real-time embedded systems (RTES) have an increasing role in controlling the IT that we use on a day-to-day basis. the behaviour of an RTES is not based solely on the interactions it might have with its surrounding environment, but also on the timing requirements it induces. As a result, ensuring that an RTES behaves correctly is non-trivial, especially after adding time as a new dimension to the complexity of the testing process. In previous research, we introduced a 'priority-based' approach which tested the logical and timing behaviour of an RTES modeled formally as UPPAAL timed Automata (UTA). the 'priority-based' approach was based on producing sets of timed test traces by achieving timing constraints coverage according to three sets of priorities, namely boundary, out-boundary and in-boundary. In this paper, we introduce a new testing tool 'GeTeX' that deploys the "priority-based" testing approach. GeTeX is a complete testing tool which generates timed test-cases from UTA models and executes them on the System Under Test (SUT) to identify faults. In its current version, GeTeX supports Control Area Network (CAN) applications.

the aim of this paper is to describe the method used to analyze timing properties of a Linux-based CAN-to-CAN gateway and to briefly present some of the analysis results. the considered gateway, implemented as an embedded system, can significantly simplify rapid prototyping of CAN-based distributed systems such as those used in automotive applications. the main interest was to measure the latencies induced by the gateway under the wide range of conditions such as various types of traffic, gateway configurations, additional system load and Linux kernel versions. the combinations of these conditions resulted in almost 400 different experiments and more than 600 graphs visualizing the results. A simple method to automate the experiments and to effectively draw conclusions from such a high number of experiments is proposed.

Handover delay in mobile communication causes degradation in system performance, especially when implemented in real-time applications. the first and most consuming phase in the handover process is the scanning phase. this paper focuses on the trigger and the sequence in which the scanning is done to optimize this process. In this paper, a scanning and handover triggering scheme is proposed. It combines between the multi-scanning concept and the dynamic adaptation of the scanning activity triggering according to the changing down rate of the signal strength of the serving base stations. In addition, an adaptive handover threshold is considered to adapt the handover triggering. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme reduces the handover delay and enhances the resources utilization.

the current trend in the silicon industry has been a steady migration towards Chip Multicore Processor (CMP) system to harvest more throughputs. However, chip multicore processors report higher values of soft errors, thereby degrading the overall system reliability. Hence, engineers have been wary of using CMP architectures for safety-critical embedded real-time system applications that require high reliability levels. the larger users of these processors also dictate the processor migration trends. With newer processor architectures, the older ones are destined to become obsolete. this paper compares typical safety-critical architectures and investigates the reliabilities of different CMP architectures. We present the fault tolerance framework and detailed reliability analysis of fault-tolerant single-core and multi-core based systems. the analysis results are then used to compare the reliability of CMP architectures with the corresponding reliability of single processor architectures. Although a CMP system does encounter degradation, by applying some system level dependability assurance mitigation features, its reliability can be enhanced. this enables CMP systems to be effectively deployed in critical applications.

TOPPERS Project is to develop a series of open source real time operating systems(RTOS) and other software stacks for embedded systems, also is one of the latest devel- opments of ITRON specification, which is de-facto standard real time kernel specification in Japan. TOPPERS/ASP kernel is the core and foundation of TOPPERS Project, also is an exploration and protype of next generation RTOS. this paper makes a performance evaluation between TOPPERS/ASP kernel and other three well-known RTOSs, RTEMS, FreeRTOS, and μC/OS-II. By comparison in performance, the validity in design and features of TOPPERS/ASP kernel can be testified and presented.

Usually, first responders estimate the medical needs in mass casualties scenarios from subjective observations gathered through uncoordinated emergency calls from non-experts in the incident location. Accordingly, they command specific teams to move to the location. At arrival the teams make local measurements, based on which they rank the priorities of patients, and give local treatments or decide to transport them to a specific hospital. Nevertheless the advances in the measurement of vital signs, still the human estimation may be error prone and not-in-time since usually the ratio of first responders to casualties can reach one to hundreds or even thousands in some cases. In this paper, we present a novel method to rank the urgency level of mass casualties through a localized ad-hoc sensor network and localized real-time (RT) sensor data processing. Our approach is based on plain patient to patient communication without relying on the existence of first responders nor a communication infrastructure. this allows for the first time to classify, rank and schedule casualties without experts in the loop. the casualties, the responders and the administration gains are very compelling.

Alzheimer Disease (AD) has become a major issue in developed countries due to medical advances that have extended the population longevity. Recent advances in early detection date the initial stages of AD several years before the first recognizable symptoms appear visible. While at present time, there has not been recognized a single cause for AD, the common approach to support the diagnosis is based on diagnostic image processing, psychological tests, neurological tests, etc. this method produces a large amount of data that has to be taken into account by the physicians when they perform their diagnosis. In this paper we present a Knowledge Engineering diagnosis support tool for the detection of AD where ontologies and semantic reasoning play a fundamental role. Our work is intended to aid physicians in the early detection of AD by using multidisciplinary knowledge gathered, and inference and reasoning over the underlying Knowledge Bases.

Problem: In Taiwan, approximately 62.1% of all music majors in universities have suffered musculoskeletal injuries. [1] Health Promotion in Schools of Music conference (HPSM) 2004 proposed that university music departments provide a “course that covers the occupational health concerns related to music.” [5] the conference concluded that schools of music play a vital role in helping reduce the incidence of performance-related injuries, as first contact medical surrogates. therefore, the courses on Health Promotion for Music Performers (HPMP) are important for the students of music majors. HPMP course needs the interdisciplinary experts, music and medical experts. Method: In the research, we use e-learning on the courses, Health Promotion for Music Performers. To facilitate cross-domain interaction and cross-school mentoring, an e-learning model was adopted. the collaborative efforts of the Department of Music at the National HsinChu University of Education (NHCUE) Department of Music and the Department of Family Medicine at the National Taiwan University (NTU) College and Hospital of Medicine enabled NHCUE's Graduate Institute of Music to conduct the `Health Promotion for Music Performers' (HPMP) Course and adopted an e-learning model since the spring of 2009. Result: HPMP course by e-learning will make the medical expert easy to get the teaching aids and case experiment sharing by e-learning in his hospital. After transitioning to an e-learning model, HPMP now utilizes the JoinNet digital platform.

In work on globally-scheduled soft real-time multiprocessor systems, analysis has been presented for dealing with self-suspensions, but this analysis can be pessimistic. In this paper, we present an approach that is designed to improve the schedulability of such systems. In experimental results that are presented, the proposed approach signi cantly improved schedulability in most considered scenarios.

this paper presents RapidRT, a novel statistical approach to Worst-Case Response-time (WCRT) analysis targeting complex embedded real-time systems. the proposed algorithm combines Extreme Value theory (EVT) and other statistical methods in order to produce a probabilistic WCRT estimate. this estimate is calculated using response time data from either Monte Carlo simulations of a detailed model of the system, or from response-time measurements of the real system. the method could be considered as a pragmatic approach intended for complex industrial systems with real-time requirements. the target systems contain tasks with many intricate dependencies in their temporal behavior, which violates the assumptions of traditional analytical methods for response time analysis and thereby makes them overly pessimistic. An evaluation is presented using two simulation models, inspired by an industrial robotic control system, and five other methods as reference.
