Fine-tuning large pre-trained models has become the de facto strategy for developing both task-specific and general-purpose machine learning systems, including developing models that are safe to deploy. Despite its clear importance, there has been minimal work that explains how fine-tuning alters the underlying capabilities learned by a model during pretraining: does fine-tuning yield entirely novel capabilities or does it just modulate existing ones? We address this question empirically in synthetic, controlled settings where we can use mechanistic interpretability tools (e.g., network pruning and probing) to understand how the model's underlying capabilities are changing. We perform an extensive analysis of the effects of fine-tuning in these settings, and show that: (i) fine-tuning rarely alters the underlying model capabilities;(ii) a minimal transformation, which we call a 'wrapper', is typically learned on top of the underlying model capabilities, creating the illusion that they have been modified;and (iii) further fine-tuning on a task where such "wrapped capabilities" are relevant leads to sample-efficient revival of the capability, i.e., the model begins reusing these capabilities after only a few gradient steps. this indicates that practitioners can unintentionally remove a model's safety wrapper merely by fine-tuning it on a, e.g., superficially unrelated, downstream task. We additionally perform analysis on language models trained on the TinyStories dataset to support our claims in a more realistic setup. © 2024 12th international conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2024. Complicated manual calculation and drawing often appear in circuit analysis, which brings difficulty to circuit analysis. Manual ways to analysis of the circuit is timeconsuming and laborious, and prone to errors. Python can solve the problem better in circuit analysis instead of manual ways. Python is a high-level, general-purpose interpreted programming language that is widely used in scientific computing and engineering. It also includes a vast collection of Python packages for scientific computing. this ecosystem of scientifically oriented libraries ranges from generic core libraries- such as NumPy, SciPy, and Matplotlib -to more specific libraries for particular problem domains [1]. 1So Python has many applications in circuit analysis, such as equation solving, curve drawing, logic calculation and so on. In this paper, we apply Sympy library of Python to solve the equations of branch current method, use Matplotlib library to draw the sinusoidal AC signal curve, and use programming language of Python to realize the design of logic which is also the realization of logic functions. With the rapid development of computer technology, the application of new technology and software tools in circuit analysis will greatly improve the efficiency of circuit analysis. © 2023 IEEE.

this study assesses the effectiveness of integrating infrared thermography (IR) and ultrasound (UT) technologies for the non-destructive testing of concrete bridges, addressing the critical need for advanced assessment methods amidst the deteriorating state of U.S. infrastructure. By combining the rapid, surface-level scanning capabilities of IR with the precise, in-depth analysis offered by UT, our research demonstrates a comprehensive approach to identifying subsurface anomalies such as delaminations, voids, and corrosion of reinforcement. the findings underscore the complementary strengths of IR and UT, highlighting their potential to significantly enhance the accuracy of infrastructure evaluations, optimize maintenance strategies, and ensure public safety. this integrated methodology proposes a balanced, efficient inspection process, advocating for further development in data collection, processing, and analysis techniques to improve the longevity and reliability of critical public works. © 2024 the Editor(s).

the primary goal of this paper is to identify the most used traditional project management (PM) practices in the construction sector, to guide construction project managers professionals on how to improve the success of their projects. Based on a comprehensive literature review, 34 traditional project management techniques were surveyed. the online questionnaire survey was distributed to 100 construction project management professionals, obtaining 38% response rate. the findings highlighted the most used traditional project management practices, such as kick-off meeting, teamwork, progress meetings, and reports. In contrast, the adoption of newer techniques, like earned value and statistical control charts, was found to be limited employed. While traditional project management techniques remain essential due to the linear nature of workflows in construction, the study suggests that there may be opportunities to integrate newer approaches that emphasize monitoring, analysis, and risk management more effectively. Further research on leading companies was recommended to develop strategies for managing increasing project complexity in the construction sector. © 2025 the Authors.

the Dedicated Infrastructure and Architecture for Near-Earth Astronautics (DIANA) is a design concept for a self-sustainable lunar village near the de Gerlache crater, on the lunar South Pole, comprising tourists and astronauts alike. the village will be permanently inhabited and will exploit future technologies to achieve independence from a majority of Earth resupply missions. Execution of the initial construction phase of the DIANA infrastructure depends primarily on the persistent supply of in-situ construction material, regolith. Lunar raw materials also primarily contribute to the life support systems (LSS) and the radiation protection for the inhabited modules. To enable ISRU, resources need to be transported using diverse locomotion systems on the unexplored lunar terrain. A self-sustainable lunar base requires to be built on an ecosystem that facilitates continuous transportation of materials, humans (astronauts and tourists) and robotic systems. this paper focuses on a detailed comprehension of the design, feasibility, and economic requirements of a transportation ecosystem concept explicitly dedicated to the establishment and development of the DIANA lunar village. the mission objectives and top level requirements pertaining to the individual transportation systems will be derived from the detected necessities that are defined for alternative transportation technologies that efficiently provide large amounts of lunar raw material for the construction of lunar infrastructure as well as water ice from the de Gerlache Crater, which shall primarily contribute to the LSS and the production of rocket fuel. While transporting humans, factors such as time, comfort, and risk mitigation play a major role, and are therefore, discussed thoroughly within the framework of this study. Using this study as the principal foundation, a phase 0/A design study illustrating a novel transportation infrastructure concept based on magnetic levitation technology would be developed

