Space- and time-efficient implementation of the Java object model 16th

While many object-oriented languages impose space overhead of only one word per object to support features like virtual method dispatch, Java’s richer functionality has led to implementations that require two or three header words per object. this space overhead increases memory usage and attendant garbage collection costs, reduces cache locality, and constrains programmers who might naturally solve a problem by using large numbers of small objects. In this paper, we show that with careful engineering, a high-performance virtual machine can instantiate most Java objects with only a single-word object header. the single header word provides fast access to the virtual method table, allowing for quick method invocation. the implementation represents other per-object data (lock state, hash code, and garbage collection flags) using heuristic compression techniques. the heuristic retains two-word headers, containing thin lock state, only for objects that have synchronized methods. We describe the implementation of various object models in the IBM Jikes Research Virtual Machine, by introducing a pluggable object model abstraction into the virtual machine implementation. We compare an object model with a two-word header with three different object models with single-word headers. Experimental results show that the object header compression techniques give a mean space savings of 7%, with savings of up to 21%. Compared to the two-word headers, the compressed space-encodings result in application speedups ranging from −1.5% to +2.2%. Performance on synthetic micro-benchmarks ranges from +23% due to benefits from reduced object size, to −12% on a stress test of virtual method invocation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Refactoring, in spite of widely acknowledged as one of the best practices of object-oriented design and programming, still lacks quantitative grounds and efficient tools for tasks such as detecting smells, choosing the most appropriate refactoring or validating the goodness of changes. this is a proposal for a method, supported by a tool, for cross-paradigm refactoring (e.g. from OOP to AOP), based on paradigm and formalism-independent modularity assessment.

Evaluating the effectiveness of slicing for model reduction of concurrent object-oriented programs

Model checking techniques have proven effective for checking a number of non-trivial concurrent object-oriented software systems. However, due to the high computational and memory costs, a variety of model reduction techniques are needed to overcome current limitations on applicability and scalability. Conventional wisdom holds that static program slicing can be an effective model reduction technique, yet anecdotal evidence is mixed, and there has been no work that has systematically studied the costs/benefits of slicing for model reduction in the context of model checking source code for realistic systems. In this paper, we present an overview of the sophisticated Indus program slicer that is capable of handling full Java and is readily applicable to interesting off-the-shelf concurrent Java programs. Using the Indus program slicer as part of the next generation of the Bandera model checking framework, we experimentally demonstrate significant benefits from using slicing as a fully automatic model reduction technique. Our experimental results consider a number of Java systems with varying structural properties, the effects of combining slicing with other well-known model reduction techniques such as partial order reductions, and the effects of slicing for different classes of properties. Our conclusions are that slicing concurrent object-oriented source code provides significant reductions that are orthogonal to a number of other reduction techniques, and that slicing should always be applied due to its automation and low computational costs. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Aspect oriented programming (AOP) supports the cross-cutting of concerns by means of aspects. the comprehension, maintenance and testing of AO systems may be more difficult than traditional ones, due to the large impact that aspects have on the static structure and dynamic behavior of the overall system. this thesis proposes the following main contributions to address these open issues: (i) an inter-procedural aspect control flow graph (IACFG) representing the interactions among the aspects and the object oriented (OO) components of an AO system;(ii) an approach to perform structural testing of aspect oriented programs based on a fault model specific to aspect oriented programs and on a set of coverage criteria referring IACFG;(iii) a metric model and a source code analysis algorithm in order to identify aspects with high level of impact and complexity in AOP systems. Several experiments were conducted in order to evaluate effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

CORBA is a standard proposed by the object Management Group (OMG) in order to promote interoperability between distributed object systems. CORBA provides a programming-language neutral Interface Definition Language (IDL) that describes the syntactic aspects of services supported by remote objects, However, CORBA IDL does not provide any means to specify the behavior of objects in an abstract and formal way. In the current practice, behavioral specification is provided either in plain English, or directly in the programming language chosen for the implementation, We propose to extend the CORBA interface definition of distributed objects by a behavioral specification based on high level Petri nets. We detail at the syntactic and semantic level how this formalism supports the features of the CORBA object model. We present a realistic case study to demonstrate our approach, Our technique allows specifying in an abstract, concise and precise way the behavior of CORBA servers, including internal concurrency and synchronization. As the behavioral specification is fully executable, this approach also enables to prototype and test a distributed object system as soon as the behaviors of individual objects have been defined. the paper discusses several implementation issues of the tool that supports the edition of models and their interactive excution, the high level of formality of the chosen formalism allows for mathematical analysis of behavioral specifications. Software architecture modeling and representation became a main phase of the development process of complex systems. In fact, software architecture representation provides many advantages during all phases of software life cycle. Nevertheless, for many systems, like legacy or eroded ones, there is no available representation of their architectures. In order to benefit from this representation, we propose, in this paper, an approach called ROMANTIC which focuses on extracting the architecture of an object-oriented system. the main idea of this approach is to propose a quasi-automatic process of architecture recovery based on the quality characteristics of an architecture by formulating it as a search-based problem. this last acts on the space composed of all possible architectures abstracting the object-oriented system.

In this demonstration, we present an Eclipse plug-in that automatically identifies type-checking bad smells in Java source code, and resolves them by applying the "replace conditional with polymorphism" or "replace type code with state/strategy " refactorings. To the best of our knowledge there is a lack of tools that identify type-checking bad smells. Moreover, none of the state-of-the-art IDEs support the refactorings that resolve such kind of bad smells.

Many reverse engineering approaches have been developed to analyze software systems written in different languages like C/C++ or Java. these approaches typically rely on a meta-model, that is either specific for the language at hand or language independent (e.g. UML). However, one language that was hardly addressed is Lisp. While at first sight it can be accommodated by current language independent meta-models, Lisp has some unique features (e.g. macros, CLOS entities) that are crucial for reverse engineering Lisp systems. In this paper we propose a suite of new visualizations that reveal the special traits of the Lisp language and thus help in understanding complex Lisp systems. To validate our approach we apply them on several large Lisp case studies, and summarize our experience in terms of a series of recurring visual patterns that we have detected.

In a ubiquitous computing environment, the state of devices may potentially change over time. Consequently, applications and services should be able to adapt to their environments. Having extensions with additional features is one possibility for adaptation. Developing software using the concepts defined for service oriented architecture promises easily adaptable software by loose coupling of services, which is a clear trend for software in 3G and B3G networks. Services are loosely coupled, in order to allow replacement and adaptation of service ensembles that suit the current situation of users. On top of this, services should optimally not be aware of extensions. Two approaches can be applied: the proxy pattern and the publish/subscribe architecture. the former allows service extension at runtime, while the latter enables communication between loosely coupled software. Implementation of both approaches results in an incompatibility problem. We introduce mutable references to solve this problem. With the proposed pattern one can implement publish/subscribe based services together with service extension at runtime via the proxy pattern.
