An animation character, which has several duplications in one virtual scene, is usually represented just by a same 3D model. It results in monotonous and boring scenes. A micro-deformation method which can create an interesting scene include many 3D models of different shape from the same character is proposed in this paper. By geometric approximation the real-time algorithm of micro-deformation which uses elementary geometry and sweep geometry as the deformation reference objects is studied. the experiments on 3D game character demonstrate that the algorithm is real-time and effective. So it can be used in virtual scene to get an abundant and interesting scene. © 2011 IEEE.

this paper proposes an extended 3-D shape retrieval feature, which is based on a new scheme. In our method, continuous principal component analysis is used to align 3-D models into a canonical position. We then represent 3-D polygonal mesh as a 3-D multi-layer closed curve. It can capture the more feature of the 3-D models. the feature of the 3-D model is extracted from the 3-D closed curve by the Fourier transform. And the experiments show it is more efficient. © 2011 IEEE.

Since most System-on-Chips (SoCs) consist of heterogeneous IP core(s), application-specific Network on Chip (NoC) architectures are appropriate to meet the design requirements. the energy and performance optimization in the NoC design will continue to be the main design goal in nanoscale technologies. In this paper, we present a new hierarchal partitioning approach considering not only the reduction of wire length among cores, but also the optimization of switching power consumption subject to performance constraints. the experimental results on different benchmarks showed that our NoC topology synthesis algorithm can effectively save power and improve performance. © 2011 IEEE.

Halos are usually used to enhance depth perception and display spatial relationships in illustrative visualization. In this paper, we present a simple and effective method to create volumetric halo illustration. In the pre-processing stage, we generate a view-independent halo intensity volume, which contains all potential halos around the boundaries of features, based on the opacity volume on graphic hardware. During halo rendering, the halo intensity volume is used to extract halos only around the contours of structures for the current viewpoint. the performance of our approach is significantly faster than previous halo illustration methods, which perform both halo generation and rendering during volume rendering. Experimental results demonstrate volumetric halo effects and the efficiency of the proposed approach. © 2011 IEEE.

this paper describes an interactive system, called "IdiotPencil", that enables users to design pencil drawings directly from 3D polygonal models. the potential users of the system are professional designers or non-professional users. the system will automatically generates feature strokes, and provides fast and easy-to-use tools for hatching stroke design. Users only need to specify hatching carriers according to their experiences or intentions. the hatching tools can perceive hatching regions and arrange hatching strokes automatically. In this way, the system allocates most of manual, yet tedious works to the computer while retaining aesthetic control for users. Compared with the existing manual pencil drawing method, the system can speed up the user's drawing and reduce their drawing skill requirements. Several examples of drawings are given by the Idiot Pencil system. the compelling features are obtained from viewpoints of both handcrafted effect and high efficiency when using the computer-aided drawing system. © 2011 IEEE.

To synthesize a variety of texture images from examples in common PCs is an important topic in computer graphics. this paper proposed a novel patch-based image hybrids synthesis method, which can generate plausible results with visual diversity. First, image analysis was performed to build an effective data structure for synthesizing samples in a fast way which can maintain the texture structure. In the image analysis phase, the candidate patch set was built for each position. then, various hybrid images were generated using patch-based texture synthesis method. Poisson editing algorithm and deblurring techniques were further adopted to optimize the results. Various experiments showed that this new method can hybrid sample images with large color difference, which can also overcome the less smooth boundary problem of the conventional synthesis methods. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, we present an example-driven symbol recognition algorithm based on its key features in cad engineering drawings. When user provides an example of a specific symbol, the input symbol is analyzed and its features are extracted automatically. Based on the relation representation, the constrained tree with key feature priority can be established for this type of symbol. By this means, the symbol library can be built and expanded automatically in order to handle variety engineering drawings. In the next stage of the recognition processes, we first locate the key feature nodes in drawings, and then find other elements around which satisfy the topology structure of constrained tree. If all the elements and constrains in the tree are found, the symbol object will be recognized. Because of the accurate position, unnecessary matching calculations are greatly reduced. Experimental results validate that our approach is effective. © 2011 IEEE.

Many important alpha matting algorithms are proposed in recent years, which focus on how to solve the alpha value on image interactively. However, few papers discuss about why the border of opaque object in image is half-transparent. In this paper, we show how the optical principles produce the translucent effect on photography. We denote the matting problem in a unified form, by which form, we can analyze and compare different matting algorithm by comparing their sampling function and matting matrix. Our work can help us to propose and evaluate new matting algorithm. We also expand our framework to video matting and get an enhanced video matting algorithm. © 2011 IEEE.

In order to inspire and assist designers to create novel 3D animation modelings, an improved cellular genetic algorithm with evolutionary rules is proposed in this paper and applied in 3D animation modeling design. In this algorithm, ACIS rule expressions are used for deforming the initial 3D animation modeling created by Maya or 3D Max, and human-computer interaction which used expert knowledge to determine fitness function values of individuals is adopted to evaluate generated modelings. Tree-structure encoding is used for the generation and evolution of ACIS rule expressions and an evolutionary rule based on expert knowledge is introduced to reduce the number of human-computer interactions. Besides, a prototype system, called 3D Animation Modeling design System, is developed based on the proposed algorithm. the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can automatically and efficiently generate a series of creative 3D animation modelings and reduce the number of human-computer interactions to some extent. © 2011 IEEE.

While many approaches have been developed to visualize 3D city scenes, most of them exhibit the visualization results in a uniform rendering style. this paper presents an expressive rendering approach for visualizing large-scale 3D city scenes with various rendering styles integrated in a seamless way. Each view is actually a combination of the photorealistic rendering, the nonphotorealistic rendering, and the line drawing, so as to highlight the information that is interesting for the users and de-emphasize the other that is less important. At run-time, the users are allowed to specify their interested locations with pre-determined 3D landmarks. Our system automatically computes the salience of each location and visualize the entire scene with emphasis in the area of interests. the GPU-based implementation enables real-time performance, and demonstrates outstanding practicality. © 2011 IEEE.
