A high number of accidents in the European countries happen at intersections. this paper describes a system architecture with its environmental models and the single functions for a traffic unit control ACTROS family developed by the company SWARCO within the EU-project INTERSAFE-2. It details the different functional modules with focus on the Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe), which has been adopted as a general purpose IO device interconnect in automotive applications. Its features lead to a significant increase of safety at intersections based on state of the art sensors and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) real time communication.

Scoped memory management in RTSJ (real-time Specification for Java) achieves a level of predictability not found in applications that use garbage collection techniques. However, using scopes in the development process is a difficult task. Deciding on the appropriate number of scopes and which objects or threads should be allocated into them require assisting tools. this paper presents a simulation of railway control system executed in RTS2.2 virtual machine. Different scoped memory design models can be implemented in this simulation to measure the memory consumption for each overtime. Data obtained by the simulation when different scoped memory models implemented showed that the developer can compare and choose the most appropriate scoped memory design model that achieves the least memory footprint © 2011 ieee.

Most grid applications require the processing of large amounts of data stored at different locations across the network which makes optical grid infrastructures optimal for such applications. the increase in intensity of data- and communications of these applications calls for new mechanisms and theories on how to optimally allocate optical grid resources. Typical Divisible Load theory (DLT) makes optimal allocation of computational resources. In this paper, we introduce Network Aware Divisible Load Algorithm (NADLA) that extends DLT to optimally allocate both the computational and networking resources of an optical grid. We assume a data- and communications-intensive application where data is stored at different sites across the optical grid and can be divided into independent subsets to be processed in parallel at different sites. the algorithm defines an optimal data transfer schedule that defines when to transfer what data subsets to which sites across the optical grid in order to minimize the overall application completion time. It consists of two phases. In the first phase, NADLA provide load distribution that minimizes application completion time taking into account network connectivity and computational and networking resources availability. Site connectivity is estimated by considering the bandwidth and the expected free time of all the links connecting this site to other sites. In the second phase, a simple greedy algorithm is used to allocate computational and networking resources. Extensive Simulations are conducted to examine the performance of the proposed algorithm for different application types and sizes, and different optical grid topologies. Simulation results show the advantages of the proposed algorithm over the traditional DLT approach for the category of applications considered. © 2011 ieee.

In order to support real-time face recognition using a wireless camera network, we design a data acquisition service to quickly and reliably acquire face images of human subjects from multiple views and to simultaneously index each acquired image into its corresponding pose. In comparison with detection of frontal faces, the detection of non-frontal faces with unknown pose is a much more challenging problem that involves significant image processing. In this paper, we describe a collaborative approach in which multi-view camera geometry and inter-camera communication is utilized at run time to significantly reduce the required processing time. By doing so, we are able to achieve a high capture rate for both frontal and non-frontal faces and at the same time maintain a high detection accuracy. We implement our face acquisition system on a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Processor based embedded camera network and show that we can reliably acquire frontal faces at 11 fps and non-frontal faces at 10 fps on images captured at a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted growing interest in the last decade as an infrastructure to support a diversity of ubiquitous computing and cyber-physical systems. However, most research work has focused on protocols or on specific applications. As a result, there remains a clear lack of effective, feasible and usable system architectures that address both functional and non-functional requirements in an integrated fashion. In this paper, we outline the EMMON system architecture for large-scale, dense, real-time embedded monitoring. EMMON provides a hierarchical communication architecture together with integrated middleware and command and control software. It has been designed to use standard commercially-available technologies, while maintaining as much flexibility as possible to meet specific applications requirements. the EMMON architecture has been validated through extensive simulation and experimental evaluation, including a 300+ node test-bed, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest single-site WSN test-bed in Europe to date. © 2011 ieee.

Grid computing provides sharing of geographically distributed resources among large scale complex applications. Due to dynamic nature of resources in grid, there is a need of highly efficient job scheduling and resource management policies in grid. In this paper, a novel Grid Resource Scheduler (GRS) is proposed to effectively utilize the available resources in Grid. Proposed GRS contributes, an optimal job scheduling algorithm on Job Rank-Backfilling policy and a resource matching algorithm based on ranking of resources with best fit allocation model. Performance of GRS is measured by considering a web based BLAST algorithm - a bioinformatics application - . GRS aims in reducing;Make span of the job workflow and execution time of varied size jobs. the experimental results prove that proposed job scheduling and resource matching algorithms performs better when evaluated against widely used FCFS job scheduling and biggest free resource matching strategies. © 2011 ieee.

real-time embedded systems are becoming more complex to include multiple functionalities. Sharing a computing platform is a natural and effective solution to reducing the cost of those systems. However, the sharing can cause serious problems in mixed-criticality systems where applications have different levels of criticality. Certifying the mixed-criticality systems requires efficient scheduling algorithms and schedulability tests different from the ones used in single criticality systems. In this paper, we propose the first dynamic scheduling algorithm called CBEDF for certifiable mixed-criticality systems on a uniprocessor platform. We show that CBEDF dominates previously proposed algorithms OCBP. In addition, we propose a sufficient schedulability test for CBEDF. We demonstrate that the schedulability test of CBEDF outperforms that of the previously proposed algorithms by performing simulations using randomly generated instances of jobs. this paper presents Robotic Application Resource Management Services (RARMS), a collection of tools for integrating reusable software components of a wide class of robotic applications on Microsoft Windows, a general-purpose, commodity operating system. RARMS includes (1) a resource allocation tool called RAAPT-HV for partitioning the available processors into a specified number of virtual processors, allocating available resources to virtual processors and assigning robotic software components to virtual processors and (2) a robot-class scheduling service (RC SS) which helps independently developed components prioritize relative to each other in a way that is consistent with their timing requirements. these tools aim to provide time-sensitive components with satisfactory responsiveness in an open environment without serious impact on the performance of other components. To demonstrate the effectiveness of RARMS, we adopted for experimentation and evaluation purposes several commonlyused components of delivery robots, including face detection, speech recognition, video streaming and path planning. the results of our experiments showed that these tools can help to achieve satisfactory performance for these software components of robotic applications.

In this paper a novel approach for modelling Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) problem in wavelength-routed Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical networks is proposed. A new idea based on Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm is introduced for solving RWA problem which is known to be an NP-hard problem. In the proposed ABC-RWA approach every food source represents a possible and feasible lightpath between each original and destination node pair in demand matrix. the positions of food sources are modified by some artificial bees in the population where the aim is to discover the places of food sources. the food source with the highest nectar value seems to be a solution which is evaluated by the fitness function. the simulation results demonstrate the ability and efficiency of proposed approach for solving RWA in real-world optical networks. the proposed approach could be extended for dynamic RWA schemes in real-time applications and employed by network resilience architectures.
