this paper presents a framework for distributed reactive characters on a computer network and proposes innovative concepts for shared state management. Firstly, behavioral accuracy is defined in terms of three types of state (physical, procedural and emotional). Secondly, visual soundness - a concept inversely proportional to behavioral accuracy - is associated with the autonomy of clones. thirdly, the usual concept of dead reckoning is relaxed by exploring the idea of autonomy, which is the basis for networked reactive characters. the framework, built on top of an open-architecture toolkit called Bamboo, can gracefully cope with reactive environments producing good levels of visual soundness, which results in smooth animations, and behavioral accuracy. © 2000 IEEE.

In this paper we present a new approach which integrates the T-Snakes model and a multi-resolution method in a unified framework for segmentation and boundary extraction. In a first stage, a local scale property of the objects is used to define a triangulation of the image domain and a sampling (coarsest resolution) of the image field. the low resolution image is threshold to get a 0-1 field which is processed by a simple continuation method to generate polygonal curves whose interior contain the desired objects. If the polygonal curve envoi ves more than one object, then the resolution is increased in that region and the method will be applied again. this stage gives a rough approximation of the desired boundaries which will be improved by the T-Snakes to get the final result. We demonstrate the method for 2D medical imaging in the experimental results and indicate how it can be extended to 3D in the future works. © 2000 IEEE.

this paper presents a system that is being developed for the recognition of the handwritten legal amount in brazilian bank checks. Our strategy used to approach the handwritten legal amount recognition problem puts on evidence the key-words: "mil", "reais/real", "centavos/centavo" which are almost always present in each amount. the recognizer, based on Hidden Markov Models, does a global word analysis, therefore, it doesn't carry out an explicit segmentation of words into characters or pseudo-characters. In this context, each word image is transformed into a sequence of observations using pre-processing and feature extraction stages. Our system, when tested on our database simulating brazilian bank checks, shows the viability of our approach. © 2000 IEEE.

this paper presents a technique for the segmentation of moving objects in color image sequences. the technique is based on Beucher-Meyer paradigm, with markers detected by a morphological operator designed by computational learning (or, equivalently, statistical optimization.) Objects in some frames of the video are marked manually and used to train the markers detector. then, the operator designed is used to mark the objects in the other frames and the paradigm is applied to all frames marked by the detector. Two real world examples illustrate the application of the proposed technique. © 2000 IEEE.

Stochastic texture images representing various foil materials (like polymer sheets, nonwoven textiles and paper) provide important information about these materials, and are very utilized in industry. Often, it is difficult to objectively measure the similarity among those images, or to discriminate images of different types of materials. this work proposes a new multi-resolution method for texture image discrimination and similarity matching. the wavelet transform is used to represent the images in multiple resolutions, and to describe them in terms of their orientation and graylevel distributions. It is also proposed a multi-resolution similarity measure based on this representation. Finally, some experiments illustrate the performance of our method, and some conclusions are presented. © 2000 IEEE.

this work presents a new method for image compression, using Tritree decomposition (TT). TT have been originally proposed by Wille for generation of non-structured finite elements meshs, for numerical solution of differential equation systems [1]. TT decomposition is similar to the Quadtree decomposition (QT), which has been broadly used by image processing algorithms, mainly for segmentation and compression. However, while QT subdivides the image into progressively smaller quadratic regions, TT decomposition subdivides the image in triangular regions. the goal is to segment the image into a set of triangular homogeneous regions, where the differences among the pixel values don't exceed a certain threshold. A tree is built to represent the decomposition. Each triangle will be a node of the tree TT. the initial triangle, that contains the whole image, is the root of the tree. the final triangles, representing the compressed image, are the leaves of the tree. Reconstruction of the image is accomplished by planar interpolation among the vertices of each triangle leaf. © 2000 IEEE.

this work aims the recognition of characters in plates of private brazilian vehicles using neural networks. Initially we define a standard for the image as prerequisite for the pre-processing. Afterward, the reduction of the dimensionality is made in order to make possible the use of the network. For this we establish a figure of merit-Q-characterizing, amongst some algorithms of characters splitting, the best one. Q is based on normalized cross correlation of the desired character image and the gotten one. the pre-processing allowed us the improvement of the image, reducing the background noise and increasing the contrast by applying a non-linear function. In the last stage, the neural network recognizes each character of the plate. Preliminary results are shown. © 2000 IEEE.
