Synchronization of sensor devices is crucial for concurrent data acquisition. Numerous protocols have emerged for this task, and for some multi-sensor setups to operate synchronized, a conversion between deployed protocols is needed. this paper presents a bare-metal implementation of a Tri-Level Sync signal generator on a microcontroller unit (MCU) synchronized to a master clock via the IEEE 1588 Precision time Protocol (PTP). Cameras can be synchronized by locking their frame generators to the Tri-Level Sync signal. As this synchronization depends on a stable analog signal, a careful design of the signal generation based on a PTP-managed clock is required. the limited tolerance of a camera to clock frequency adjustments for continuous operations imposes rate-limits on the PTP-controller. Simulations using a software model demonstrate the resulting controller instabilities from rate-limiting. this problem is addressed by introducing a linear prediction mode to the controller, which estimates the realizable offset change during rate-limited frequency alignment. By adjusting the frequency in a timely manner, a large overshoot of the controller can be avoided. Additionally, a cascading controller design that decouples the PTP from the clock update rate proved to be advantageous to increase the camera's tolerable frequency change. this paper demonstrates that a MCU is a viable platform to perform PTP-synchronized Tri-Level Sync generation. Our open source implementation is available for use by the research community at https://***/IMS-AS-LUH/t41-tri-sync-ptp.

With the new advancements in cloud computing and internet of things (IoT), mobile applications are transforming the healthcare sector offering solutions for both users and researchers. the massive amounts of data generated by these kinds of applications can be used by researchers to reduce medical errors, for disease prevention, real-time alerts and patient monitoring. the aim of this paper is to present a solution for a mobile application for fitness and dieting, which can help users achieve a healthier lifestyle, through an interactive approach. the technologies used to achieve the goal are Flutter SDK for the frontend, allowing for an interactive, cross-platform application and Firebase for the backend and database services, a cloud solution allowing for data gathering that could be used in analysis and diagnosis. the article's scientific contribution includes not only helping in the process of gathering pertinent data for healthcare analysis through the mobile applications, but also reviewing previous research done in the field. © 2025 the Author(s).

In response to the increasing complexity of distributed embedded systems, self-organizing systems have emerged. One such system is organic computing, which draws inspiration from biological organisms. It improves the adaptability and robustness of distributed embedded systems by allocating tasks to computing nodes on demand. However, this approach has drawbacks in terms of determinism and dependability. To address these limitations, time-triggered communication concepts have been incorporated to form a time-triggered organic computing architecture (TTOC). Herein, task executions and message communications are predefined by a table schedule based on a list scheduler. the schedule table, i.e., the order in which application tasks get executed, has been validated by a previously introduced TTOC simulator. the next step towards a real-world usage of TTOC is a discrete-event simulator that includes the simulation of actual time-triggered communication protocols such as TSN. OMNeT++ provides such discrete-event simulations. Both the TTOC simulator and OMNeT++ are discrete-event simulators. Consequently, this paper presents a discrete-event-based co-simulation interface that can control the execution of the TTOC simulator and OMNeT++. © 2024 IEEE.

Fusing Radar and Lidar sensor data can fully utilize their complementary advantages and provide more accurate reconstruction of the surrounding for autonomous driving systems. Surround Radar/Lidar can provide 360 degrees view sampling with the minimal cost, which are promising sensing hardware solutions for autonomous driving systems. However, due to the intrinsic physical constraints, the rotating speed of surround Radar, and thus the frequency to generate Radar data frames, is much lower than surround Lidar. Existing Radar/Lidar fusion methods have to work at the low frequency of surround Radar, which cannot meet the high responsiveness requirement of autonomous driving systems. this paper develops techniques to fuse surround Radar/Lidar with working frequency only limited by the faster surround Lidar instead of the slower surround Radar, based on widely-used object detection model called MVDNet. the basic idea of our approach is simple: we let MVDNet work with temporally unaligned data from Radar/Lidar, so that fusion can take place at any time when a new Lidar data frame arrives, instead of waiting for the slow Radar data frame. However, directly applying MVDNet to temporally unaligned Radar/Lidar data greatly degrades its object detection accuracy. the key information revealed in this paper is that we can achieve high output frequency with little accuracy loss by enhancing the training procedure to explore the temporal redundancy in MVDNet so that it can tolerate the temporal unalignment of input data. We explore several different ways of training enhancement and compare them quantitatively with experiments.

