We introduce a non-uniform composition that integrates multiple rendering styles in a picture driven by an importance map. this map, either issued from saliency estimation or designed by a user, is introduced both in the creation of the multiple styles and in the final composition. Our approach accommodates a variety of stylization techniques, such as color desaturation, line drawing, blurring, edge-preserving smoothing and enhancement. We illustrate the versatility of the proposed approach and the variety of rendering styles on different applications such as images, videos, 3D scenes and even mixed reality. We also demonstrate that such an approach may help in directing user attention.

Halos are usually used to enhance depth perception and display spatial relationships in illustrative visualization. In this paper, we present a simple and effective method to create volumetric halo illustration. In the pre-processing stage, we generate a view-independent halo intensity volume, which contains all potential halos around the boundaries of features, based on the opacity volume on graphic hardware. During halo rendering, the halo intensity volume is used to extract halos only around the contours of structures for the current viewpoint. the performance of our approach is significantly faster than previous halo illustration methods, which perform both halo generation and rendering during volume rendering. Experimental results demonstrate volumetric halo effects and the efficiency of the proposed approach.

An ubiquitous problem of building performance simulation (BPS) - and the use of digital technology in general - is finding a method for archiving and documenting simulation results from different projects as well as from different design alternatives within the same project. In order to address the problem of data accessibility and organization, this paper proposes an advanced results filtering, organizing and displaying program that is capable of extracting key simulation information from dozens of previous projects and project variants. Simulating the local behavior of small pedestrian groups among a crowd is an emerging problem. Small groups are commonly found in general crowds and their behavior are significantly distinguished from that of individual pedestrians. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to simulate the walking behavior of such small groups. We construct dynamic group formations which not only facilitate easy communication between members within the same group but also adapt to the environment constraint. Moreover, an extended collision avoidance algorithm based on Optimal Reciprocal Collision Avoidance (ORCA) is proposed taking into account the factors of group cohesion and reaction flexibility so as to generate diverse interaction behavior between walkers. Several examples demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

While many approaches have been developed to visualize 3D city scenes, most of them exhibit the visualization results in a uniform rendering style. this paper presents an expressive rendering approach for visualizing large-scale 3D city scenes with various rendering styles integrated in a seamless way. Each view is actually a combination of the photorealistic rendering, the nonphotorealistic rendering, and the line drawing, so as to highlight the information that is interesting for the users and de-emphasize the other that is less important. At run-time, the users are allowed to specify their interested locations with pre-determined 3D landmarks. Our system automatically computes the salience of each location and visualize the entire scene with emphasis in the area of interests. the GPU-based implementation enables real-time performance, and demonstrates outstanding practicality.

In this paper, we proposed a nonlinear subdivision scheme based on tangent vector, withthe purpose of offsetting the deficiencies of Dyn's 4-point method and other classical linear subdivision schemes in the control of shape of subdivision curves. this method has a clear geometric meaning and the property of convexity preserving. theoretical analysis show that the limit curve of this method is G1 continuous without self-intersection. Several examples are given to show the effectiveness of the scheme.
