MATLAB/Simulink is commonly used for designing model-based dynamic embedded systems. throughout real-time Workshop toolkits, it can generate C or C++ programs for various target platforms, which is useful to develop embedded systems. However, the current toolkits generate only single programs, so that it does not leverage multicore technology for performance improvement. In this paper, we provide a new automatic code generation scheme for multicore real-time systems by inserting user-defined S-Functions for Simulink applications. the proposed scheme uses mailboxes for synchronization among threads in order to reduce the overhead. Users can easily develop multiple subtasks of a Simulink application on multicore systems. We develop the automatic code generation for RTAI real-time systems and evaluate the performance throughout experiments. © 2011 ieee.

A Cyber-Physical System (CPS) is a network of hybrid systems, combinations of physical entities and software systems that control them. A CPS offers a set of diverse services under stringent real-time and physical resource constraints. In contrast with embedded systems, a CPS interacts directly with the physical world. Consequently, services in a CPS must be guaranteed with high dependability assurance. In literature the terms dependability and trustworthiness are used interchangeably to denote a compound property, emerging from safety, security, reliability, and availability features that govern the behavior of system components, their services, and their compositions. In this paper we introduce a service-oriented view of CPS and investigate accountability and dependability within context-awareness capabilities of CPS.

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) are having a widespreED use in enterprise computing applications, being Web services the most common implementation. the use of SOA has also been proposed for embedded systems, although very little could be found in the literature on the use of SOA for Safety-Critical embedded systems. this paper discusses the use of SOA for the development of this class of systems. Safetycritical embedded systems have specific requirements such as high reliability and real time response, making the use of SOA more challenging than for standard applications. Furthermore, this paper proposes a new form of segregating the UAV mission from the vehicle itself. In order to separate the mission of the plane the MOSA - Mission Oriented Sensors Array - is proposed, an array of sensors oriented to missions that is plugged into the aircraft so as to leave it totally independent of the payloED. the techniques proposed in this paper not only aim to facilitate the development of applications but also allow different tasks to be performed simply switching such sensors and their association with the aircraft. © 2011 ieee.

Communication-aware task mapping algorithms, which map parallel tasks onto processing nodes according to the communication patterns of applications, are essential to reduce the communication time in modern high performance computing. In this paper, we design algorithms specifically for interconnected multicore systems, whose architectural property, namely small number of cores per node, large number of nodes, and large performance gap between the communication within a multicore and among multicores, had brought new challenges and opportunities to the mapping problem. Let k be the number of cores per multicore and n be the number of tasks. We consider the practical case that k is much smaller than n, for k = 2, 4, and 6. the designed algorithms are optimal for the mapping measurement, called Maximum Interconnective Message Size (MIMS), and of time complexity merely O(mlogm) for m communication pairs. thus, they are highly scalable for large applications. We had experimented the algorithms on the IBM Blue Gene/P system for two synthetic benchmarks and two applications. the results show good communication performance improvement. © 2011 ieee.

As the complexity of embedded systems, as well as the range of applications, grows, the demand for low power high-performance systems also increases. Solutions to address these issues have been presented in the literature, addressing techniques to increase performance by replacing software features, namely RTOS primitives, by hardware implementations. this paper presents an acceleration technique at a lower level: the runtime environment. Hardwiring part of a programming language's runtime environment decreases the required time to perform a task, offering acceleration at a low-level, transparent to higher-level layers. the developed technique was implemented on a FPGA based RISC processor;experimental results showed a decrease in the time required to perform a given task of up to 16%.

Recent research advocates performance heterogeneous multicore processors, where cores in the same processor have same instruction set architecture (ISA) but often different performance characteristics. these architectures are able to deliver higher performance per watt and area for programs with diverse architectural requirements than comparable homogeneous ones. However, such power and area efficiencies of performance heterogeneous multicore systems can only be accomplished when thread-to-core assignment is made according to the characteristics of both the workload and the core. In this paper, we propose a new metric, ASTPI (Average Stall time Per Instruction), to measure the properties of threads. We design, implement and evaluate a new online monitoring approach called ESHMP, which is based on the metric. Our evaluation in the Linux 2.6.21 operating system shows that ESHMP delivers scalability while adapting to a wide variety of applications. © 2011 ieee.

