Currently, Java has been gradually applied in embedded real-time area with the improvement by the real-time Specification for Java (RTSJ). Accordingly, a hardware Java execution engine for embedded real-time applications, JPOR-32 (32-bit Java Processor Optimized for RTSJ), is designed. Taking JPOR-32 for an example, this paper presents the garbage collection mechanism for RTSJ-oriented embedded processor in detail. JPOR-32 provides effective architectural support for garbage collection. And the object reference format of JPOR-32 provides supports for objects tracing and heap scanning. the support for write barrier of real-time concurrent GC is also performed. Moreover, JPOR- 32 provides optimized instruction level support for garbage collection. In addition, different garbage collection algorithms are compared on the base of the resource-constrained feature and the real-time requirement of the processor, and the hybrid garbage collectors are suggested. © 2010 ieee.

the increase of computational power in embedded systems has allowed integrating together hard real-time tasks and rich applications. Complex SW infrastructures containing both RTOS and GPOS are required to handle this complexity. To optimally map system functionality to the hard-RT SW domain, to the general purpose SW domain or to HW peripherals, early performance evaluations at the first steps of the design process are required. Approximate timed co-simulation has been proposed as a fast solution for system modeling at early design steps. this co-simulation technique allows simulating systems at speed close to functional execution, while considering timing effects. As a consequence, system performance estimations can be obtained early, allowing efficient design space exploration and system refinement. To achieve fast simulation speed, the SW code is pre-annotated with time information. the annotated code is then natively executed, performing what is called native-based co-simulation. Previous native-based simulation environments are not prepared to model multi-OS systems, so the performance evaluation of the different SW domains is not possible. this paper proposes a new embedded system modeling solution considering dual RTOS/GPOS systems. A real Linux-based infrastructure has been modeled an integrated into a state-of-the-art co-simulation environment. the resulting solution is capable of modeling and evaluating all HW and SW system components providing the designer with valuable information for early system optimization and design space exploration. © 2010 ieee.

Development of network monitoring tools for real-time rich-media (RTRM) applications remains a challenge for both academic and industrial researchers as the complexity of the computational processing varies dynamically. We propose a novel, flexible and cost effective technique which can be implemented in ordinary network environment to monitor QoS parameters such as packet-delay, packet-loss, packet sequence and jitter, of RTP based real-time video/audio applications without introducing the conventional packet processing delays between end points. We have implemented a test-bed to analyze the QoS parameters for real-time video streaming application. the initial test results prove that the proposed technique promises that the QoS experienced by end user can significantly be improved compared to the conventional methods. © 2010 ieee.

Previous preemptive real-time (m, k)-firm schedulers all try a best effort policy to dispatch k - m executions when m out of k consecutive task executions have met their deadlines. these additional executions can only bring value to the system if no firm deadline is missed. In this paper we present a framework whereby an on-line feasibility test is carried out on these k - m executions before dispatching them. With our scheme, all dispatched tasks are guaranteed to meet their deadlines. © 2010 ieee.

As the need for embedded systems to interact with other systems is growing fast, we see great opportunities in introducing the hardware-in-the-loop technique to the field of hardware/software co-design of embedded systems. this technique reduces the need to develop models for existing hardware and increases the accuracy of the overall system. this work is especially important now that complexity and time-to-market constraints demand early simulation, verification, and architectural exploration of systems. We introduce the hardware-in-the loop technique to the field of hardware/software co-design of industrial embedded systems using SystemC as the modeling environment. We conceptualize the hybrid channel to clearly define the communication between real and virtual (modeled) subsystems. We patch the SystemC kernel for hard real-time execution and we improve the underlying operating system to guarantee an upper bound for the overall system latency. We have performed tests to measure the performance of our method in terms of response time and determinism. We have achieved a stable operating frequency of 10 KHz and an I/O performance of sub-millisecond round-trip time over Ethernet. Moreover we have developed a non-timed transaction-level model of a BACnet Broadcast Management Device (BBMD) and connected it with real devices to see our method's performance in a real-life environment. Our model outperformed the competing real system up to 80 times in maximum response time. We deem the results very promising for the future of our method. © 2010 ieee.