the growth of computing continues to place power demands on an ever-stressed energy grid. embedded systems are a part of that demand. Focusing on the architecture of the System-On-Chip (SoC) is an area of interest for power optimization. Intellectual Property (IP) blocks that provide support functionality for SoC designs are often licensed from vendors who provide little or no visibility into their inner workings, requiring reliance on vendor-supplied metrics. this work proposes TurbOS, a small footprint open-source operating system (OS) for reducing required resources within IP blocks. TurbOS utilizes the Turbo9 microprocessor, and is just 20% the size of the popular FreeRTOS operating system, while providing the same functionality. For certain applications, the number of IP blocks can be reduced without loss of functionality.

S-transform is a prominent time-frequency representation suitable for various practical applications. Our previous research has been focused on hardware implementations of its several forms. this paper represents continuation of efforts towards the proposal of design principles that keep the hardware complexity at the reasonable level and enable implementation of the data-driven S-transform. the influence of the presented principles on the usage of hardware resources during implementation is analyzed, along with the comparative analysis of realizations of different S-transform forms. © 2023 IEEE.

Artificial intelligence has driven significant advancements in industrial applications, particularly in automation and process control. Deep learning models, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have been particularly effective in these applications. this study presents a Pick and Place solution utilizing a SCARA robotic manipulator and a computer vision system based on the YOLOv8 model. Communication between the computer vision system and the SCARA robot is achieved via socket TCP, enabling real-time detection of parts and optimizing the precision of robotic operations. the five YOLOv8 models trained were evaluated, with the highest accuracy model achieving 96.7%. Using the Raspberry Pi 4 to embed the vision system, the inference time for all models was greater than 800 ms. thus, to use it in an industrial scenario, the inference time should be analyzed.

the paper presents a comparative analysis of popular deep learning-based object detectors, focusing on evaluating their real-time performance on embedded platforms. the objective was to identify the optimal algorithm that can efficiently operate within limited computational resources and memory constraints of embedded systems while minimizing energy consumption. We tested a set of popular detectors, such as Faster R-CNN, YOLO, and SSD MobileNet and evaluated their performance on the testing platform with CUDA cores. A faster variant of bounding box suppression, blazing fast Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS), was employed to enhance efficiency. Additionally, the generalized intersection over union (GIoU) metric was adopted as the optimal testing method, allowing for more accurate object localization and detection. Results demonstrate that the SSD MobileNet-V2 and Tiny YOLO detectors exhibit promising real-time performance on embedded platforms, although their accuracy is diminished compared to larger models. © 2023 IEEE.

For successful operation, any video-based Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS) application requires real-time road traffic information or characteristics such as speed, density, average delay, categorization, and so on. this paper proposes the Multiple Contiguous Virtual Layer (MCVL), a robust and unique vehicle identification framework that estimates any macroscopic traffic characteristics using computer vision algorithms on traffic video. this work mainly focuses on estimating a new parameter known as Histogram Differenced Value (HDV) for MCVL, which uses spatial color information to reveal substantial differences in traffic condition. Several benchmark traffic video datasets are used to test the performance and accuracy of estimations utilizing the proposed framework, with the results being discussed. the results indicate that using the proposed HDV parameter, the accuracy of the vehicle recognition process is improved with the combination of lowered computing cost of MCVL.

real-time systems are commonly used in safety-critical applications which require tasks to be completed before their deadlines, even in the presence of faults. thus, fault tolerance becomes essential to ensure a certain level of reliability in safety-critical real-time systems [1]. To achieve fault tolerance in computer systems, redundancy can be implemented either in space (spatial redundancy) or time (time redundancy) [2]. Unlike spatial redundancy which involves increasing hardware resources, time redundancy focuses on re-execution or multiple executions of software on the same hardware resources [3] and therefore is better suited for embedded systems with limited cost and size constraints that are subject to transient faults more often than permanent faults [2], [4]. © 2023 IEEE.
