Many distributed real-time applications have dynamic requirements regarding communication delay and bandwidth. the Data Distribution Service (Dds) middleware is a key enabling technology used to support such applications. Indeed, the publish/subscribe distribution model of Dds with the ability to assign dynamic QoS (Quality of Service) parameters to Dds distribution services is able to take into account changes in the exchanged data flows and in the required QoS. this variability is taken into account at the middleware level to adjust some of Dds QoS mechanisms but is rarely propagated to the network layer to provide dynamic network communication services that fit the varying Dds distribution service needs. Usually, an over provisioned network is used, leading to network resource wastage. this paper addresses this issue and proposes a communication architecture that combines Dds with a new emerging class of communication networks named Software Defined Networks (SDN) to support efficiently dynamic distributed applications. SDN bring flexibility to the network and enable the provision of on-demand dynamic network communication services.

Investigating the performance of parallel applications at scale on future high-performance computing (HPC) architectures and the performance impact of different architecture choices is an important component of HPC hardware/software co-design. the Extreme-scale Simulator (xSim) is a simulation-based toolkit for investigating the performance of parallel applications at scale. xSim scales to millions of simulated Message Passing Interface (MPI) processes. the overhead introduced by a simulation tool is an important performance and productivity aspect. this paper documents two improvements to xSim: (1) a new deadlock resolution protocol to reduce the parallel discrete event simulation management overhead and (2) a new simulated MPI message matching algorithm to reduce the oversubscription management overhead. the results clearly show a significant performance improvement, such as by reducing the simulation overhead for running the NAS Parallel Benchmark suite inside the simulator from 1,020% to 238% for the conjugate gradient (CG) benchmark and from 102% to 0% for the embarrassingly parallel (EP) and benchmark, as well as, from 37,511% to 13,808% for CG and from 3,332% to 204% for EP with accurate process failure simulation.

Building complex simulations is usually a challenge, mainly due to the broad spectrum of concepts that must be taken into account. simulation middleware based on the ieee 1516 standard tries to reduce this complexity, but there are still aspects that hinder the implementation of such simulations. the dependency between the source code and the corresponding formal description of the model could be hard to verify and maintain. Also, the code for the model simulation and the code needed for the integration with the HLA/rtI middleware coexist becoming complex and error prone. In this paper we propose a new framework based on metadata (Java annotations or C# attributes) that faces these problems and extends the ieee 1516-2010 standard. In addition, we present an implementation of the ieee 1516 standard in the C# language. Finally, we explain our experience in implementing the standard in C#.

Most of the existing packet-level simulation tools are designed to perform experiments modeling a small to medium scale networks. the main reason of this limitation is the amount of available computation power and memory in quasi mono-process simulation environment. To enable efficient packet-level simulation for large scale scenario, we introduce a new CPU-GPU co-simulation framework where synchronization and experiment design are performed on CPU and node's processes are executed in parallel on GPU according to the master/worker model [13]. the framework is developed using Compute-Unified Device Architecture ( CUDA) and denoted as Cunetsim [18], CUDA network simulator. To study the performance gain when GPU is used, we also introduce the CPU-legacy version of Cunetsim optimized for multi-core architecture. In this work, we present Cunetsim architecture, design concept, and features. We evaluate the performance of Cunetsim (both versions) compared to Sinalgo and NS-3 using benchmark scenarios [20]. Evaluation results show that Cunetsim execution time remains stable and that it achieves significantly lower computation time than CPU-based simulators for both static and mobile networks with no degradation in the accuracy of the results. We also study the impact of the hardware configuration on the performance gain and the simulation correctness. Cunetsim presents a proof of concept, demonstrating the feasibility of a fully GPU-based simulation rather than GPU-offloading or partial acceleration, through adequate architecture.

the development of Coalition Battle Management Language (C-BML) has provided a new set of tools to enable C2-simulation interoperability to be achieved using common, international standards rather than the customised and sometimes ad hoc methods used previously. Furthermore, it permits complex, multi-national coalition federations to be designed and executed. NATO MSG-048 was established in 2006 to evaluate C-BML as a practical means of achieving C2-simulation interoperability and as part of its chartered activities conducted a number of C-BML experiments culminating in an ambitious experiment in November 2009. MSG-085 has been established to build on the earlier work of MSG-048 and its programme of work includes focussed experimentation and evaluation of different C-BML systems. this paper addresses issues in early implementation of C-BML for the next generation of C-BML, including multiple simulations, translators, the Military Scenario Definition Language, and C-BML middleware. this paper is intended to complement companion papers on servers and grammar in a session on distributed military simulation in coalitions. © 2011 ieee.

the increase of computational power in embedded systems has allowed integrating together hard real-time tasks and rich applications. Complex SW infrastructures containing both rtOS and GPOS are required to handle this complexity. To optimally map system functionality to the hard-rt SW domain, to the general purpose SW domain or to HW peripherals, early performance evaluations at the first steps of the design process are required. Approximate timed co-simulation has been proposed as a fast solution for system modeling at early design steps. this co-simulation technique allows simulating systems at speed close to functional execution, while considering timing effects. As a consequence, system performance estimations can be obtained early, allowing efficient design space exploration and system refinement. To achieve fast simulation speed, the SW code is pre-annotated with time information. the annotated code is then natively executed, performing what is called native-based co-simulation. Previous native-based simulation environments are not prepared to model multi-OS systems, so the performance evaluation of the different SW domains is not possible. this paper proposes a new embedded system modeling solution considering dual rtOS/GPOS systems. A real Linux-based infrastructure has been modeled an integrated into a state-of-the-art co-simulation environment. the resulting solution is capable of modeling and evaluating all HW and SW system components providing the designer with valuable information for early system optimization and design space exploration.
