the recent data deluge needing to be processed represents one of the major challenges in computational field. Available high-performance computing (HPC) systems can be very useful for solving this problem when data can be divided in chunks that can be processed in parallel. However, due to intrinsic characteristics of data-intensive problems, these applications can present huge load imbalances, and it can be difficult to efficiently use the available resources. this work proposes a strategy for dynamically analyzing and tuning the partition factor used to generate the data chunks. With the aim of decreasing the load imbalance and therefore the overall execution time, this strategy divides the data chunks with the biggest computation times and gathers contiguous chunks with the smallest computation times. the criteria to divide or join chunks are based on the chunks' associated execution time (average and standard deviation) and the number of processing nodes being used. We have evaluated our strategy by using simulation, and a real data-intensive application. Applying our strategy, we have obtained promising results since we have improved up to 55% the total execution time.

Collaborative Augmented reality (CAR) systems allow multiple users to share a real world environment including computer-generated images in real time. Currently, the hardware features of most mobile phones provide excellent multimedia services, and it also includes wireless network capabilities that offer a natural platform for CAR systems. However, the performance of the mobile CAR applications under different conditions, like the number and type of devices in the system, has not been studied yet. this paper presents the experimental characterization of CAR systems based on mobile phones, providing quantitative results about well-known performance metrics in distributed systems like system throughput and system response times. the characterization results show that the system saturation point depends on the overall percentage of CPU utilization in the computer platform acting as the system server, although it is not a fixed value and it is inversely related to the number of processor cores. Also, the results show that throughput of CAR systems heavily depends on the kind of client devices, but CAR systems can efficiently support some hundreds of clients in any case. Another important result is that the CAR system throughput is limited by the server I/O in some cases. therefore, any improvement in CAR systems should be addressed to alleviate the server I/O, even though it may add computational overhead to the server.

It is well known that the performance of real-time control applications can be affected by many factors, including the choice (and configuration) of the hardware platform and task scheduling algorithm. this paper presents a real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulation tool that simultaneously integrates concepts from control and real-time computing to allow further investigation into these links. It allows the experimental prototyping and analysis of real-time control systems on real hardware - but within a simulated plant environment -and thus allows the potential impacts of hardware and software architecture on control performance and dependability to be evaluated. the structure of the proposed tool is described, along with a preliminary experiment that has been performed to illustrate some of the test facility capabilities.

Shared-memory multithreaded programs running on chip multiprocessors (CMPs) tend to be nondeterministic. Two-phase deterministic record-replay is an effective approach to solve this nondeterminism. this paper proposes an efficient deterministic record-replay named Fly Replay. During recording, Fly Replay logs not only the right dependencies of memory races but also the pseudo dependencies constituted by predecessors of memory races into per-thread log. During replay, Fly Replay produces wakeup messages actively to trigger successors in time, achieving low communication overhead and fast replay speed. At the same time, Fly Replay reduces hardware overhead by using hardware signatures. Simulation shows that Fly Replay reduces the log size for splash2 workloads by 40% on average compared with RTR and Rerun in 4-core systems, and has good scalability in log size. More importantly, Fly Repaly can achieve replay speed within 1%~18% of the native execution speed without record-replay.

Semi-RAID (S-RAID) is an alternative RAID data layout for applications that exhibit sequential data access pattern in order to reduce power consumption of storage systems. However, it is not design for archival storage specially, and that makes it not much efficient for these applications. In this paper, we present an improved data layout of S-RAID: Hybrid S-RAID (HS-RAID) to improve energy-saving and reliability of the S-RAID used in the archival storage specially. HS-RAID takes two strategies to achieve the goal: one is to storage metadata separating from data files to increase the idle time of disks for energy-saving, the other is to utilize a new parity technique to reduce overheads of the storage system. We have developed a HS-RAID 5 system with 12 hard disks and 2 SSDs to evaluate it. Experimental results show that the power consumption of HS-RAID is only 36% of RAID 5, and 70% of S-RAID 5. Furthermore, the analysis shows that HS-RAID makes average mean time to failure (MTTF) 40 times as long as RAID.

