Traditionally shared data areas have been used to efficiently communicate between embedded system tasks, such as periodically executing control system tasks. Such implementations are highly sensitive to the execution order of tasks, i.e., they depend on a static timeline. SAE AADL supports a port communication model that ensures deterministic processing of signal streams. In this paper we discuss an analytical framework that allows us to optimize such port-based communication by generating a runtime executive that utilizes shared data areas where appropriate, while ensuring the timing semantic assumed by the control application.

the paper presents a generative development methodology and component models of COMDES-II, a component-based software framework for distributed embedded control systems with real-time constraints. the adopted methodology allows for rapid modeling and validation of control software at a higher level of abstraction, from which a system implementation in C can be automatically synthesized. To achieve this objective, COMDES-II defines formally various kinds of components to address the critical requirements of the targeted domain, taking into consideration both the architectural and behavioral aspects of the system. Accordingly, a system can be hierarchically composed from reusable components with heterogeneous models of computation, whereas behavioral aspects of interest are specified independently, following the principle of separation-of concerns. the paper introduces the established generative methodology for COMDES-II from a general perspective, describes the component models in details and demonstrates their application through a DC-Motor control system case study.

the paper presents a time-triggered distributed object computing environment for embedded control systems such as automotive control systems. the time-triggered architecture is suitable for hard real-time systems. We present a time-triggered distributed object model as an extension to the time-triggered object model that consists of objects periodically updating their own attribute values. the model is suitable for embedded control systems in which the control logics are designed with control block diagrams. Replica objects are used for efficient location transparency in the model and inter-object communications are local method calls, not remote method invocations. We have developed a distributed computing environment based on the time- triggered distributed object model. the middleware maintains the replicas to be consistent with the original objects using periodic state messages. the middleware executes the replication processing with the stubs that bridge the original objects, the middleware, and the replicas. We have also developed a development environment for embedded control application programs based on the time-triggered distributed object model. the stubs are generated from the interface definitions written in CORBA-compliant IDL.

In reality, peripheral devices often make a significant contribution to the power consumption of the entire system. An effective energy-efficient scheduling algorithm should consider not only the energy consumption of the processor but also the usages of devices. In this paper, we explore energy-efficient scheduling of periodic real-time tasks in a system with a dynamic-voltage-scaling (DVS) processor and multiple non-DVS system devices. We consider systems that any device used by a task remains operating while the task is active. We propose scheduling algorithms in the management of task preemption to reduce the energy consumption of devices. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms could not only reduce the number of task preemption significantly but also minimize the energy consumption, compared to earliest-deadline-first scheduling.

Reducing energy consumption is important for mobile embedded systems and one of its solutions is dynamic voltage scaling (DVS). In this paper, we examine how to achieve further energy saving for periodic real-time tasks with non-preemptible sections on EDF algorithm by using DVS. Previous algorithms use two speed levels to deal with run-time blocking situation. However, this paper proposes a multi-speed algorithm that exploits various speed levels depending on specific blocking situation to minimize energy consumption. Moreover, it also presents an enhanced multi-speed algorithm that further reduces the energy dissipation by dropping the speed level early and considering only remaining blocking time to compute a lower speed. We induced feasibility conditions for our algorithms and proved them. the experiments show that proposed algorithms achieve up to 70.8% energy saving compared to previous algorithms.

there are numbers of publications addressing control systems for home/Office appliance involving infrared remote controls but there is no such publication/protocol/standard addressing solution for mobile-to-home/office appliance controlling through general packet radio services (GPRS) networks without involving any internet based servers. this paper addresses recent research and development efforts in constructing wireless real-time control system based on server/client architecture through GPRS networks. this paper includes an implementation example designed to control home/Office appliance from anywhere & anytime even when user is not at home/Office. the paper demonstrates a micro java application as example of Real-time control system for Home/Office appliances and addresses the development-time and implementation-time experiences.

In the ubiquitous computing environment, it is expected that an intellectual vehicle with a capability of intelligence and communication has access to network and get useful information providing service. this requires a new network architecture and in-vehicle sensor network technology to support mobility of vehicle service. the mobility of vehicle service is to give users the vehicle services at any time and any where. In this paper, CDMA-based network architecture is designed for intelligent vehicle services of remote vehicle diagnosis and management. the intelligent vehicle is equipped with a vehicle gateway and in-vehicle sensor network. the performance of the proposed network structure in terms of the round trip time taken to get a vehicle service is evaluated. the experimental results show that the round trip time is appeared to be different when a vehicle is driven or not and where it is driven. It is 776ms when a vehicle is stopped, 707ms when a vehicle is driven in the rural area, and 910ms in the urban area

In this paper, we present our original approach to the model-based statistical usage testing of a class of communication protocol implementations that are based on the state design pattern and Java programming environment augmented with the class FSMsystem. the approach is based on the working environment that has been proven on a number of real-world projects. the working environment is created with the following set of tools: generic modeling environment with the operational profile model paradigm registered to it, operational profile model interpreter, generic test case generator, test case compiler, and the unit testing framework JUnit extended with the class TestBed that acts as both test driver and stub thus providing the complete test harness. In the paper, we present the methodology of the model-based statistical usage testing of a class of communication protocol implementations, the tools that support this methodology, and the case study - the model based statistical usage testing of SIP INVITE client transaction, a part of the SIP protocol stack

the coordination of power control and soft handover is an important mechanism for interference-reduction to increase the system capacity. the performance of SIR-based closed-loop power control (CLPC) for the WCDMA UTRA-FDD uplink has been evaluated, dealing with the special requirements set by using these algorithms when the mobile station is connected to more than one base station during soft handover. the simulation has been developed using a simulation tool written in MATLAB. Two power control algorithms, PCA1 and PCA2, specified by the 3/sup rd/ generation partnership project (3GPP) have been simulated and compared in a vehicular environment. the performance metrics in comparing these two power control algorithms are the power control error (PCE), which is the difference between the received E/sub b//N/sub O/ and the E/sub b//N/sub O/ target, and the average MS transmitted power. Simulation results indicate that PCA1 outperforms PCA2 for the range of speeds considered. Higher average mobile transmitted power and SIR are required in PCA1 to support higher data rate users.
