this position paper describes how blockchains facilitate the implementation of distributed self-adaptive systems. We demonstrate how the master/slave decentralised control pattern for self-adaptive systems, integrated with a permissioned blockchain, can protect nodes of a network against attacks by continuously adapting the membership of an access control list. Whenever malicious behaviour is detected, consensus on an updated access control list is reached, and that node is removed from the network. Using a smart home, as an example, we demonstrate that a permissioned blockchain is able to maintain a consistent view of a network of Internet of things (IoT) devices in the presence of malicious nodes.

While we have long had principles describing how access control enforcement should be implemented, such as the reference monitor concept, imprecision in access control mechanisms and access control policies leads to risks that may enable exploitation. In practice, least privilege access control policies often allow information flows that may enable exploits. In addition, the implementation of access control mechanisms often tries to balance security with ease of use implicitly (e.g., with respect to determining where to place authorization hooks) and approaches to tighten access control, such as accounting for program context, are ad hoc. In this paper, we define four types of risks in access control enforcement and explore possible approaches and challenges in tracking those types of risks. In principle, we advocate runtime tracking to produce risk estimates for each of these types of risk. To better understand the potential of risk estimation for authorization, we propose risk estimate functions for each of the four types of risk, finding that benign program deployments accumulate risks in each of the four areas for ten Android programs examined. As a result, we find that tracking of relative risk may be useful for guiding changes to security choices, such as authorized unsafe operations or placement of authorization checks, when risk differs from that expected.

the Remote access Trojan (RAT), whose exposure often lags far behind its widespread infection, plays a part in the growing number of cyber-attacks. In terms of intrusion detection, signature-based methods still occupy the dominant position together with anomaly-based methods that are deployed to be complementary. the anomaly-based methods are efficient and resource saving;however, anomaly-based RAT detection mainly utilizes machine learning on collective features without considering packet sequences. In addition, imbalanced data has a negative impact on machine learning classification. Accordingly, we analyzed packet sequences from various applications and found a general correlation between the packet direction sequences and the external control behaviors of RATs. this research presents a novel framework for tracking external control at the borders of area networks. We extract packet payload-size sequences, inter-arrival time sequences and packet direction sequences of IP flows. then, RAT network behavior is exposed in the packet direction sequences of flow slices, which are generated by the inter-arrival time sequences. Naive Bayes is utilized for classification, and a frequent sequence mining algorithm is implemented to eliminate noise. After deploying the device, we detected all the RAT sample sessions. Our method achieves a false positive rate of less than 0.6% on real-world campus network data, which demonstrates its efficacy.

In recent years, Smart Grid (SG) is envisioned to be the next generation electric power system by replacing traditional power grid due to its advantage of using two way communications. To implement reliable SG wireless communication networks, IEEE introduced a new wireless standard (IEEE802.15.4g) for Smart Utility Networks (SUNs). However, SUN operates on 2.4 GHz unlicensed band which is overlapped with Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) that leads to coexistence in Smart Utility Networks. In this paper, the coexistence problem of SUN is addressed in terms of homogeneous and heterogeneous interferences. To mitigate the homogeneous interference, Contention access Period (CAP) and Contention Free Period (CFP) of a super frame of IEEE 802.15.4g is used to access the channel using slotted CSMA/CA algorithm by modifying the Backoff Period (BP) and Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) period for different priority data. An analytical model is developed using Markov chain, through which we demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed model in terms of throughput, channel access delay, probability of successful transmission and collision for nodes with different priority data. Performance evaluation is further investigated by comparing the proposed scheme with the existing PA-MAC. A channel switching mechanism is explored to mitigate the heterogeneous interference by the prediction of Naive Bayes Classifier. Predicted result shows that proposed mechanism effectively mitigates the heterogeneous interference by choosing the non-overlapping and non-coexisting channel. © 2017 Association for Computing Machinery.

Existing network policy abstractions handle basic group based reachability and access control list based security policies. However, QoS policies as well as dynamic policies are also important and not representing them in the high level policy abstraction poses serious limitations. At the same time, efficiently configuring and composing group based QoS and dynamic policies present significant technical challenges, such as (a) maintaining group granularity during configuration, (b) dealing with network-bandwidth contention among policies from distinct writers and (c) dealing with multiple path changes corresponding to dynamically changing policies, group membership and end-point mobility. In this paper we propose Janus, a system which makes two major contributions. First, we extend the prior policy graph abstraction model to represent complex QoS and dynamic stateful/temporal policies. Second, we convert the policy configuration problem into an optimization problem with the goal of maximizing the number of satisfied and configured policies, and minimizing the number of path changes under dynamic environments. To solve this, Janus presents several novel heuristic algorithms. We evaluate our system using a diverse set of bandwidth policies and network topologies. Our experiments demonstrate that Janus can achieve near-optimal solutions in a reasonable amount of time.

NVIDIA GPUDirect is a family of technologies aimed at optimizing data movement among GPUs (P2P) or between GPUs and third-party devices (RDMA). GPUDirect Async, introduced in CUDA 8.0, is a new addition which allows direct synchronization between GPU and third party devices. For example, Async allows an NVIDIA GPU to directly trigger and poll for completion of communication operations queued to an InfiniBand Connect-IB network adapter, removing CPU involvement from the critical path in GPU accelerated applications. In this paper, we present the building blocks of GPUDirect Async and explain the supported usage models of this new technology. We also present a performance evaluation using a micro-benchmark and a synthetic stencil benchmark. Finally, we demonstrate the use of Async in a few multi-GPU MPI applications: HPGMG-FV (geometric multi-grid), achieving up to 25% improvement in total execution time;CoMD-CUDA (classical molecular dynamics), reducing communications times up to 30%;LULESH2-CUDA, achieving an average performance improvement of 13% in the total execution time.

In case of collaborative modeling, complex systems are developed by different stakeholders, in offline submissions or online sessions. To guarantee security, access control policies need to be enforced during the collaboration. As levels of required confidentiality and integrity may vary across model parts, we have previously proposed fine-grained rule-based access control, and shown how to consistently interpret flexible access control policies. Now we present an improvement on the previous results allowing for incremental recomputation, which is vital for online collaboration scenarios. Our approach is illustrated using a case study of the MONDO EU project.

the promises of SDN and NFV technologies to boost innovation and to reduce the time-to-market of new services is changing the way in which residential networks will be deployed, managed and maintained in the near future. New user-centric management models for residential networks combining SDN-based residential gateways and cloud technologies have already been proposed, providing flexibility and ease of deployment. Extending the scope of SDN technologies to optical access networks and bringing cloud technologies to the edge of the network enable the creation of advanced residential networks in which complex service function chains can be established to provide traffic differentiation. In this context, this paper defines a novel network management model based on a user-centric approach that allows residential users to define and control access network resources and the dynamic provision of traffic differentiation to fulfill QoS requirements. © 2017 IEEE.
