Projection of three-dimensional space onto a two-dimensional surface relies on the computergraphics camera based in design on the camera obscura. Geometrical limitations of this model lead to perspective distortions in wide-angle projections. Including the camera model, our approach is to involve the human perception in order to create a realistic spatial impression by a two-dimensional image. this paper discusses the influence of multi-perspective on three-dimensional computergraphics in virtual worlds based on the rules of perspective projection enhanced by characteristics of visual perception and techniques of Renaissance painting. the aim is to provide human-centered interfaces for an efficient and coherent communication of spatial information in virtual worlds to support avatar-mediated interaction with its need for correct depiction of human figures concerning proportion and orientation. To this end, we explain an object-based and introduce a camera-based computergraphics procedure to prevent projective distortions and misalignments.

the performance of current computer-aideddesign (cad) systems is still far from the satisfaction of conceptual designers. this paper presents a VR-based cad system for conceptual design by applying VR interfaces and geometric modelling techniques to improve the human computer interaction. the system uses an electronic data glove as an input device so that conceptual designers are allowed to use hand gestures to conduct various geometric shape operations instead of depending solely on keyboard and 2D mouse. We employ the 3D GUIs for enhancing the gesture interface. the implemented shape modelling techniques offered by the system include: destruction, construction, and techniques for freeform feature creation and modification. the destructive techniques allow the user to arbitrarily sculpt an existing part by means of sculpting tools. the constructive techniques allow the user to assemble an object by using a collection of feature objects, by either adding or subtracting feature objects from the model. the system also offers several novel methods for facilitating intuitive modification of freeform curves and surfaces.

Accurate calculation of direct solar radiation with current methods is slow and frequently requires oversimplification of building geometry to obtain expedient performance simulations. this paper describes the use of a fast new method for calculating direct solar gains on architectural cad models at any stage in design. A pre-processing module computes direct incident solar radiation with high accuracy several orders of magnitude faster than common analytical approaches. the technique is illustrated using preliminary cad models of two existing buildings that are gradually made more complex through the addition of intricate louvered shading devices, foliage, and adjacent urban structures. Each refinement allows EnergyPlus to calculate much more accurate direct solar gain data with only minimal increase in pre-processing time and no effect on energy simulation time.

In this paper, a simulation tool for passive design considering indoor and outdoor radiation environment using a three-dimensional computer- aideddesign (3D-cad) system is developed. this tool predicts surface temperature distribution on indoor and outdoor surfaces of a building considering the spatial geometry, materials used, and solar shading. A radiation model algorithm with a high-resolution voxel model was developed to calculate surface temperature distribution and mean radiant temperature (MRT) distribution while considering the detailed spatial design. the results of the application of this developed tool to a passive design housing using direct heat gain and deciduous tree cover confirmed that this simulation tool is useful for evaluating the effect of passive design on the thermal environment at the design stage.

Researchers agree that it is critical that EDA algorithms exploit future platforms and explore the use of parallel algorithms as we move to the manycore era. this paper describes the implementation of the TimberWolf placement algorithm using CUDA and demonstrates the applicability of GPUs in accelerating electronic design automation tools. the algorithm has been implemented on a Xeon Workstation using C, and achieved a substantial acceleration on an Nvidia Tesla C2070 card.

the concept that design is a social process is well established in the research literature. Following the tradition of ethnographic methods used to study design in context, this paper describes a 12-month research study conducted with a US residential homebuilder. the study utilizes the concurrent design process to elicit tacit interface knowledge and explicitly define it using 3D cad models. three-dimensional cadgraphics were used as a concurrent design tool to provide visual representations of product and actor interfaces. More importantly, these tools created conversations that otherwise would not have taking place in traditional design process. Out of necessity, and following the spirit of the concurrent design process, the tool was modified to include intermediate production objects (IPOs) for transferring production details to field level workers. the concept of concurrent design for production (CDP) is introduced as an extension of concurrent designthat provides a method for improving onsite construction processes.
