In this paper, we identify the computational requirements for structural pattern analysis, particularly for the operations of spatial grouping and matching. We describe two such algorithms that are in wide use here at USC and discuss approaches to reducing their execution times via parallel implementation. We provide brief descriptions and results of two research projects geared generally, toward the parallel implementation of computer vision systems and specifically, towards these algorithms.

this paper presents a hierarchical motion estimation method considering both a large spatial and temporal support. the problem of motion estimation is formulated as a time-varying parameter estimation problem. the main advantage of the proposed algorithm is its ability to constrain the computation of the flow field spatially and temporally at the same time, by defining each motion parameter as a linear combination of some orthogonal time functions. the number of time basis varies according to the complexity of the movement and is determined automatically by means of a multiresolution approach and of statistical tests. We also present two different applications which underline the validity of the chosen approach.

the fast retrieval method of English translation corpus based on Top-k query algorithm is a technology to retrieve the most commonly used words in English translation corpus. the top k query algorithm uses the first k most commonly used words to retrieve all other words in the text, and then returns them to the user. this technique uses it to find out which word in the Chinese translation corpus is more commonly used than other words. the fast retrieval method of English translation corpus is a kind of machine translation, which uses statistical technology to obtain high-quality results at low computational cost. It is the most commonly used method to translate text into another language, and is widely used in many applications, such as automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, web search engine and so on. Compared with other methods, the main advantage of this technology is that it can process very large data sets without significant quality loss. Since then, this method has been widely used and studied by many researchers in various fields such as computer science, linguistics, information retrieval and natural language processing. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In the paper adaptive application of morphological image processing is analysed and a simplified parameter modification technique is proposed. Based on a novel approach the number of control parameters ("filter-taps") of adaptive operations can be reduced if some a priori information about the input image is available. the convergency behavior and the prediction error of the new adaptation scheme is analyzed and compared to the classical approach. Finally, some applications of the proposed method is demonstrated.

this paper addresses the problem of rigid and nonpolyhedral object tracking in complex environments without a priori knowledge neither on objects nor on the camera motion. the key of our approach is to propose a robust curve based tracking algorithm founded on an iterative registration method and exploiting our rigid snake model. In order to ensure the convergence of the tracking process, we then present supervision strategies we have developed to control both the prediction step and the snake convergence. Finally, since recovering accurate contour localization is important for reconstruction task, we propose a cooperative use of the snake model and of a corner detector to finely detect piecewise curved contours.

the conventional ordinary least squares (OLS) method of fitting a line to a set of data points is very unreliable when the amount of random noise in the input (such as an image) is significant compared with the amount of data that is correlated with the lane itself. In this paper we present an analytic method of separating the data of interest from the outliers. We assume that the overall data (i.e., the line data plus the noise) can be modeled as a mixture of two statistical distributions. Applying a variant of the method of moments (MoM) to the assumed model yields an analytic estimate of the desired line.

For SIMD computers, using virtual processors, a common strategy for mapping the processors on the image data is to apply one processor per pixel. For operations on gray level images it is a good approach, but for operations on binary images many of the available processors are idle and not used in the calculation. this paper presents some common binary operations on a new and more compact representation of the binary objects in an image, which leads to a more efficient processor utilisation and faster algorithms. the implementations are for a Connection Machine/200. the new data representation is tested on a typical application: the separation of touching objects.
