Today CSCW systems are used in various scientific, economic, and industrial areas. the logical next step is that collaborators not only want to work together by sharing documents or by communicating via mail or chat. Rather it would be more interesting to meet colleagues, business partners, and customers in a virtual world, e.g. to discuss design and look of various products or concepts in 3d space and in real-time. thereby, it is important that the whole cooperative functionality remains available. Most developments that bring a virtual community to the computer desktop are proprietary solutions that only partially contain CSCW features. In order to solve this problem and to provide a satisfying and functional virtual environment our aim was the development of an X3d-based web3d client for a sophisticated CSCW system. As a server system we chose sTeam, a free CSCW system that is part of the debian Linux distribution. Hence, virtual communities are able to use sTeam and our 3d client sTeam3d to get a fully featured CSCW environment.

this paper presents a grid-based large-scale web3d collaborative virtual environment that has the capability of scaling across multiple geographically dispersed resources. the architecture consists of distributed mobile agents working cooperatively in supporting and managing the web3d collaborative virtual environments. the mobile agents' tasks include managing persistency and consistency of the virtual worlds, maintaining reliability and efficiency of user interactions, ensuring security and automonous and have the ability of migrating among hosts to maximize resource utilizations. Grid technologies allow the mobile agents to execute and communicate securely in multiple administrative domains. Grid-based scheduling components and polices are integrated to provide intelligent resource optimizations. Futhermore, a better load-balancing can be achieved by utilizing additional or more accurate information like data-user proximity and hosts' workload. the result will be a more scalable and robust architecture for supporting large-scale web3d collaborative virtual environment.

At institutions of higher education, students often lack certain mathematical knowledge required to cope with the actual course contents. this becomes particularly significant during the introductory phase of highly mathematical degree programs such as engineering sciences. thus, based on the example of a fundamentals of electrical engineering course, the authors developed a blended learning scenario which facilitates imparting mathematical expertise within the situated context of this specialist subject. A critical element of this approach is the abundant use of interactive web application-based 3d visualizations. this allows for clarifying complex mathematical problem statements within comparably short periods of time. In this paper, the technical implementation of the web applications using JavaScript and webGL with their corresponding advantages are described. Additionally, their utilization is discussed with regard to didactic considerations. A questionnaire-based evaluation with respect to students' acceptance of the visualizations and its influence on examination performance was carried out and concluding results are presented.

In this paper we propose an alternative approach to create animations in X3d. this approach allows extended flexibility to control animations during run-time. Among the extended features, it is possible to : control the speed of the animation: play the animation backwards: repeat any specific time interval of the animation and access any key-frame instantly. In order to illustrate this we propose a new node called TimeClock node. this node implements the same functionalities of a TimeSensor node but with the ability to independently set the time frame, overcoming current X3d limitations in the time model specification for creating animation with interpolators. We think this approach is useful for both animators developers and users: animators can carefully analyze on the fly their work, users can easily control an animation using a dVd like interface and developers do not need to worry about creating several different interpolators for the same animation. We present our current results along with some examples of usage.

the continuing advances in computer graphics and Internet bandwidths are supporting a gradual convergence between multi-user virtual worlds (MUVW), such as Second Life and OpenSim (SL/OS), and the nascent 3d web. However, significant networking barriers remain to exploiting these capabilities for developing the 3d web. these barriers include latency of content update and firewall blocking. In MUVWs the firewall and latency problems are related as the SL/OS network protocols designed over twelve years ago sought to minimise latency through the use of multiple concurrent UdP-based virtual circuits. Most firewall administrators are loathe to open up over fifty unknown UdP ports to accommodate such applications. New protocols now being deployed on the web such as SPdY, HTTP/2 and QUIC seek to reduce latency and routinely traverse firewalls. One of the key goals of the convergence between MUVWs and the 3d web is for MUVW functionality to be provided in a standard web browser, with optional links to other autonomous virtual worlds. It follows that as an incremental step towards the 3d web the use of these new web protocols in MUVWs should be researched. this paper details traffic management approaches in SL/OS MUVWs, clarifies 3d web concepts and terminology, explains the functionality provided by the new web protocols, and provides a mapping which postulates how their features can be exploited for the benefit of MUVWs as part of the convergence with the 3d web. the recent years have witnessed a rapid development in virtual reality technology and computer aided design, which accompanied by a vast amount of 3d content springing up from various domains, has given rise to an emerging need for methods by which they can be efficiently annotated before being searched and retrieved. In this paper a new approach to semantic annotation on 3d content is proposed. In this approach, much of the manual work on annotation is replaced with a semi-automatic process based on prior gathering of domain expertise. the geometric properties of objects and their spatial relationships are first automatically extracted and associated with a general ontology, the result of which is then matched against a set of user-defined rules to create annotations represented in an application ontology. the approach is web3d oriented so that it can take advantage of features of X3d format. It will be shown using a prototype system how this approach can succeed in accelerating the annotation process.

