Robust tracking of persons in real-world environments and in real-time is a common goal in many video applications. In this paper a computational system for the real-time tracking of multiple persons in natural environments is presented. the system integrates state-of-the-art methodologies for the analysis of movement and color, as well as for the detection of faces. Face detection is complemented by a face tracking module based on heuristics developed by the authors. Exemplary results of the integrated system working in real-world video sequences are shown.

As distributed object computing (DOC) middleware standards and implementations evolve over time, they invariably must support a growing number of protocols to remain interoperable. Memory footprints of middleware implementations can become large if a concerted effort is not made to prevent this growth. Large middleware memory footprints are problematic for important classes of distributed, real-time, and embedded (DRE) applications that have stringent memory constraints. this paper makes two contributions to the design of middleware to address key challenges of developing DRE applications. First, it describes the design of dynamically configurable general inter-ORB protocols (GIOP). Second, it explains how we applied patterns and Java features to minimize and customize the memory footprint of messaging protocols used in DRE middleware.

the increasing complexity of current real-time applications demands systems to make good use of the available computational resources. Guaranteeing timing behavior using traditional real-time scheduling policies is turning to be unfeasible, as these policies are based in pessimistic worst-case assumptions that pre-allocate resources even though they will be rarely used. the time-aware fault-tolerant (TAFT) scheduler presents a flexible scheduling strategy that allows the construction of schedules maximizing the CPU utilization. this work presents the use of the TAFT scheduler with computational intensive distributed embedded applications, in order to keep a high ratio of successful tasks completion and so guaranteeing its computational progress. More specifically, the paper sketches a "TAFT-based" fusion algorithm for laser-scanner data and derives the requirements that the execution of this algorithm has on the CPU-scheduling.

We have demonstrated an entire series of capacitive sensors using a multi-layer parylene/photoresist surface micromachining technology. the developed sensors are designed for total integration into parylene-based microfluidic systems for real-time system monitoring. Sensors have been demonstrated for the following applications: in-line pressure sensing (range: 0-35 kPa, resolution: 0.03 kPa); liquid front position and/or volumetric measurements (range: 0->50 pL, resolution: <5 pL); and dielectric measurements, which can be used to deduce fluid properties such as liquid composition. the reported sensor technology demonstrates versatility, high sensitivity, small footprints, and easy integration.

Soft computing (SC) and hard computing (HC) methodologies are fused together in numerous industrial and other applications. the aim is typically to develop intelligent systems that would be straightforward to analyze, their behavior and stability could be predictable, and the computational burden would be no more than moderate. All these goals are particularly important in embedded real-time applications. this paper clarifies the vagueness related to the fusion of SC and HC methodologies that slows down the acceptance of soft computing outside the computational intelligence community. We categorize the different fusion topologies to 12 core classes and 6 supplementary classes, and discuss the characteristic features of the SC and HC constituents in practical hybrid implementations.

the integration of multi-functional and reconfigured aspects into adaptive optics systems is novel for the Micro-electro-mechanical Deformable Mirror (MEM-DM) based applications being presented. It reduces the complexity, cost, size, and maintenance of the system, while increasing real-time flexibility. Multi-functional implies the inherent non-physical reordering a system aspects to produce desired outputs within a self contained autonomous operating system. Traditional solutions to adaptive optic systems required changing equipment (LCD's for Beam Shaping, Beam Splitters for Beam Splitting, Gimbaled mechanical devices for beam steering, etc.), which is not required with this innovative system design. Re-configurable implies the ability to continuously change the systematic operation of an autonomous system through intervention of logic that is designed proactively within the system that is reprogrammed in the field by remote configuration downloads via wireless and/or direct conductive media. the introduction of the 3-D Advanced Optical Phased Array (AOPA) and Phase Retrieval Techniques provides the engine that enables these advancements once applied to the MEM-DM array.

Live logging and posterity logging are the two basic applications for video databases. the former aims at providing effective annotation of video in quasi-real time and supports extraction of meaningful clips from the live stream; the latter provides annotation for later reuse of video material and is the prerequisite for retrieval by content from video digital libraries. Both require that information is adequately structured with interchange format and that annotation is performed, to a great extent, automatically. the video information structure must encompass both low-intermediate level video organization and event relationships that define specific highlights and situations. Analysis of the visual data of the video stream permits hints to be extracted, events identified and highlights detected. All of this must be supported by a-priori knowledge of the subject and effective reasoning engines capable of capturing the inherent semantics of the visual events.

Mandatory human participation (MHP) is a novel authentication scheme that asks the question "are you human?" (Instead of "who are you?"), and upon the correct answer to this question, can prove a principal to be a human being instead of a computer program. MHP helps solve old and new problems in computer security that existing security measures cannot address properly, including password (or PIN number) guessing attacks and application-level denial of service. A key component of this "are you human?" authentication process is a character morphing algorithm that transforms a character string into its graphical form in such a way that a human being won't have any problem recognizing the original string, while a computer program (e.g., an optical character recognition program), will not be able to decipher it or make a correct guess with nonnegligible probability. the basic idea of the MHP scheme is to ask an agent to recognize the string before its login attempts or transaction requests can be honored. Here a protocol is needed to send a puzzle to an agent, check if the answer supplied by the agent is correct, and most importantly make sure that the agent cannot cheat in the process. A number of system and security issues that relate to the protocol need to be addressed for the protocol to be secure, efficient, robust, and user-friendly. the MHP scheme contributes to the foundation of the computer security by faithfully implementing novel security semantics, "human," which existing cryptographic measures cannot express accurately. As many real-world security applications involve the interaction between a human and a computer, which naturally contains "human" as a part of its protocol semantics, we believe that the MHP scheme will find many new applications in the future.

this paper considers a class of embedded signal processing applications. To achieve real-time performance these applications must be executed on a parallel processor. the paper focuses on the multiring optical interconnection network used in the system and specifically on the performance gains associated with utilizing the bandwidth reconfiguration capabilities associated with the network. the network is capable of being reconfigured to provide designated bandwidths to different source-destination connections both across rings and within a ring. the applications each consist of a sequence of alternating communication and computation phases. the sequence continues until execution of the application is complete. the effect of reconfiguration on application performance is explored using simulation techniques. the results indicate that substantial performance gains (speedups of 2 or more) can be achieved for this application class.
