Flash memory becomes ideal storage media for high computing mobile computers, embedded systems and real time applications because of its attractive features like fast access speed, shock resistance, high reliability and further more it's rapidly increasing capacity. However, issues on performance and data integrity are becoming more critical to address by researchers. First, the rapidly increasing capacity of flash memory imposes long initialization time delay for normal start-up and in case of crash recovery. Second, large main memory requirement for keeping file system mapping data structures becoming significant issue with growth in size of flash memory. In this paper, we propose an advanced mechanism for high performance and system reliability by effective metadata management, efficient mounting, fast crash recovery, and reduced RAM footprints using virtual clustering on memory blocks. Modern benchmark based simulation results show the significantly improved performance by our proposed scheme.

In recent years, improvements of energy efficiency and computational performance have become a major issue, because smartphones and tablets become popular. To implement high performance, multi-core accelerator consists of general purpose processors and accelerators are often used. But to use these multi-core accelerator efficiently, programmers have to consider synchronization and data transfer between accelerators, memory and I/O. therefore frameworks such as OpenCL have been proposed for effective use of parallel computing resources of multi-core processors. OpenCL frameworks for GPGPU, Intel multi-core and many other kind of multi-core processors have been developed on Linux. However, in order to use those multi-core accelerators effectively, it is necessary to control accelerators with software environment aiming effective use of accelerators. Generally user mode application program calls OS to synchronize of accelerator's data transfer and termination of the its execution with overhead. In this paper, accelerators are controlled from collaborated OS and OpenCL library, instead of user mode application program. Our feature of these methods is that OS cooperates with library to reduce overhead of control accelerators. the proposed framework in this paper integrates the execution and data transfer control in an OpenCL library and an embedded OS. the OpenCL library creates task automaticity generated from the description of the user program. the OpenCL library gives scheduling information such as execution order about tasks to the scheduler of the embedded OS. the embedded OS's scheduler handles events of execution, termination and synchronization of data transfer via interrupts from accelerators. the scheduler determines to execute next task from the scheduling information passed by the OpenCL library. Efficient application scheduling is critical for achieving high performance in heterogeneous computing (HC) environments. Because of its importance, there are many researches on this problem and various algorithms have been proposed. Duplication-based algorithm is a kind of famous algorithm to solve scheduling problem, which achieve high performance on minimizing the overall completion time(makespan) of applications. However, they do not consider energy consumption. With the growing advocacy for green computing system, energy conservation has been an important issue and gained a particular interest. An existing technique to reduce energy consumption of application is dynamic voltage/frequcny scaling(DVFS), but its efficiency is affected by the overhead of time and energy caused by voltage scaling. In this paper, we propose a new energy-aware scheduling algorithm called Energy Aware Scheduling by Minimizing Duplication(EAMD), which considers the energy consumption as well as the makespan of applications. It adopts a subtle energy-aware method to determine and delete the abundant task copies in the schedules generated by duplication-based algorithms, which is easier to operate than DVFS and produces no extra time and energy consumption. this algorithm can reduce large amount of energy consumption while having the same makespan compared with duplication-based algorithms without energy awareness. Randomly generated DAGs are tested in our experiments. Experimental results show that EAMD can save up to 15.59% energy consumption for the existed duplication-based algorithms. Several factors affecting the performance are analyzed in the paper, too.

this paper proposes an extensible RTOS (real-time operating system) architecture for embedded heterogeneous muti-core processors, which consist of processors with different processing power and functionalities. the architecture splits the RTOS kernel into the two components, the proxy kernel (PK) and user-level kernel (UK). the PK runs on a less powerful core, and delegate its functions to the UK that runs on a powerful core as a user process. the UK takes responsibility for the dynamic resource management functions, thus, the PK can focus on the basic but important RTOS functionalities, such as timing management, synchronization, and dispatching the highest priority process. the experiment results running micro benchmark programs show that the proposed architecture can achieve the faster creation and invocation of processes and that a communication cost between the PK and the UK is negligible. © 2012 ieee.

Scheduling theory and algorithms have been well studied in the real-time systems literature. Many useful approaches and solutions have appeared in different problem domains. While their theoretical effectiveness has been extensively discussed, the community is now facing implementation challenges that show the impact of the algorithms in practice. In this paper, we propose a scheduler framework, called ExSched, which enables different schedulers to be developed for different operating system (OS) platforms without any modifications to the OS itself, using a unified interface. the framework will easily keep up with changes in the kernel since it is only dependent on a few kernel primitives. the usefulness of this framework is that scheduling policies can be implemented as external plug-ins. they can simply use the ExSched interface instead of platform-dependent functions, since platform details are abstracted by ExSched. the advantage for industry is that they would more easily keep up with new kernel versions since ExSched does not require patches. the advantage for academia is that we could focus on the development of schedulers instead of tedious and time-consuming installations of patched kernels. Our prototype implementation of ExSched supports Linux and Vx Works and it comes with example schedulers which include hierarchical and multi-core schedulers in addition to traditional fixed-priority scheduling (FPS) and earliest deadline first (EDF) algorithms. © 2012 ieee.

Prognostic health management (PHM) is a method for assuring the reliability of a system by monitoring the system in real time as it is used in the field. As the system wears out, but before failure, information that facilitates decision making about the future use of the system is delivered to the user. In this paper, a cost justification has been developed for incorporating the additional circuitry needed to enable prognostics for electrical components directly onto a functional circuit board. Implementing PHM capability for circuit boards will add additional cost to a system, so high reliability systems where the cost of failure is high are easiest to cost justify for prognostics. Aerospace, defense and automotive, applications qualify as high reliability systems. Application domains that require high uptime, minimal amounts of unplanned maintenance, and controllable operating costs can also be cost justified for prognostics since they can benefit from the pro-active management of failures facilitated by PHM. Intangible criteria such as safety or the cost of human life also motivated the need for PHM, so often times projects are labeled strategic, and not subjected to the discipline of a fmancial analysis. this paper will show rigorous methods for assessing the decision to invest in PHM for electronics. the uncertain nature of research and development (R&D) and difficult to predict future economic conditions is not well captured by traditional discounted cash flow (DCF) methods. An approach known as the Datar-Mathews (DM) method will extend the DCF methods to be equivalent to a real options analysis and the Black-Scholes formula. the DM method is intuitive and uses concepts familiar to most engineers and technical managers.

the synthesis of a valid and optimized deployment model from functional and platform models is a crucial issue in the development of distributed real-time systems. the synthesis consists in the allocation of functions/signals to execution nodes/communication buses, the mapping of functions/signals into tasks/messages and the priority assignment to tasks/messages. Current approaches provide partial solutions for the synthesis of a deployment model on distributed platforms, as either the allocation or the mapping is fixed a-priori. In order to tackle this problem we propose an optimization technique, based on two different mathematical programming formulations, to handle optimization of both allocation and mapping. the optimization is multi-objective and considers extensibility maximization, latency minimization and minimization of the number of tasks. the obtained solutions satisfy timing and platform resources requirements. An automotive case study shows the effectiveness of our approach. © 2012 ieee.

Power-aware computing has become popular recently and many techniques have been proposed to manage processor energy consumption for traditional real-time applications. To reduce the power consumption' the power management should consider the effect of checking pending periodic tasks. the contribution of this paper is twofold. First' the paper proposes an efficient scheduling method to manage the periodic tasks. then' this management has been implemented and validated in a real-time operating system (RTOS). the experimental results show that an optimistic result can be achieved with this method. © 2012 ieee.