deep learning techniques have attracted many researchers in computer vision field to solve computer vision problems such as image segmentation and object recognition. this success also led to the implementation of deep learning techniques in 3d reconstruction. 3d reconstruction itself is a classical problem in computer vision that has been approached by many techniques. However, deep learning techniques for 3d reconstruction are still in the early phase, whereas the opportunity of the techniques is large. Hence, to improve the performance of such approaches, it is important to study the research and applications of the approaches through literature review. this paper reviews deep learning-based methods in 3d reconstruction from single or multiple images. the research scope includes single or multiple image sources but excludes RGB-d type input. Several methods and their significance are discussed, also some challenges and research opportunities are proposed for further research directions.

Trench Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) represent a significant advancement in power semiconductor technology, offering notable improvements over traditional planar IGBTs. despite these advancements, asymmetric wafer warpage remains a critical challenge due to the complex structure and high-stress processes involved from the early stages of fabrication. the oxidation process, essential for gate formation in trench IGBT fabrication, plays a pivotal role in inducing asymmetric warpage due to thermal stress, intrisic stress, volume expansion, and non-uniform oxidation. Accurate prediction and management of this warpage are crucial for enhancing yield and performance in manufacturing. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a valuable tool for predicting and managing warpage in semiconductor manufacturing. In this study, we employed two commercial simulation software packages, COMSOL and ANSYS, to investigate the emergence of asymmetric warpage in trench IGBTs resulting from the gate-formation oxidation step. Initially, 3d-CAd models of the oxidized micron trench structure were designed on a silicon (100) substrate using both COMSOL and ANSYS. Our results indicate that, by carefully selecting the thermomechanical properties of the hundred nm-size silicon oxide layer covering the micron-sized silicon trenches, it is possible to accurately reproduce the asymmetric warpage induced by the oxidation step in the two principal perpendicular directions. To further validate our findings, we compared them with experimental results at the 300 mm wafer scale by employing an independent homogenization method. Using ANSYS Material designer, we determined a homogenized layer of the trench-patterned oxidized structure. Also in this case, by carefully selecting the thermomechanical properties of the materials, we successfully replicated the asymmetric warpage at wafer level. these findings can be of help in predicting the behaviour of newly designed trench structures and mitigating t

Sign languages are visual languages used by deaf people to communicate. As with sopken languages, sign languages vary among countries and have their own vocabulary and grammar. therefore, the different deaf communities need a dictionary that associates signs to the words of the spoken language of their country as well as dictionaries which translate signs from a sign language to another. Several researchers proposed multimedia dictionaries for sign languages of specific countries, but there are only a few proposals of multilanguage dictionaries. Moreover, current multimedia dictionaries suffer from serious limitations. Most of them allow only for a word-to-sign search, while only a few of them exploit sign parameters (i.e., handshape, orientation, location, and movement) to allow for a sign-to-word search. Current solutions also commonly us pictures or videos to represent signs and their parameters, but 2d images are often misleading for a correct identification (e.g., recognizing an handshape can be very difficult due to occlusions). this paper aims at facing the above described issues, exploiting web3d technologies such as X3d and H-Anim humanoids to better understand signs and to simplify sign-to-word and sign-to-sign search, by proposing an online international sign language dictionary, called 3dictSL. the paper presents the client-server architecture of 3dictSL and authoring tools which allow deaf communities to extend the dictionary with their own language. As a practical case study, the paper discusses the implementation of Italian Sign Language (LIS).

In this paper we present our experience in using Virtual Reality Technologies to accurately reconstruct and further explore ancient and historic city buildings. Virtual reality techniques provide a powerful set of tools to explore and access the history of a city. In order to explore, visualize and hear such history, we divided the process in three phases;historical data gathering and analysis;3d reconstruction and modeling;interactive immersive, visualization, auralizaton and display. the set of guidelines devised helped to put into practice the extensible tools available in VR but not always easy to put together by inexperienced users. these guidelines also helped the smoothness of our work and helped avoiding problems in the subsequent phases. Most importantly, the X3d standard provided an environment capable of helping the design and validation process as well as the visualization phase. To finalize, we present the results achieved and further analyze the extensibility of the framework. Although VR tools and technologies are widely available at present, there is still a gap between using the tools and really taking advantage of VR in historic architectural reconstruction so that users might immerse themselves into this world and thus be able to consider various scenarios and possibilities that might lead to new insightful inspiration. this is an ongoing process that we think will increase and help current architectural development.
