this paper considers a class of embedded signal processing applications. To achieve real-time performance these applications must be executed on a parallel processor. the paper focuses on the multiring optical interconnection network used in the system and specifically on the performance gains associated with utilizing the bandwidth reconfiguration capabilities associated withthe network. the network is capable of being reconfigured to provide designated bandwidths to different source-destination connections both across rings and within a ring. the applications each consist of a sequence of alternating communication and computation phases. the sequence continues until execution of the application is complete. the effect of reconfiguration on application performance is explored using simulation techniques. the results indicate that substantial performance gains (speedups of 2 or more) can be achieved for this application class.

the explosive growth of embeddedsystems in existing and emerging application domains is accompanied by unique constraints and performance requirements along multiple dimensions such as speed, power, and real-time behavior. Typically, these requirements are encapsulated in a few important components, or kernels, for example, for audio and video encoding/decoding, data compression, and encryption. Software implementations of these kernels executing on embedded microprocessors are inadequate to meet the requirements. Customization plays a central role in meeting these unique and specialized needs and has historically been realized by the development of custom hardware solutions such as fully custom application specific integrated circuits (ASICs).
However, each new generation of semiconductor technology is increasing the non- recurring engineering (NRE) costs associated with ASIC development and thereby making it feasible for only high volume applications and those with product lifetimes amenable to a long time to market design cycle. the increasing pervasiveness of embeddedsystems encompasses applications with smaller product lifetimes, shorter development cycles, and increasing cost containment pressures. Sustaining the continued growth demanded by the market will require technology to deliver performance characteristics of custom solutions while overcoming the twin hurdles of high NRE costs and long time to market of current ASIC solutions. Further, the embedded market is comprised of application segments covering a range of costs, volumes, and time to market needs. For example, components of 3G phones, set top boxes, color laser printers, color copiers, and network attached storage devices span a range of prices from on the order of a few hundred to a few thousand dollars and a range of volumes ranging from thousands to tens of millions of units. Consequently the approaches to customization are diverse.

E-collaboration and collaborative systems bring geographically dispersed teams together, supporting communication, coordination and cooperation. In this paper we review forty-four products and research prototypes that offer collaborative services. the findings of our survey provide a list of the basic collaboration services, such as non real-time discussions, email, whiteboard, real-time discussions, screen sharing, file & document sharing and document management, and the examined products are presented with regards to, those services. In sequence, they are classified to five functional categories, also defined taking into account the analysed features. In conclusion, important issues, of collaborative computing are touched upon, and areas, for improvement are identified.

In this paper we describe a general approach for dynamic and intelligent reconfiguration of real-time distributed control systemsthat utilises the IEC 61499 function block model. this work is central to the development of distributed intelligent control systemsthat are inherently adaptable and dynamically reconfigurable. the approach that is used takes advantage of distributed artificial intelligence at the planning and control levels to achieve significantly shorter up-front commissioning times as well as significantly more responsiveness to change. this approach is based on object-oriented and agent-based methods and aims at overcoming the difficulties associated with managing real-time reconfiguration of a holonic manufacturing system.

Expert knowledge is captured in the process design. In organisations knowledge becomes embedded in routines, processes, practices as well as norms and can be evaluated by decisions or actions to which it leads, for example measurable efficiencies, speed or quality gains. Knowledge develops over time, through experience that includes what we absorb from courses, books, and mentors as well as informal learning. In this paper we analyse workflow history and demonstrate that workflow management systems enable knowledge measurement.

Remote data access from disparate sources across a wide area network, such as the Internet is problematic due to the unpredictable nature of the communications source and the potential delays at the remote site. Current query plan scrambling techniques require all blocks from a relation be present to perform join operations based on an execution plan. Delays arising from the remote site can result in total abandoning of a plan and starting a new execution plan. In this paper we present an algorithm that uses block level query scrambling techniques that performs realtime query scrambling on relations with remote site delays. the algorithm starts scrambling as soon as there are a few blocks available from remote sites and continues scrambling as more blocks arrive. the algorithm utilises changing the query execution plan at the sub-tree level. We present an example that demonstrates the effectiveness of this algorithm.
