Development of modern context-aware applications requires the acquisition and interpretation of data from one or more sensors. this paper presents a framework designed to enable developers of such applications to focus on high level design and functionalities rather than spending time in low level implementation details. the framework enables this behavior and tight real-time control of a sensor inferencing workload by representing it with a directed acyclic graph and by providing horizontal capabilities in order to adapt to a number of different usages. the main features enabled by the framework are reusability across algorithms, standard interfaces among them, improved efficiency through easy to use optimization techniques, and parallel processing of different workloads. We will show how the framework can be used to implement a number of disparate workloads that enable a range of context aware use cases, describe its implementation and finally discuss future work. © 2010 ieee.

Future systems will have to support multiple and concurrent dynamic compute-intensive applications, while respecting real-time and energy consumption constraints. With the increase in the design complexity of MPSoC architectures that must support these constraints, flexible and accurate simulators become a necessity for exploring the vast design space solutions. In this paper, we present an asymmetric MPSoC simulator environment, named SESAM. this tool can be used for the architecture exploration and optimization, and the design of a complete MPSoC solution for dynamic application processing. Its performances and capabilities are demonstrated through a complete MPSoC platform and an implementation of the component labeling algorithm. © 2010 ieee.

Scratchpad memory (SPM) is software-controlled on-chip SRAM memory and widely used in embedded processors to meet the strict requirements on performance, energy consumption and real-time response of embedded systems. this paper proposes an SPM based I/O approach, called Virtual I/O based on SPM (SPMIO), to accelerate the I/O access time efficiently through SPM. Different I/O requests are buffered and scheduled on SPM through SPMIO with the help of ScratchPad Memory Operating System (SPMOS). SPMIO will provide the direct datapath to CPU for I/O accesses, reduce delays and lower the power consumption. the experimental results show that SPMIO is efficient and practical. © 2010 ieee.

Many emerging embedded real-time applications such as SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), autonomous vehicles and advanced avionics, require a high degree of dependability. Dealing with tasks having both hard real-time requirements and high reliability constraints is a key challenge faced in such systems. this paper addresses the problem of guaranteeing reliability requirements with bounded recovery times on fail-stop processors in fault-tolerant multiprocessor real-time systems. We classify tasks based on their recovery-time requirements into (i) Hard Recovery, (ii) Soft Recovery, and (iii) Best-Effort Recovery tasks. then, the notion of a Hot Standby for Hard Recovery tasks along with a Cold Standby for Soft Recovery and Best-Effort Recovery tasks is introduced. In order to maximize the benefits of using a Hot Standby, replicas should not be co-located on the same processor. For this purpose, we propose a task allocation algorithm for Hot Standby replicas called R-BFD (Reliable Best-Fit Decreasing) that uses 37% fewer number of processors than BFD-P (Best-Fit Decreasing augmented with placement constraints). For tasks with more relaxed recovery-time constraints, however, additional optimization can be applied by using a Cold Standby that gets activated only when failures occur. Given a system reliability requirement and hence a maximum number of processor failures to tolerate, the required resource overprovisioning for Cold Standby replicas from multiple processors can be consolidated. An algorithm called R-BATCH (Reliable Bin-packing Algorithm for Tasks with Cold standby and Hot standby) reduces the required number of processors by up to 45% compared to R-BFD-based pure Hot Standby replication technique. © 2010 ieee.

Superblocks represent regions in a program code that consist of multiple basic blocks. Compilers benefit from this structure since it enables optimization across block boundaries. this increased optimization potential was thoroughly studied in the past for average-case execution time (ACET) reduction at assembly level. In this paper, the concept of superblocks is exploited for the optimization of embedded real-time systems that have to meet stringent timing constraints specified by the worst-case execution time (WCET). To achieve this goal, our superblock formation is based on a novel trace selection algorithm which is driven by WCET data. Moreover, we translate superblocks for the first time from assembly to source code level. this approach enables an early code restructuring in the optimizer, providing more optimization opportunities for both subsequent source code and assembly level transformations. An adaption of the traditional optimizations common subexpression and dead code elimination to our WCET-aware superblocks allows an effective WCET reduction. Using our techniques, we significantly outperform standard optimizations and achieve an average WCET reduction of up to 10.2% for a total of 55 real-life benchmarks. © 2010 ieee.

