Machine-generated image descriptions are now widely used by the visually impaired as well as the sighted. Currently, most image description apps aim to generate text that accurately describes the objects visible in an image, drawing on statistical techniques from computer vision and HCI research to categorize these seen objects. they do not contextualize descriptions by the types of images (e.g., personal vs. public, screenshots vs. portraits) or the intentions for photo use (e.g., retrieving information, reminiscing, artistic expression). We present a critique that builds on three vignettes analyzing the authors' - one of them visually impaired and the other sighted - reflections on descriptions of their personal photos generated by two apps that were not always relevant to their intended photographic experience. Our analysis points to possibilities and challenges for expanding the image-text relations assumed in computer vision and HCI research to generate descriptions that are not only accurate in terms of what can be seen, but also contextually relevant, with or without vision.
