Dynamic resource allocation has the potential to provide significant increases in total revenue in enterprise systems through the reallocation of available resources as the demands on hosted applications change over time. this paper investigates the combination of workload prediction algorithms and switching policies: the former aim to forecast the workload associated with Internet services, the latter switch resources between applications according to certain system criteria. An evaluation of two well known switching policies - the proportional switching policy (PSP) and the bottleneck aware switching policy (BSP) - is conducted in the context of seven workload prediction algorithms. this study uses real-world workload traces consisting of approximately 3.5M requests, and models a multi-tiered, cluster-based, multi-server solution. the results show that a combination of the bottleneck aware switching policy and workload predictions based on an autoregressive, integrated, moving-average model can improve system revenue by as much as 43%. © 2010 ieee.

To maintain, analyze and reuse many of today's Complex real-time embedded systems (CRTES) is very difficult and expensive, which, nevertheless, offers high business value in response to great concern in industry. In such context, not only functional behavior but also non-functional properties of systems have to be assured, i.e., Worst-Case Response time (WCRT) of tasks has to be known. However, due to high complexity of such systems and the nature of the problem, the exact WCRT of tasks is impossible to find in practice, but may only be bounded. In addition, the existing relatively well developed theories for modeling and analysis of real-time systems are having problems which limit their application in the context. In this paper, we address this challenge by presenting a framework for approximate timing analysis of CRTES, namely AESIR-CORES, which provides a tight interval of WCRT estimates of tasks by the usage of two novel contributions. Our evaluation using three models inspired by two fictive but representative industrial CRTES indicates that AESIR-CORES can either successfully obtain the actual WCRT values, or have the potential to bound the unknown actual WCRT values from a statistical perspective. © 2010 ieee.

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems control and monitor industrial and critical infrastructure functions, such as electricity, gas, water, waste, railway and traffic. Recently, SCADA systems have been targeted by an increasing number of attacks from the Internet due to its growing connectivity to Enterprise networks. Traditional techniques and models of identifying attacks, and quantifying its impact cannot be directly applied to SCADA systems because of their limited resources and real-time operating characteristics. this paper introduces a novel framework for evaluating survivability of SCADA systems from a service-oriented perspective. the proposed framework uses an analytical model to evaluate the status of services and the survivability of the overall system using queuing theory and Bayesian networks. Preliminary results are shown and some improvements on the model are identified. © 2010 ieee.

the move towards Network Enabled Capability (NEC) by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is designed to achieve enhanced military effect through the networking and coherent integration of existing and future resources including sensors, weapon systems, and decision makers to achieve greater agility in the prosecution of military operations. One of the many challenges of realizing NEC is engineering systems to cope with change in a highly dynamic mobile environment. this paper presents our experience in realizing NEC through a proof-of-concept software demonstrator. It adopts an architectural approach, based on the principles of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), to deliver dependable, dynamic systems integration in the context of surveillance capability coping with variable availability of static and mobile sensors. Consideration of the delivery of NEC indicates that SOA can support evolutionary development and dependable operation through real-time discovery and fault-tolerance. © 2010 ieee.

the complexity of modern networked information systems, as well as all the defense-in-depth best practices, require distributed intrusion detection architectures relying on the cooperation of multiple components. Similar solutions cause a multiplication of alerts, thus increasing the time needed for alert management and hiding the few critical alerts as needles in a hay stack. We propose an innovative distributed architecture for intrusion detection that is able to provide system administrators with selective and early security warnings. this architecture is suitable to large networks composed by several departments because it leverages hierarchical and peer-to-peer cooperation schemes among distributed NIDSes. Moreover, it embeds a distributed alert ranking system that makes it possible to evaluate the real level of risk represented by a security alert generated by a NIDS, and it allows independent network departments to exchange early warnings about critical threats. thanks to these features, a system administrator can focus on the few alerts that represent a real threat for the controlled infrastructure and can be notified about the most dangerous intrusions before his department is attacked. © 2010 ieee.

Dependable communication is becoming a critical factor due to the pervasive usage of networked embedded systems that increasingly interact with human lives in many real-thne applications. Controller Area Network (CAN) has gained wider acceptance as a standard in a large number of industrial applications, mostly due to its efficient bandwidth utilization, ability to provide real-time guarantees, as well as its fault-tolerant capability. However;the native CAN fault-tolerant mechanism assumes that all messages transmitted on the bus are equally critical, which has an adverse impact on the message latencies, results in the inability to meet user defined reliability requirements, and, in some cases, even leads to violation of timing requirements. As the network potentially needs to cater to messages of multiple criticality levels (and hence varied redundancy requirements) scheduling them in an efficient fault-tolerant manner becomes an important research issue. We propose a methodology which enables the provision of appropriate guarantees in CAN scheduling of messages with mixed criticalities. the proposed approach involves definition of fault-tolerant feasibility windows of execution for critical messages, and off-line derivation of optimal message priorities that fulfill the user specified level of fault-tolerance.

DVFS is an efficient energy saving technique for processors during program execution time. In this paper, a critical speed-based DVFS mechanism that we have implemented on the Android operating system is introduced. Our studies indicate that due to memory accesses, decreasing the frequency may not always reduce the energy consumption. A critical speed is thus defined as the CPU frequency with which the energy consumption can be minimized. In our mechanism, a prediction equation based on the correlation of the memory access rate and the critical speed was constructed and used to choose a suitable frequency and voltage dynamically at run time. Our initial experiment results show that for real applications running on Android, the energy consumption can be effectively reduced. © 2010 ieee.

Although preemptive scheduling mostly dominates non-preemptive scheduling from a feasibility perspective, developers of systems with resource constraints may sometimes choose to implement the latter. Amongst the available techniques for scheduling these systems, non-preemptive EDF (npEDF) is known to be an attractive option. However as with most non-preemptive forms of scheduling, problems may still arise due to the single-tasking nature of its operation. In particular npEDF can be highly susceptible to complete system failures ('timeline breaks') due to errors affecting only a single task. this paper will present a simple Overrun Detection and Recovery Mechanism (ODRM) that may help to alleviate this problem, by detecting task failures in such a fashion that subsequent task deadlines are not missed in a'domino-style' manner. It also allows for the optional execution of a recovery handler. the technique is applied to a case study consisting of a real-time control system for an unstable process;the paper describes initial results which indicate ODRM allows for an improved ability to tolerate task failures, and has a minimal impact on scheduling overhead. © 2010 ieee.

embedded media applications have traditionally used custom ASICs to meet their real-time performance requirements. However, the combination of increasing chip design cost and availability of commodity many-core processors is making programmable devices increasingly attractive alternatives. Yet for these processors to be successful in this role, programming systems are needed that can automate the task of mapping the applications to the tens-tohundreds of cores on current and future many-core processors, while simultaneously guaranteeing the real-time throughput constraints. this paper presents a block-parallel program description for embedded real-time media applications and automatic transformations including buffering and parallelization to ensure the program meets the throughput requirements. these transformations are enabled by starting with a high-level, yet intuitive, application description. the description builds on traditional stream programming structures by adding simple control and serialization constructs to enable a greater variety of applications. the result is an application description that provides a balance of flexibility and power to the programmer, while exposing the application structure to the compiler at a high enough level to enable useful transformations without heroic analysis. © 2010 ieee.