Rate Monotonic scheduling algorithm is widely used in real-time systems and embedded systems for its implementation simplicity and optimality in fixed priority scheduling. Since determining the schedulability of a task set in Rate Monotonic scheduling is an important step in designing a real-time system, schedulability analysis has been extensively studied. Although there is an exact schedulability test method for Rate Monotonic scheduling, the exact test is too complex to be executed on-line for large number of tasks because it is based on the response time calculation which is NP-hard. thus many researchers studied on polynomial time sufficient conditions on Rate Monotonic schedulability. the existing polynomial time sufficient conditions are in the form of a utilization bound;that is, if a task set's total utilization is not larger than a utilization bound, the task set is accepted as schedulable one. though the utilization bound tests are simple, they suffer from poor processor utilization. In this paper, we propose a new sufficient schedulability condition based on the response time test, different from the previous approaches. the new test provides a condition that is both necessary and sufficient for task sets with period ratio less than 2, while the previous tests provide only sufficient conditions. Extensive simulations show that our test significantly outperforms the existing tests with utilization bound. © 2010 ieee.

real time application with replicated data in grid environment has received particular attention for providing efficient access, fault tolerance and enhance the performance of the system. this paper presents the new failure semantic to manage neighbour replication data in distributed environment. the failure semantic classes include the transaction abort and system failures. We address how to build reliable system for managing replication and transaction based on Neighbour Replication Grid (NRG) Transaction Model in terms to preserve the data consistency and support fault tolerance when exists the neighbour replica failure in quorum. In addition, we present an implementation of the propose failure semantic through NRG daemon by deploying real time application in distributed systems. the implementation shows that managing transactions on NRG through the failure semantic provides fault tolerance capabilities that allow it to withstand failure both in handling quorum locking and the transaction execution. © 2010 ieee.

Multimedia execution in high-quality consumer electronics must handle frequent changes in the resource demands of the running applications. these changes can be due to, for instance, a switch in the nature of the incoming media or a user trigger to change the visual focus to a different application. these situations require real-time adaptation mechanisms to adjust the system operation to the new requirements seamlessly. Contract-based resource management allows dealing with these transitions guaranteeing that greedy multimedia applications do not suffer execution interference. A contract model has to be based on efficient resource budget assignment and enforcement to application tasks;this ensures transitioning to the new situation in a stable and safe way but at the cost of having a rigid resource allocation and enforcement to tasks. this paper presents a simple priority reassignment scheme based on uniform priority bands to allow that overrunning tasks execute if they do not threaten timely execution of non-overrunning tasks. It is described how this scheme is integrated with an effective resource accounting and monitoring mechanism;this integration serves as the basic mechanism to support dynamic adaptation in multimedia embedded systems. As proof of concept, this approach has been implemented in a QoS Resource Manager that follows the HOLA-QoS architecture. the experimental results show how multimedia application execution using the simple priority reassignment scheme on top of a resource accounting mechanism preserves timely multimedia delivery. © 2010 ieee.

this paper addresses the optimization of parallel simulators for large-scale parallel systems and applications. Such simulators are often based on parallel discrete event simulation with conservative or optimistic protocols to synchronize the simulating processes. the paper considers how available future information about events and application behaviors can be efficiently extracted and further exploited to improve the performance of adaptive optimistic protocols. First, we extract information about future events and their dependencies in application traces to guide adaptive adjustments of time window in trace-driven parallel simulation. Second, we use information about application behaviors, specifically the iterative behavior found in many applications, to avoid the unnecessary adjustments of time window. these techniques are implemented in the BigSim simulator and tested by real-world and standard benchmark applications including Jacobi3D and HPL. the results show that our optimization approaches can reduce the execution times of simulation ranging from 11% up to 32%. Moreover, our methods are easy to implement and don't need to augment compilers or even modify the core codes of parallel simulators. © 2010 ieee.