thermal management is becoming a critical issue in computing system design as the processor power continues to grow exponentially. Since high power consumption leads to high temperature, and high temperature in turn dramatically increases the leakage power consumption, a thermal management technique becomes ineffective if this temperature/leakage relation is not properly addressed in the deep sub-micron domain. this paper incorporates the leakage/temperature dependency into real-time scheduling analysis and presents a novel real-time scheduling method that can reduce the peak temperature when scheduling a hard real-time periodic task set. We formally prove the correctness of the proposed algorithm based on a processor model that can effectively account for the leakage/temperature relationship. the experimental results validate the assumptions of our scheduling method and also demonstrate its effectiveness in terms of feasibility improvement and peak temperature reduction. © 2010 ieee.

Massively Distributed embedded systems (MDES) such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are gaining increasing attention, since they enable a broad range of novel applications starting from monitoring oceans to exploring distant planets. WSNs consist of hundreds of nodes that have typically very limited recourses (computational, memory, energy, etc.) and are deployed in a dynamic environment, where they have to continuously adapt to new conditions. Due to the small-size requirement of the nodes, they are highly resource-constrained. Because of that, the amount of functionality that may be present in each node is limited. therefore, cooperation between nodes is needed in order to accomplish complex tasks. these facts turn the design of applications for WSNs into a challenge. A promising approach how to deal with it is to use the emergent self-organization metaphor. In this paper a new process algebra (PA) called "Locality-aware extension of π-Calculus" is presented. the algebra is one of several techniques included in a new design methodology for the design of self-organizing behavior in MDES. the method is based on π-Calculus and allows a high-level description of interactions among processes. As the most important characteristic of self-organization is the restriction of interactions to neighboring elements (localized interactions), we extend the π-Calculus with locality awareness, a necessary abstraction to allow the modeling of self-organization in MDES. To get full locality awareness in π-Calculus, we extended it with concepts for modeling spatiality, probability and time. Moreover, new types of channels are included to cover various types of communication such as distribution, broadcast and aggregation. In order to validate this new PA, we successfully model a self-organizing clustering algorithm for WSNs. © 2010 ieee.

Current hard real-time scheduling and analysis techniques are unable to efficiently utilize the computational bandwidth provided by multicore platforms. this is due to the large gap between worst-case execution time predictions used in schedulability analysis and actual execution times seen in practice. In this paper, we view this gap as "slack" that can be accounted for during schedulability analysis and reclaimed for less critical work. We use this technique to develop an architecture for scheduling mixed-criticality real-time workloads on multiprocessor platforms. Our architecture provides temporal isolation among tasks of different criticalities while allowing slack to be redistributed across criticality levels. © 2010 ieee.

Nowadays, there is a trend in industrial systems towards the use of common-off-the-shelf (COTS) components to develop applications which interact with open systems. this trend includes among others the use of high-level languages, such as Java, and Internet protocols (TCP-IP, HTTP, and Web Services). However, although many industrial systems use these technologies at their business layers, they are far from offering a homogeneous programming platform in their most internal infrastructures. this paper contributes to change the current practice introducing a real-time Java-centric approach for industrial systems. In the core of the architecture, special entities (named DCP Java-nodes) equipped with real-time technology offer predictable interoperation between the industrial field and the Internet. In addition to the architecture, the paper also describes an initial assessment on the performance that may be expected from this kind of infrastructure. © 2010 ieee.

Energy consumption is often a hard constraint of embedded real-time systems. Modern processors provide techniques for dynamic voltage and frequency scaling to reduce energy consumption. However, while the processor possibly operates at a lower clock frequency, the running applications should still meet their deadlines and thus set some limits to the use of scaling techniques. In this paper, we propose AutoCorrelation Clustering as a technique to predict the workload of each single iteration of a periodic soft real-time application. Based on this prediction we adjust the processor performance such that all deadlines are met as exactly as possible. We compare our technique to the broadly implemented race-to-idle and identify situations where autocorrelation clustering can gain higher energy savings than race-to-idle. Additionally, autocorrelation clustering can help saving energy in multithreaded processors where race-to-idle can be applied only with a high overhead if at all. We evaluated our approach by simulating the execution of a MPEG decoder on the multithreaded CarCore processor model. © 2010 ieee.