In Architectural Engineering, thin shells represent two-dimensional structures in which the third dimension, the thickness, is significantly smaller than the others, which are thus prevailing. the thin-shell construction technique has its roots in Spanish bovedas tabicadas (dating back to at least the 12th century), the construction of which has continued to the present day. the Spanish technique, in the different countries of the Mediterranean area where it was exported (Portugal, France, Italy) has remained almost unchanged over time. However, the introduction of new building materials such as cement and steel at the end of the 19th century inevitably led to the experimentation of thin-shell structures characterised by greater slenderness and more complex shapes. Starting with Rafael Guastavino Moreno -who began to make improvements to the traditional technique-, and moving on to Eladio Dieste -who succeeded in fusing the qualities of bricks with those of reinforced concrete-, and Heinz Isler and Felix Candela -who, working in two different contexts, managed to improve the use of reinforced concrete-, we arrive to current constructions and experiments, in which the economy and ecological compatibility of the process are essential factors to be taken into account in the construction of thin shells. After a general overview on thin shells, the aim of the paper is to provide an analysis of some of the ribbing and formwork technologies used over time to build them. Similarities and differences among the various types of shells will be highlighted, having been used shape, size, and materials as variables for the analyses. A brief description of the current experiments carried out to determine alternative formwork systems to those usually used also is described at the end of the paper.

analysis on the fluctuation correlation between the international oil price and main grain price are carried on via a type of new network analysis method based on sliding window technique, which can map the fragments of WTI international crude oil futures and the three main crop price series into nodes by using the classical visibility graph construction strategy. Four price fluctuation mode transfer networks are constructed and analyzed on details. Main network haracteristics, as well as 16 higher-order knots existed in the associated modal networks, are discussed, too. Our result shows that, the fluctuation modal transfer networks of the WTI international crude oil futures price, the wheat, the corn, and the soybean price all have similar local structures, which means the WTI international futures price has the same time series evolution characteristics with wheat, corn and soybean price series. It indicates that, there exists a potential linkage between the fluctuation of international oil price and the change of domestic grain price in China. We also founded that, the change of corn price is most closely related to the fluctuation of international oil price. this results is helpful for strategies designing under the viewpoint of stable national grain security. Also, the proposed associated modal transfer network constructing method and the high order knots analysis method used here can be easily extended to similar process for other situations.

Lunar infrastructure construction involves leveling of the lunar surface and collecting lunar regolith as a building material. RASSOR 2.0 developed by NASA is one of the typical robotic vehicles as a lunar excavator. It features cylindrical rotating bucket drums for collecting regolith, positioning it as a pivotal tool for future lunar in-situ resource utilization and infrastructure development. However, the optimization of the bucket drum's shape and its motion remain as open issue. therefore, this study aims to find an optimal design of the bucket drum through numerical simulation using the discrete element method (DEM). We introduce five key design parameters of the bucket drum: two of them are related to the bucket shape (scoop throat length, scoop inlet number) and the rest of them are to motion (bucket vertical force, horizontal velocity, and angular velocity). these five parameters were examined in accordance with two performance indices: the sand fill ratio in the drum and the power consumption of the excavation. Solving the multi-objective problem of increasing the fill ratio and reducing power consumption, we found an optimal bucket drum shape and motion. Subsequently, a bucket drum reflecting the optimal shape was fabricated, and the optimal motion was tested. the test results qualitatively matched with the results derived from the DEM analysis. this outcome highlights the validity of the relationship between the design parameters and two performance indices. © 2024 international Society for Terrain-Vehicle systems. Loop acceleration can be used to prove safety, reachability, runtime bounds, and (non-)termination of programs. To this end, a variety of acceleration techniques have been proposed. However, so far all of them have been monolithic, i.e., a single loop could not be accelerated using a combination of several different acceleration techniques. In contrast, we present a calculus that allows for combining acceleration techniques in a modular way and we show how to integrate many existing acceleration techniques into our calculus. Moreover, we propose two novel acceleration techniques that can be incorporated into our calculus seamlessly. Some of these acceleration techniques apply only to non-terminating loops. thus, combining them with our novel calculus results in a new, modular approach for proving non-termination. An empirical evaluation demonstrates the applicability of our approach, both for loop acceleration and for proving non-termination.

this paper analyses factual and legal aspects on the quantum of criminal sanctions in cases of drug micro-trafficking. this case study considers the Italian jurisdiction, which contemplates two legal qualifications of drug dealing, i.e., "minor" and "non-minor" offences. As a case-by-case analysis is required to courts of merits in deciding how the offence has to be legally qualified, the study aims to identify trends and to cast light and provide explanations on the judicial decision-making about the legal qualification of a set of facts. the study emphasizes the importance of combining criminal judgment with innovative tools to facilitate the work of judges and allow information-based studies about jurisprudential trends.
