System execution traces are useful artifacts for capturing distributed system behavior and validating quality-of-service (QoS) properties, such as end-to-end response time, throughput, and scalability. Although system execution traces assist in validating QoS properties, system execution traces are very dense. this is because system execution traces capture a system's complete behavior and execution in its target environment, which can consist of many components deployed across many hosts that execute for long periods of time. It therefore can be hard for distributed system testers to effectively analyze different views of QoS properties using system execution traces and/or pinpoint performance bottlenecks that need to be resolved. this paper provides two contributions on validating distributed system QoS properties. First, this paper presents Aspects for System Execution Traces (AsSET), which is a join point model for applying aspects to system execution traces and enabling context-based analysis of system execution traces. Secondly, it shows how applying AsSET to a representative enterprise distributed system can improve QoS analytical capabilities for distributed system testers. the tools and techniques discussed in this paper have been realized in an open-source system execution modeling tool named CUTS, which is currently used on several industry-related projects.

With a good location estimation integrated into a Wi-Fi surveillance system, system administrator can closely monitor the network traffic as well as the behavior of the mobile users. Hence, there is a growing demand to have a quick and efficient way to indentify a specific group of people, or devices or asset within a controlled wireless network. In our proposed system, all the Wi-Fi traffic and information especially the MAC addresses and RSSI from the mobile clients (i.e. Wi-Fi devices) can be sniffed by an open-source Wi-Fi access point (AP) with custom-made embedded software program and without pre-loading any client program on the mobile user devices. these sniffed information is then analyzed and stored in a database which will help network administrator to monitor the wireless network for surveillance purpose and security concerns. In summary, this paper proposes a wireless LAN system that can detect, locate and track down wireless communication within the system by modifying the embedded software in off-the-shelf WLAN APs. Experiment results have shown that abnormal wireless activities can be detected and by our signal strength based localization algorithm, positions of these wireless mobile devices can be identified and be tracked within meters inside our WLAN system.

NAND flash memory has gained its popularity in a variety of applications as a storage medium due to its low power consumption, non-volatility, high performance, physical stability, and portability. In particular, Multi-Level Cell (MLC) flash memory, which provides a lower cost and higher density solution, has occupied the largest part of NAND flash-memory market share. However, MLC flash memory also introduces new challenges: (1) Pages in a block must be written sequentially. (2) Information to indicate a page being obsoleted cannot be recorded in its spare area. this paper designs an MLC Flash Translation Layer (MFTL) for flash-memory storage systems which takes new constraints of MLC flash memory and access behaviors of file system into consideration. A series of trace-driven simulations is conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme. Our experiment results show that the proposed MFTL outperforms other related works in terms of the number of extra page writes, the number of total block erasures, and the memory requirement for the management.

Recently, the negative effect of the popular power management technique Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) on the system reliability has been identified. As a result, various reliability-aware power management (RAPM) schemes have been studied for uniprocessor real-time systems. In this paper, we investigate global-scheduling-based RAPM (G-RAPM) schemes for a set of frame-based real-time tasks running on a homogeneous multiprocessor system. An important dimension of the problem is how to select the appropriate subset of tasks for energy and reliability management (i.e., schedule a recovery for each selected task and scale down their executions). We show that making this decision optimally (i.e., the static G-RAPM problem) is NP-hard. then we propose two efficient G-RAPM heuristics, which rely on local and global task selections, respectively. Moreover, to reclaim dynamic slack generated at runtime, we extend the slack sharing based global dynamic power management scheme to the reliability-aware settings. the proposed schemes are evaluated through extensive simulations. the results show that our static G-RAPM heuristics can preserve system reliability while achieving significant energy savings (within 3% of an upper bound for most cases). Moreover, G-RAPM with global task selection provides better opportunities for dynamic slack reclamation and up to 15% more energy savings can be obtained at runtime compared to that of local task selection.

We discuss the initial phases of software development of a real industrial safety-related device in the railway application domain. In particular, to achieve greater confidence in the system, we illustrate the development of the system architecture (using a standard model domain-specific language), the computation of the safety integrity level and the calculation of the reliability of the whole system. High-integrity systems are deployed in order to realize safety-critical applications. To meet the rigorous requirements in this domain, these systems require a sophisticated approach to design, verfication, and certification. Not only safety considerations have an impact on a product's overall dependability, but also security has to be taken into account. In this paper we analyze the time-Triggered System-on-Chip (TTSoC) architecture, which is a novel architecture for Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) devices, regarding its security properties. We discuss essential compliance criteria to the Multiple Independent Layers of Security (MILS) architecture, which is a industry-ready architecture for embedded high-integrity systems. We found that both architectures share intrinsic properties and we are able to show that the TTSoC architecture implements the core requirements of a MILS Separation Kernel and thus realizes its elementary security policies by design. © 2010 ieee.

embedded real-time systems often operate under energy constraints due to a limited battery lifetime. Modern processors provide techniques for dynamic voltage and frequency scaling to reduce energy consumption. However, while the processor possibly operates at a lower clock frequency, the running applications should still meet their deadlines and thus set some limits to the use of scaling techniques. In this paper, we propose autocorrelation clustering (ACC) as a technique to predict the workload of single iterations of a periodic soft real-time application. Based on this prediction we adjust the processor performance such that deadlines are exactly met. We compare our technique to the broadly implemented race-to-idle (RTI) and identify situations where ACC can gain higher energy savings than RTI. Additionally, ACC can help saving energy in multithreaded processors where RTI can be applied only with a high overhead if at all. © 2010 ieee.

Multi-cores are the contemporary solution to satisfy high performance and low energy demands in general and embedded computing domains. However, currently available multi-cores are not feasible to be used in safety-critical environments with hard real-time constraints. Hard real-time tasks running on different cores must be executed in isolation or their interferences must be time-bounded. thus, new requirements also arise for a real-time operating system (RTOS), in particular if the parallel execution of hard real-time applications should be supported. In this paper we focus on the MERASA1 system software as an RTOS developed on top of the MERASA multi-core processor. the MERASA system software fulfils the requirements for time-bounded execution of parallel hard real-time tasks. In particular we focus on thread control with synchronisation mechanisms, memory management and resource management requirements. Our evaluations show that all system software functions are time-bounded by a worst-case execution time (WCET) analysis. © 2010 ieee.

In this paper, we propose a novel, non-invasive monitoring technique which allows rapid detection of timing-constraint violations in real-time embedded systems which have a time-triggered system architecture. the monitoring technique combines knowledge of the system's (static) task schedule and real-time measurements of the CPU power consumption in order to detect faults. We demonstrate the feasibility of our technique through a series of empirical studies. We conclude that the approach is practical, even in systems with sever cost constraints. © 2010 ieee.
