To create a common understanding of a software system, for users and developers, we believe that run-time visualization of both behavior and internal structure is critical. this is particularly true for distributed embeddedsystems, which are designed to be unobtrusive, making them difficult to comprehend for people who are not familiar withthem. We suggest a novel method to visualize software behavior in real-time flexibly and comfortably, facilitating understanding of software. We conducted a feasibility study with a proof-of-concept prototype. Our results indicate that visualizing structure and behavior in real-time supports software comprehension for new architects, developers and users, and can even provide new insights to experienced developers.

On the one hand, it enables computer vision as a cost-effective feedback source;On the other hand, it imposes multiple challenges on the vision processing system. the authors have designed and implemented an FPGA-based embedded vision system in support of high frame rate visual servoing applications. the vision system will be demonstrated together with a mechanical system for vision based inkjet printing. this demonstration shows that, with off-the-shelf components, a robust, hard real-time, low delay embedded vision system is feasible for industrial applications. the research aspect of the experiment has been published in previous papers of the authors. this demonstration paper emphasises on the practical issues for the implementation of such system, and the lessons learned from this practice.

this paper presents a new embedded stereo vision system called BiSeeMos. this system has been designed for fast stereo vision computation up to 160 frames per second at a resolution of 1024 by 1024 pixels. the system's heart is a Cyclone III FPGA from ALTERA Corporation with 119,088 reconfigurable logic elements, 3,888 Kbits of memory and 288 embedded multipliers. Tracking-by-detection is an attractive paradigm for intelligent visual surveillance applications where clutter, lighting variations, target overlap and occlusions hamper conventional background modeling. However, state-of-the-art vehicle and pedestrian detectors based on discriminative classification are too computationally expensive for real-time implementation on embedded smart cameras. this paper presents the Generative Focus of Attention-Discriminative Validation (GFA-DV) detector which uses generative target detection to greatly improve the efficiency of discriminative classification. the proposed method gains further efficiency by using a hierarchical visual codebook to enable each stage of the detector to efficiently utilize the same features within a different quantization of the feature space. this approach reduces the expense of feature matching compared to multiple flat codebooks. the proposed GFA-DV detector is experimentally compared to several state-of-the-art methods, and shown to perform better than other efficient detectors while achieving a 100 times speedup over more accurate detectors.
