, we develop a Convolutional Neural Network on a desktop and deploy it onto the low-performance hardware for object recognition. Second, we adopt the Histogram of Oriented Gradients descriptor and linear Support Vector Machines classifier and optimize the HOG component for faster speed. the experimental results show that the methods work well on our small robots with Raspberry Pi 3 embedded 1.2 GHz ARM CPUs to recognize the objects. Furthermore, we obtain valuable insights about the trade-offs between speed and accuracy.

By means of wave filtering a dynamic positioning system for ships can be developed which does not counteract high-frequency, wave induced oscillatory ship motion. For high-performance and energy-efficient operation, the wave filtering parameters must be adjusted according to the environmental conditions. this prevents unnecessary wear and tear of the propulsion system while still achieving a high level of control performance. If the characteristics of the wave disturbance vary during operation, an online update of the filter parameters is required in order to maintain the control performance. the filter parameter which is significantly influenced by the varied wave spectrum is the peak frequency of the wave-induced oscillatory ship motion. Hence, the online estimation of the peak frequency is the topic of this paper. the approach adopted is to determine the peak frequency based on the parameter identification of a low order auto regressive model. the practical problems that arise are addressed and modifications are proposed. the algorithms shown are tested and compared on the basis of real experiments on a model scaled ship with Voith-Schneider Propellers. the results show the improved reliability of the proposed detail solutions in terms of numerical robustness and capability for practical real-time application in continuous operation. In this paper, we address the problem of energy reduction when scheduling streaming applications with throughput constraints on homogeneous multiprocessor systems with voltage and frequency scaling capability. We propose a novel periodic scheduling framework which allows streaming applications to switch their execution periodically between a few energy-efficient schedules at run-time in order to meet a throughput constraint at long run. Using such periodic switching, we can benefit from adopting Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) techniques to exploit available static slack time in the schedule of an application efficiently. the experimental results, on a set of real-life streaming applications, show that our novel scheduling approach can achieve up to 68% energy reduction depending on the application and the throughput constraint compared to related approaches.

In a hard real-time embedded system, time constraint is one of the most important features. However, to pursue the ultimate average performance, traditional architectures such as x86 and MIPS abandon the support for timing semantics. Although time-aware programming models can define the timing of I/O behaviors, but the programming models are still based on the traditional architectures. this paper presents the Tickwerka SoC that can support temporal programming which including a Tickwerk Machine and a Tickwerk real-time executive. the Tickwerk machine is a MIPS processor that has a CP2 co-processor which has instruction-level access to cycle-accurate time service, time trigger assignment mechanism and time trigger task manager. Moreover, we also propose a Tickwerk real-time executive to provide a convenient LET-based temporal programming interface for the development of real-time embedded applications based on the Tickwerk Machine. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this Tickwerk Machine architecture through comparative experiment. the results show that the average output jitter of the Tickwerk Machine is about 1/20 of the traditional architecture, in spite that the Tickwerk Machine's frequency is 40Mhz while that of traditional architecture is 168Mhz.

From the last decade, researches on human facial emotion recognition disclosed that computing models built on regression modelling can produce applicable performance. However, many systems need extensive computing power to be run that prevents its wide applications such as robots and smart devices. In this proposed system, a real-time automatic facial expression system was designed, implemented and tested on an embedded device such as FPGA that can be a first step for a specific facial expression recognition chip for a social robot. the system was built and simulated in MATLAB and then was built on FPGA and it can carry out real time continuously emotional state recognition at 30 fps with 47.44% accuracy. the proposed graphic user interface is able to display the participant video and two dimensional predict labels of the emotion in real time together.

Programming distributed embedded systems gives rise to a number of challenges. the distributed nodes are typically resource constrained, requiring expert systems programming skills to manage the limited power, communication bandwidth, and memory and computation constraints. the challenge of raising the level of abstraction of programming such systems without incurring too high of an execution performance penalty is thus an important one, and many approaches have been explored in the literature. the work presented in this paper investigates a framework and domain specific language (DSL) to enable programming of such systems at a global network level. the framework enables the compilation, analysis, transformation and interpretation of high-level descriptions of stream processing applications in which information is received and processed in real-time. the ongoing research aims at investigating the following directions. Firstly, a framework to allow the manipulation and multiple interpretations of a stream processor description to support the heterogeneity aspect of devices. Secondly, a language to hide the low-level detail from the developer, while allowing the developer to add hints to enable more efficient compilations. thirdly, through transformations, different stream processing applications can be fused together to run on the same distributed network to make best of use of available resources. © 2017 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

the new internet of things paradigm allows for small devices with sensing, processing and communication capabilities to be designed, which enable the development of sensors, embedded devices and other 'things' ready to understand the environment. In this paper, a distributed model and an architecture for internet of things paradigm is proposed to perform complex computational tasks and run advanced applications. this novel computing system defines a network design with different levels which combines sensing and processing capabilities based on the Mobile Cloud computing paradigm.