Ensuring the security of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is vital for monitoring real-time systems. One of the major security flaws experienced by WSNs is denial of service (DoS) which can even lead to the breakdown of the complete system or to wrong decisions being made by the system that can cause adverse results. this research work focuses on two techniques for detecting a DoS attack at a medium access control (MAC) layer. Our research compares and evaluates the performance of two major machine learning techniques: neural network (NN) and support vector machine (SVM). Vanderbilt Prowler is used for simulating the scenarios. In the simulations, normalized critical parameters and their corresponding probabilities of DoS attack are computed in 50 trial runs. these normalized critical parameters and their corresponding probabilities of DoS attack are used as training inputs in NN and SVM approaches. the simulation results clearly show that SVM provides better accuracy compared to NN, 97% accuracy by SVM and 91% accuracy by NN. the simulation also shows that SVM takes much less time to detect and determine the probability of a DoS attack, 0.25 seconds by SVM and 0.75 seconds by NN. All these results clearly show that SVM performs better than NN when used for detecting the probability of DoS attack in WSNs.

In this paper, we propose and develop a platform to support data collection for mobile crowdsensing from mobile device sensors that is under-pinned by real-time mobile data stream mining. We experimentally show that mobile data mining provides an efficient and scalable approach for data collection for mobile crowdsensing. Our approach results in reducing the amount of data sent, as well as the energy usage on the mobile phone, while providing comparable levels of accuracy to traditional models of intermittent/continuous sensing and sending. We have implemented our Context-Aware real-time Open Mobile Miner (CAROMM) to facilitate data collection from mobile users for crowdsensing applications. CAROMM also collects and correlates this real-time sensory information with social media data from both Twitter and Facebook. CAROMM supports delivering real-time information to mobile users for queries that pertain to specific locations of interest. We have evaluated our framework by collecting real-time data over a period of days from mobile users and experimentally demonstrated that mobile data mining is an effective and efficient strategy for mobile crowdsensing.

Both sensor coverage maximization and energy cost minimization are the fundamental requirements in the design of real-life mobile sensing applications, e.g., (1) deploying environmental sensors (like CO 2 , fine particle measurement) on public transports to monitor air pollution, (2) analyzing smart phone embedded sensors (like GPS, accelerometer) to recognize people daily activities. However sensor coverage and energy cost contradict each other: the higher frequency mobile sensing takes, the more energy is used, and vise versa. In this paper, we design a novel two-step mobile sensing process ("OptiMoS") to achieve optimal mobile sensing that can effectively balance sensor coverage and energy cost. In the first step, OptiMoS divides the continuous mobile sensor readings into several segments, where the readings in one segment are highly-correlated rather than readings amongst different segments. In the second step, OptiMoS identifies optimal sampling for the sensor readings in each segment, where the selected readings can guarantee reasonably high sensor coverage with limited sampling rate. Various greedy & near-optimal segmentation and sampling methods are designed in OptiMoS, and are evaluated using real-life environmental data from mobile sensors.

Efficient application scheduling is critical for achieving high performance in heterogeneous computing (HC) environments. Because of its importance, there are many researches on this problem and various algorithms have been proposed. Duplication-based algorithm is a kind of famous algorithm to solve scheduling problem, which achieve high performance on minimizing the overall completion time(makespan) of applications. However, they do not consider energy consumption. With the growing advocacy for green computing system, energy conservation has been an important issue and gained a particular interest. An existing technique to reduce energy consumption of application is dynamic voltage/frequcny scaling(DVFS), but its efficiency is affected by the overhead of time and energy caused by voltage scaling. In this paper, we propose a new energy-aware scheduling algorithm called Energy Aware Scheduling by Minimizing Duplication(EAMD), which considers the energy consumption as well as the makespan of applications. It adopts a subtle energy-aware method to determine and delete the abundant task copies in the schedules generated by duplication-based algorithms, which is easier to operate than DVFS and produces no extra time and energy consumption. this algorithm can reduce large amount of energy consumption while having the same makespan compared with duplication-based algorithms without energy awareness. Randomly generated DAGs are tested in our experiments. Experimental results show that EAMD can save up to 15.59% energy consumption for the existed duplication-based algorithms. Several factors affecting the performance are analyzed in the paper, too.

this paper presents a light-weight hybrid protocol called Bin-MAC (Binary Medium Access Control) for highly resource-constrained wireless sensor nodes. In addition to simplicity and low footprint, a distinguishing feature of Bin-MAC is its deterministic contention resolution mechanism, which enables it to achieve bounded latency on data transmissions. As a result, Bin-MAC can be applied to delay-sensitive applications with real-time constraints, a feature not provide by most of the existing hybrid protocols. Another feature of the proposed protocol is that it requires carrier-sensing hardware only on the base station side, and sensor nodes do not have to possess such capability. Bin-MAC does not require clock synchronization, and thus clock drifts have no impact on its performance. Experimental results show Bin-MAC to be scalable and able to handle large network sizes without noticeable performance degradation.
