Evaluation of distributed Complex Event processing (CEP) systems is a rather challenging task. To simplify this task, we developed the open simulation framework for distributed CEP, called DCEP-Sim. the goal of this tutorial is to facilitate the process of using DCEP-Sim. Since DCEP-Sim is designed and implemented in the popular network simulator ns-3 we introduce the most important concepts of ns-3. Simulations in ns-3 are configured and executed though a main program called an ns-3 script. We use a simple example script to explain how simulations with DCEP-Sim are set up and executed. To give an idea how DCEP-Sim can be adjusted to particular needs, we explain how DCEP-Sim can be adapted (e.g., through changing the workload and the network topology) and how new distributed CEP solutions can be added by explaining how to add a new operator to DCEP-Sim.

the emerging edge computing paradigm has enabled applications having low response time requirements to meet the quality of service needs of applications by moving the computations to the edge of the network that is geographically closer to the end-users and end-devices. Despite the low latency advantages provided by the edge computing model, there are significant privacy risks associated with the adoption of edge computing services for applications dealing with sensitive data. In contrast to cloud data centers where system infrastructures are managed through strict and regularized policies, edge computing nodes are scattered geographically and may not have the same degree of regulatory and monitoring oversight. this can lead to higher privacy risks for the data processed and stored at the edge nodes, thus making them less trusted. In this paper, we show that a direct application of traditional performance-based query optimization techniques in edge computing can lead to unexpected data disclosure risks at the edge nodes. We propose a new privacy-preserving latency-aware query optimization framework, QueryGuard, that simultaneously tackles the privacy-aware distributed query processing problem while optimizing the queries for latency. Our experimental evaluation demonstrates that QueryGuard achieves better performance in terms of execution time and memory usage than conventional distributed query optimization techniques while also enforcing the required constraints related to data privacy.

In this paper, we present MtDetector, a high performance marine traffic detector that can predict the destination and the arrival time of travelling vessels. MtDetector accepts streaming data reported by the moving vessels and generates continuous predictions of the arrival port and arrival time for those vessels. To predict the destination for a ship, MtDetector builds a neural network for every port and infers the arrival port for vessels based on their departure port. For the arrival time prediction, we derive informative features from training data and apply Deep Neural network (DNN) to estimate the traveling time. MtDetector is built on top of DtCraft [1,2], a high-performance distributed execution engine for stream programming. By utilizing the task-based parallelism in DtCraft, MtDetector can process multiple predictions concurrently to achieve high throughput and low latency.

As the expected emerging Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) technologies, such as 3DXPoint, are in production, there has been a recent push in the big data processing community from storage-centric towards memory-centric. Generally, in large-scale systems, distributed memory management through traditional network with TCP/IP protocol exposes performance bottleneck. Briefly, CPU-centric network involves context switching, memory copy etc. Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) technology reveals the tremendous performance advantage over than TCP/IP: Allowing access to remote memory directly bypassing OS kernel. In this paper, we propose Megalloc, a distributed NVM allocator exposes NVMs as a shared address space of a cluster of machines based-on RDMA. Firstly, it makes memory allocation metadata accessed directly by each machine, allocating NVM in coarse-grained way;secondly, adopting fine-grained memory chunk for applications to read or store data;finally, it guarantees high distributed memory allocation performance.

To cope with the increasing information in sensor networks, distributed cooperative computing is used, to exchange and utilize the data. However, the data in each specific sensor network is heterogeneous with specific formats and semantics. thus, it is a huge conundrum to integrate, share and interoperate these sub sensor networks. To solve the above problem, a real-time novel distributed Cooperative model for Isomerism Multi-Sensor network (DCIMS), is proposed in this paper. the DCIMS architecture is based on distributed cooperative data caching and forwarding, which can handle massive, semantic and real-time data stream at each Sensor Gateway node. A new filtering algorithm named Post-Tree-Automata filter (PTAfilter) is proposed based on unranked tree automata and suffix technologies. the proposed filter can process real-time XML streaming (which contains uncertain semantic elements), and understand more complex subscription structures. Both simulation results and theoretical analysis demonstrate that the proposed method improves the query speed, reduces redundant transmission intermediate states.

Massive network document resources provide abundant retrieving and reading information, but it is consuming and exhausting to quickly search, understand and analyze those documents. In order to seek semantic support for searching, understanding, analyzing, and mining, this paper proposes a more convenient way which based on domain knowledge graph to annotate network document automatically. the method firstly adopts an upgraded TF-IDF model based on the contribution to quantify instances in knowledge graph, then analyzes the semantic similarity between unannotated documents and instances based on Jaccard distance and lexicographic tree distance comprehensively. After the accuracy tests conducted by collecting network documents, the results show the initial marking accuracy is up to 74%, successfully certifying the method being able to automatically annotate network documents in terms of semantics from the domain knowledge graph.

Smart Grids and Advanced Metering Infrastructures are rapidly replacing traditional energy grids. the cumulative computational power of their IT devices, which can be leveraged to continuously monitor the state of the grid, is nonetheless vastly *** paper provides evidence of the potential of streaming analysis run at smart grid devices. We propose a structural component, which we name LoCoVolt (Local Comparison of Voltages), that is able to detect in a distributed fashion malfunctioning smart meters, which report erroneous information about the power quality. this is achieved by comparing the voltage readings of meters that, because of their proximity in the network, are expected to report readings following similar trends. Having this information can allow utilities to react promptly and thus increase timeliness, quality and safety of their services to society and, implicitly, their business value. As we show, based on our implementation on Apache Flink and the evaluation conducted with resource-constrained hardware (i.e., with capacity similar to that of hardware in smart grids) and data from a real-world network, the streaming paradigm can deliver efficient and effective monitoring tools and thus achieve the desired goals with almost no additional computational cost.

Convolutional neural networks(CNNs) have been widely applied in various applications because of their ability to achieve accuracy close to or even better than human level perception. However, for large-scale CNN, the computation-intensive convolutional layers and memory-intensive fully connected layers have brought many challenges to the implementation of CNN on FPGA platform. In the existing implementations, the same parallelism strategy is used for the entire CNN model, such a "one size fits all" approach may result in resource utilization problem. To overcome this problem, this work proposes an FPGA-based accelerator, which consists of multiple processing elements(PEs), each is responsible for the computation of one layer in the network model. All the PEs are mapped on one chip so that different layers can work concurrently in a pipelined style. A methodology is proposed to maximize the throughput of the accelerator. In the fully connected layers, a pruning method is used to decrease the number of weights, which can save a lot of storage and computation. Moreover, a batch-based computing method is applied to the compressed data in order to reduce the required memory bandwidth. As a case study, we implement a large-scale CNN model, AlexNet, on VC707 Board which has a Xilinx FPGA chip Virtex-7 485T. the proposed accelerator can achieve a peak performance of 498.6 GOP/s and the power efficiency with the value of 21.3 GOP/s/W under 100MHz clock frequency, which outperforms previous approaches.