Many consumer embedded system products nowadays are built on platforms with System-On-a-Chip (SOC) in which two or more processor cores, which are not necessarily of the same type, are put into a single chip and form the architecture of Chip-level Multi-Processor (CMP). Although such platform is capable of achieving high performance at relatively low cost, the system architecture of CMP brings new challenges in system development and increases complexity in developing embedded software especially at the level of kernel or operating system. this paper presents our experience and some preliminary results from building a multi-kernel embedded system with high performance Inter-Process Communication (IPC) mechanism for application software running on the platform of a newly developed multi-core SOC, namely PAC Duo SOC, which is the latest product from the PAC (short for Parallel Architecture Core) Project implemented at Industry Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan. PAC Duo SOC is a heterogeneous multi-processor SOC composed of one ARM926 core serving as the general purpose processor (GPP) and two ITRI PAC DSP cores serving as the special purpose processors (SPP). We ported Linux operating system to run on the ARM926 processor and ported the real-time kernel Micro-C/OS-II to run on one PAC DSP core, leaving the other PAC DSP core with the option of running either another Micro-C/OS-II or a different kernel. To address the issues in IPC, a high performance message-passing mechanism is developed. Its design not only takes application-specific requirements into account but also takes advantages of hardware features. © 2011 ieee.

We present a viable communication infrastructure and protocols to support the versatile data exchange in a network of smart cameras. Each node in network is an embedded smart camera whose hardware/software architecture was carefully designed to meet the performance requirement while providing sufficient flexibility. We introduce a novel scalable clustering approach, which uses asynchronous event exchange among the neighboring camera nodes. the new software-based event exchange structure is integrated into a Hardware Object Request Broker (ORB), which guarantees the real-time performance for transmission in and the seamless design of the network. the empirical results from case studies prove the viability of the proposed event exchange for a set of FPGA-based embedded smart cameras.

the proliferation of multi-core architectures has led to explosive development of parallel applications using programming models, such as OpenMP, TBB, and Cilk, etc. With increasing number of cores, however, it becomes harder to efficiently schedule parallel applications on these resources since current multi-core runtime systems still lack efficient mechanisms to support collaborative scheduling of these applications. In this paper, we study feedback-driven adaptive scheduling based on work stealing, which provides an efficient solution for concurrently executing a set of applications on multi-core systems. To dynamically estimate the number of cores desired by each application, a stable feedback algorithm, called A-Deque, is proposed using the length of active deques, which more precisely captures the parallelism variation of the applications. Furthermore, a prototype system is built by extending the Cilk runtime system, and the experimental results show that feedback-driven scheduling algorithms have more advantages for scheduling parallel applications with dynamic changing parallelism, and better overall performances are achieved with more accurate and stable feedback mechanism. Compared with existing algorithms, A-Deque improves the performances by up to 19.13% and 28.96% with respect to average response time and processor utilization respectively. © 2011 ieee.

this article discusses a Neurofuzzy navigation strategy for sensor-based mobile robotics system. ATransputer computation power is used to carry out complicated needed computation (reading sensors data, deciding actions, outputting wheels data, system monitoring). Robot control mythology was run on a parallel computing environment known as Transputers. the Transputer embedded real-time controller was used onboard the robot to meet various intelligence requirements for the free navigation and obstacle avoidance. the control system consists of a hierarchy of robot behaviors. the mobile behavior control system was based on the use of a number of Transputers processors. Behavior methodology was based on the utilization of a structure of a five layers Neuro-fuzzy system that learns, trains, and adapts itself to the environment. © 2011 ieee.
