Containerization has become an essential approach in modern software engineering. Docker is a widely-used solution for separate services (like database, backend, etc.) and run them as a standalone, isolated process instance on the same host kernel. Kubernetes is distributed approach over Docker, it supports multiple hosts for the deployment. Kubeless is a new approach that aims at the functionwise deployment, so every subprogram can be deployed, scaled, operated separately, thererfore a functional programming approach can be realized in a modern, highly distributed realm. In this paper, we present our framework that provides a programming framework over Kubeless. However, many programming development tools are not available in this realm. Stack trace is a well-known construct in programming languages to follow the function calls. We propose a mechanism to retrieve the stack trace for realizing program errors easily. What is interesting about scientific databases?

Much of modern scientific research depends on databases, but do we need anything more than conventional database technology to support scientific data? One of the reasons for the development of the Grid is the sheer size of the datasets involved. this has introduced new problems for distributed data, distributed scientific programming, and the combination of the two. However there are other, equally important issues which demand new database technology. In this talk I want raise some of them. Annotation of existing data now provides a new form of communication between scientists, but conventional database technology provides little support for attaching annotations. I shall show why new models of both data and query languages are needed. Closely related to annotation is provenance - knowing where your data has come from. this is now a real problem in bioinforrnatics with literally hundreds of databases, most of which are derived from others by a process of transformation, correction and annotation. Preserving past states of a database - archiving - is also important for verifying the basis of scientific research, yet few published scientific databases do a good job of archiving. Past "editions" of the database get lost. 1 shall describe a system that allows frequent archiving and efficient retrieval with remarkably little space overhead. Finally, what do scientific databases have to do with multimedia information systems? Ostensibly nothing. However presentation of data has given us some clues about how to approach some of the problems above. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Designers and developers of database management systems (DBMS) build increasingly specialized efficient query optimizer in order to deliver improved performance. this query optimizer uses a database Cost Model (CM) that is embedded inside these DBMSs. Currently, database CMs have to be manually calibrated for each database technology evolution and new requirements which is a costly and error prone process. Moreover, writing CM programs on DBMS distribution code like PostgreSQL and MySQL for specific platforms is hard since this requires the code to be tuned at a low level with architecture of the query optimizer that are fundamentally based on general-purpose programming languages. In this paper, we propose a framework to design and calibrate automatically the cost model of the query optimizer automatically. Our framework provides a code generation that allow user applications to fully generate the cost of database operation of a target DBMS by changing the model specification (e.g. the data primitives of the used data layout, data indexing, and the chosen algorithm of database operations). In addition, to CM code specialization for a specific hardware platform requires a machine learning component that is used as an external tool to automatically calibrate the CM under design. A proof-of-concept prototype is implemented by considering the CM that exists in PostgreSQL optimizer.

the Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming model strikes a balance between the locality-aware, but explicit, message-passing model (e.g. MPI) and the easy-to-use, but locality-agnostic, shared memory model (e.g. OpenMP). However, the PGAS rich memory model comes at a performance cost which can hinder its potential for scalability and performance. To contain this overhead and achieve full performance, compiler optimizations may not be sufficient and manual optimizations are typically added. this, however, can severely limit the productivity advantage. Such optimizations are usually targeted at reducing address translation overheads for shared data structures. this paper proposes a hardware architectural support for PGAS, which allows the processor to efficiently handle shared addresses. this eliminates the need for such hand-tuning, while maintaining the performance and productivity of PGAS languages. We propose to avail this hardware support to compilers by introducing new instructions to efficiently access and traverse the PGAS memory space. A prototype compiler is realized by extending the Berkeley Unified Parallel C (UPC) compiler. It allows unmodified code to use the new instructions without the user intervention, thereby creating a real productive programming environment. Two different implementations of the system are realized: the first is implemented using the full system simulator Gem5, which allows the evaluation of the performance gain. the second is implemented using a softcore processor Leon3 on an FPGA to verify the implementability and to parameterize the cost of the new hardware and its instructions. the new instructions show promising results for the NAS Parallel Benchmarks implemented in UPC. A speedup of up to 5.5x is demonstrated for unmodified codes. Unmodified code performance using this hardware was shown to also surpass the performance of manually optimized code by up to 10%.

Some programs can produce string expressions with embedded code in other programming languages while running. this embedded code should be syntactically correct as it is typically executed by some subsystem. A program in Java language that builds and sends SQL queries to the database it works with can be considered as an example. In such scenarios, languages like SQL are called string-embedded and ones like Java { host languages. In spite of the fact such an approach of programs building is being replaced by alternative ones, for example by ORM and LINQ, string-embedding is still used in practice. Development and reengineering of the programs with stringembedded languages is complicated because the IDE and similar tools process the code embedded in strings as host language string literals and cannot provide the functionality to work with this code. To facilitate the development process, string-embedded code highlighting, completion, navigation and static errors checking would be useful. For the purposes of reengineering, embedded code metrics computation would be helpful. Currently existing tools to string-embedded languages support only operate with one host language and a fixed set of string-embedded ones. their functionality is often limited. Moreover, it is almost impossible or requires a substantial amount of work to add a support for both new host and string-embedded language. Attempts to extend their functionality often result in the same problem. In this paper we present the platform which can be used for relatively fast and easy building of endpoint tools that provide a support for difeerent string-embedded languages inside diferent host languages. the tools built for T-SQL and arithmetic expressions language embedding in C# are demonstrated as the examples of how the platform can be used. © 2015 ACM.

ABS (for abstract behavioral specification) is a novel language for modeling feature-rich, distributed, object-oriented systems at an abstract, yet precise level. ABS has a clear and simple concurrency model that permits synchronous as well as actor-style asynchronous communication. ABS abstracts away from specific datatype or I/O implementations, but is a fully executable language and has code generators for Java, Scala, and Maude. ABS goes beyond conventional programming languages in two important aspects: first, it embeds architectural concepts such as components or feature hierarchies and allows to connect features with their implementation in terms of product families. In contrast to standard OO languages, code reuse in ABS is feature-based instead of inheritance-based. Second, ABS has a formal semantics and has been designed with formal analyzability in mind. this paper gives a tutorial introduction to ABS. We discuss all important design features, explain why they are present and how they are intended to be used. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Naive parallel implementation of nondeterministic systems (such as a theorem proving system) and languages (such as a logic, constraint, or a concurrent constraint language) can result in poor performance. We present three optimization schemas based on flattening of the computation tree, procrastination of overheads, and sequentialization of computations that can be systematically applied to parallel implementations of nondeterministic systems/languages to reduce the parallel overhead and to obtain improved efficiency of parallel execution. the effectiveness of these schemas is illustrated by applying them to the ACE parallel logic programming system. Performance data presented shows that considerable improvement in performance can result.
