A key challenge for grid and cloud infrastructures is to make their services easily accessible and attractive to end-users. In this paper we introduce tagging capabilities to the Miner soft system, a powerful tool for software search and discovery in order to help end-users locate application software suitable to their needs. Miner soft is now able to predict and automatically assign tags to software resources it indexes. In order to achieve this, we model the problem of tag prediction as a multi-label classification problem. Using data extracted from production-quality grid and cloud computing infrastructures, we evaluate an important number of multi-label classifiers and discuss which one and with what settings is the most appropriate for use in the particular problem. © 2012 ieee.

Massive Parallel Sequencing is a term used to describe several revolutionary approaches to DNA sequencing, the so-called Next Generation Sequencing technologies. these technologies generate millions of short sequence fragments in a single run and can be used to measure levels of gene expression and to identify novel splice variants of genes allowing more accurate analysis. the proposed solution provides novelty on two fields, firstly an optimization of the read mapping algorithm has been designed, in order to parallelize processes, secondly an implementation of an architecture that consists of a grid platform, composed of physical nodes, a Virtual platform, composed of virtual nodes set up on demand, and a scheduler that allows to integrate the two platforms. © 2012 ieee.

We describe a middleware framework conceived to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of existing simulation applications by providing three capabilities: (1) access to grid-based and cloud-based execution, (2) access to advanced Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies such as simulation-based optimization, and (3) access to robust data processing and visualization. the framework has been applied to a variety of simulations in both commercial and open source programming languages employing both discrete and continuous modeling formalisms. A key design objective is to minimize the workload necessary to adapt a simulation for use with the framework. User experience to date reveals that the learning curve for the framework is reasonable, but further automation of key tasks would enhance the framework's utility. © 2012 ieee.

Centralized management of patient data is no more a viable solution. In many countries, patient identification restrictions due to privacy laws implies developing thorough mechanism to avoid duplicates and information loss. S-Net is a declarative coordination language and component technology primarily aimed at modern multi-core/many-core chip architectures. It builds on the concept of stream processing to structure dynamically evolving networks of communicating asynchronous components, which themselves are implemented using a conventional language suitable for the application domain. We present the design and implementation of Distributed S-Net, a conservative extension of S-Net aimed at distributed memory architectures ranging from many-core chip architectures with hierarchical memory organisations to more traditional clusters of workstations, supercomputers and grids. three case studies illustrate how to use Distributed S-Net to implement different models of parallel execution. Runtimes obtained on a workstation cluster demonstrate how Distributed S-Net allows programmers with little or no background in parallel programming to make effective use of distributed memory architectures with minimal programming effort. © 2012 ieee.

Today, many commercial and private cloud computing providers offer resources for leasing under the infrastructure as a service (IaaS) paradigm. Although an abundance of mechanisms already facilitate the lease and use of single infrastructure resources, to complete multi-job workloads IaaS users still need to select adequate provisioning and allocation policies to instantiate resources and map computational jobs to them. While such policies have been studied in the past, no experimental investigation in the context of clouds currently exists that considers them jointly. In this paper we present a comprehensive and empirical performance-cost analysis of provisioning and allocation policies in IaaS clouds. We first introduce a taxonomy of both types of policies, based on the type of information used in the decision process, and map to this taxonomy eight provisioning and four allocation policies. then, we analyze the performance and cost of these policies through experimentation in three clouds, including Amazon EC2. We show that policies that dynamically provision and/or allocate resources can achieve better performance and cost. Finally, we also look at the interplay between provisioning and allocation, for which we show preliminary results. © 2012 ieee.

MapReduce has emerged as a leading programming model for data-intensive computing. Many recent research efforts have focused on improving the performance of the distributed frameworks supporting this model. Many optimizations are network-oriented and most of them mainly address the data shuffling stage of MapReduce. Our studies with Hadoop demonstrate that, apart from the shuffling phase, another source of excessive network traffic is the high number of map task executions which process remote data. that leads to an excessive number of useless speculative executions of map tasks and to an unbalanced execution of map tasks across different machines. All these factors produce a noticeable performance degradation. We propose a novel scheduling algorithm for map tasks, named Maestro, to improve the overall performance of the MapReduce computation. Maestro schedules the map tasks in two waves: first, it fills the empty slots of each data node based on the number of hosted map tasks and on the replication scheme for their input data, second, runtime scheduling takes into account the probability of scheduling a map task on a given machine depending on the replicas of the task's input data. these two waves lead to a higher locality in the execution of map tasks and to a more balanced intermediate data distribution for the shuffling phase. In our experiments on a 100-node cluster, Maestro achieves around 95% local map executions, reduces speculative map tasks by 80% and results in an improvement of up to 34% in the execution time. © 2012 ieee.

In this paper, we address the problem of allocating disk resources to guarantee specified latency and throughput targets of VMs while keeping efficient disk I/O. Accordingly, we present two-level scheduling framework, namely Flubber, in Xen-based hosting platform that decouples latency and throughput allocation. the high-level throughput control regulates the pending requests from the VMs, in order to meet the throughput requirements of different VMs and ensure isolation. Meanwhile, the low-level latency control, by the virtue of the batch and delay EDF mechanism, reorders all pending requests from VMs based on the their deadlines, and batches them to the disk device considering the locality of accesses across VMs. We have implemented Flubber with intensive evaluations on Xen-based host. the results show that Flubber can simultaneously meet the different service requirements of VMs while improving the efficiency of the physical disk. In contrast to CFQ, besides that Flubber achieves the desired QoS of each VM, Flubber speeds up the sequential and random read by 17% and 25% due to the efficient physical disk utilization. © 2012 ieee.

DIRAC (Distributed Infrastructure with Remote Agent Control) is the grid solution designed to support production activities as well as user data analysis for the Large Hadron Collider "beauty" experiment. It consists of cooperating distributed services and a plethora of light-weight agents delivering the workload to the grid resources. Services accept requests from agents and running jobs, while agents actively fulfill specific goals. Services maintain database back-ends to store dynamic state information of entities such as jobs, queues, or requests for data transfer. Agents continuously check for changes in the service states, and react to these accordingly. the logic of each agent is rather simple, the main source of complexity lies in their cooperation. these agents run concurrently, and communicate using the services' databases as a shared memory for synchronizing the state transitions. Despite the effort invested in making DIRAC reliable, entities occasionally get into inconsistent states. Tracing and fixing such behaviors is difficult, given the inherent parallelism among the distributed components and the size of the implementation. In this paper we present an analysis of DIRAC with mCRL2, process algebra with data. We have reverse engineered two critical and related DIRAC subsystems, and subsequently modeled their behavior with the mCRL2 toolset. this enabled us to easily locate race conditions and live locks which were confirmed to occur in the real system. We further formalized and verified several behavioral properties of the two modeled subsystems. © 2012 ieee.
