Algorithmic codes for scientific computing may exhibit diverse levels of tolerance to memory errors, depending on the program behavior when accessing data. there are factors that can be controlled in an HPC program and may influence the tolerance degree to memory errors. A characterization of the degree of vulnerability an application exhibits can help to improve its security as well as save time and resources. In this work, we study some main factors that may have an impact on the propagation of errors originated from memory accesses.

In this work, we address the challenge of designing an efficient warp scheduler for throughput processors by proposing SAWS (Simple and Adaptive Warp Scheduler). Differently from previous approaches which target a particular type of applications, SAWS considers several simple scheduling algorithms and tries to use the one that best fits each application or phase within an application. through detailed simulations we demonstrate that a practical implementation of SAWS can obtain IPC values that closely match the best scheduling algorithm in each case.

We studied routing protocols for Delay Tolerant networks devised to improve the message delivery performance in natural disaster scenarios. In this paper we propose the MinVisited protocol which during the transitive path to the message destination, selects the next node based on two features: (1) the most distant neighbor, and (2) the largest number of encounters with the destination node of the message. We compare our protocol with well-known protocols of the technical literature. the results show that the proposed protocol presents a low workload overhead with a number of hops lower than 2, and in average 95% of the messages are successfully delivered.

In this work, we present a parallel implementation of Hestenes-Jacobi-One-sided method exploiting the CUDA environment of Graphics processing Units (GPUs). Our approach is based on a scheme which performs multiple orthogonalization processes in parallel, across multiple rows and columns. Driven by an outer loop, executed on the CPU, the algorithm configures the CUDA grid with threads and blocks in order to allow the CUDA-kernels to use the shared memory and avoid multiple accesses to global memory. We use this GPU-parallel algorithm in order to accelerate the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) process which has a variety of applications in scientific computing, signal processing, automatic control and many other areas. Preliminar experiments show a significant improvements in terms of performances with respect to the CPU version and our previuos GPU version.

this paper aims at presenting Peer-To-Peer HPC a decentralized environment that facilitates the use of heterogeneous multi-cluster platform for loosely synchronous applications. the goal is to exploit all the computing resources (all the available cores of computing nodes) as well as all networks, e.g., Ethernet, Infiniband and Myrinet. Peer-To-Peer HPC functionality relies on a reconfigurable multi network protocol RMNP for controlling multiple network adapters and on OpenMP for the exploitation of all the available cores of computing nodes. We report on efficiency obtained with Grid5000 testbed by combining synchronous and asynchronous iterative schemes of computation with Peer-To-Peer HPC. the experimental results show that our environment scales well.

With the prevalence of multicore and manycore processors, developing parallel applications to benefit from massively parallel resources is important. In this work, we introduce a hybrid shared memory mechanism based on a high-level task design. We implemented task scoped global shared data based on the one-sided communication feature of MPI-3 and enable users to implement and create multi-threaded tasks that can execute either on a single node or on multiple nodes. Task threads of distributed nodes can share data sets through global shared data objects using one-sided remote memory access. We ported and developed a set of benchmark applications and tested on a cluster platform. the high-level task design and hybrid shared memory help users develop and maintain parallel programs easily, and the results show that the global shared data can deliver good RMA performance;the multi-threaded task implementations perform up to 20% faster than ordinary OpenMP programs and have better scaling performance than MPI programs on multiple nodes.

Numerous neuroscience experiments have suggested that the cognitive process of human brain is realized as probability reasoning and further modeled as Bayesian inference. It is still unclear how Bayesian inference could be implemented by neural underpinnings in the brain. Here we present a novel Bayesian inference algorithm based on importance sampling. By distributed sampling through a deep tree structure with simple and stackable basic motifs for any given neural circuit, one can perform local inference while guaranteeing the accuracy of global inference. We show that these task-independent motifs can be used in parallel for fast inference without iteration and scale-limitation. Furthermore, experimental simulations with a small-scale neural network demonstrate that our distributed sampling-based algorithm, consisting with our theoretical analysis, can approximate Bayesian inference. Taken all together, we provide a proof-of-principle to use distributed neural networks to implement Bayesian inference, which gives a road-map for large-scale Bayesian network implementation based on spiking neural networks with computer hardwares, including neuromorphic chips.

the need to support advanced analytics on Big Data is driving data scientist' interest toward massively parallel distributed systems and software platforms, such as Map-Reduce and Spark, that make possible their scalable utilization. However, when complex data mining algorithms are required, their fully scalable deployment on such platforms faces a number of technical challenges that grow with the complexity of the algorithms involved. thus algorithms, that were originally designed for a sequential nature, must often be redesigned in order to effectively use the distributed computational resources. In this paper, we explore these problems, and then propose a solution which has proven to be very effective on the complex hierarchical clustering algorithm CLUBS+. We present a parallel version of CLUBS+ named CLUBS-P with an ad-hoc implementation based on message passing: CLUBS-MP.

Writing correct and efficient parallel programs is hard. A lack of overview leads to errors in control- and dataflow, e.g., race conditions, which are hard to find due to their nondeterministic nature. In this paper, we present a graphical programming model for parallel stream processing applications, which improves the overview by visualizing high level dataflow together with explicit and concise annotations for concurrency-related dependency information. the key idea of our approach is twofold: First, we present a powerful graphical task editor together with annotations that enable the designer to define stream properties, task dependencies, and routing information. these annotations facilitate fine-granular and correct parallelization. Second, we propose seamless integration with the safe parallel programming language Rust by providing automated code structure generation from the graphical representation, design patterns for common parallel programming constructs like filters, and a scheduling and runtime environment. We demonstrate the applicability of our approach with a network-based processing system as it is typically found in advanced firewalls.

In this paper, we propose a method for the computation of a novel distance metrics, called Multi-Parameterized Edit Distance (MPED) among strings defined over heterogeneous alphabets. We show that the computation of MPED is hard and that several interesting application contexts can benefit from its application. We then present a novel implementation strategy based on an Evolutionary Heuristics, which we experimentally demonstrate to be efficient and effective for the problem at hand. Our approach paves indeed the way to the adoption of this new metric in all those contexts in which involved strings come from heterogeneous sources, each adopting its own alphabet.
