Deep learning (DL) has dramatically evolved and become one of the most successful machine learning techniques. A variety of DL-enabled applications have been widely integrated into software systems, including embedded ones. Although having achieved very successful results in accuracy, the large size of deep neural networks could require significant runtime and computing resource consumption. To overcome these drawbacks, TensorRT has been developed and may be incorporated into popular DL frameworks such as PyTorch and Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX). In this paper, focusing on inference, we provide a comprehensive evaluation on the performances of TensorRT. Specifically, we evaluate inference output validation, inference time, inference throughput, and GPU memory usage. Our results demonstrate that TensorRT is able to significantly improve the inference efficiency metrics without compromising inference accuracy. Furthermore, TensorRT may be adopted via several alternative workflows. Our evaluation also shows the pros and cons of these TensorRT workflows. We analyze that for each workflow and discuss the workflow selection for different application scenarios. © 2022 ieee.

embedded systems often need to react in a timely manner. Life-critical or mission-critical ones require assurance that they comply with these real-time requirements. In particular, schedulability analysis is both essential and difficult to get right. Formal methods can help as they are a powerful tool for ensuring properties with the highest assurance level. We describe a case study for the FPP and EDF policies providing end-to-end assurance by connecting the schedulability analysis tool Prosa and the real-time OS kernel RT-CertiKOS, both using the Coq proof assistant to prove their results. Analyzing precisely the key ideas underlying this connection, we improve it to make it more generic and reduce the associated proof burden. We thus sketch a refined method which allows for providing formal schedulability guarantees to other OSes or low-level components with minimal effort.

In response to the increasing complexity of real-time embedded software, driven by the need for intelligent computation in constrained environments, multicore architectures have emerged as a promising solution. the challenge lies in to choose an effective mapping of the real-time tasks to the various computational resources of these embedded boards, while ensuring real-time constraint satisfaction. To address this problem, our approach rests on two pillars. the first is a domain-specific language designed to capture hardware and software characteristics, constraints, and criteria in a clear and unambiguous manner. the second is a solver method based on Satisfiability Modulo theories solver augmented with a lazy theory to handle real-time aspects. this method allows us to synthesize mappings that respect temporal constraints and optimize specific criteria, such as the power consumption of the embedded board.

Designers of embedded real-time systems derive, in general, their time parameters such as activation periods from those of sensors or actuators. By designers, we mean the team in charge of conceiving embedded real-time systems. this team includes Control theory designers and Computer Science designers. Within this paper we present the point of view of Computer Science designers, while the periods proposed by Control theory designers are supposed robust with respect to the physical behavior of the system. the execution times are, then, estimated by studying statically the programs structure or dynamically the programs execution. In some cases, both activation periods and execution times depend on a sensor information. For instance, they depend on the angular speed of wheels within an automotive embedded real-time system and such systems follow a rate-dependent model. Elastic tasks is another model, where one may consider execution time variation depending on the selected period. Within this paper, we are interested in describing statistically the relationship between activation periods and execution times of programs. More precisely, we study the impact of the period variation on the distributions of the execution times. To illustrate our preliminary results, we consider, as case study, the set of programs executing the autopilot of an open-source PX4 drone.

It is critically important for a Battery Management System (BMS) to estimate the State of Charge (SoC) of the batteries [1]. A battery with this feature is protected. By protecting the battery from serious problems and early degradation, it prolongs its life and prevents its degradation over time. In this paper, the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) and Coulomb Counting (CC) methods are implemented to calculate the state of charge. there have been many applications across a variety of fields that have utilized KF as state observer mechanisms. With the help of statistics, a state observer will eventually estimate immeasurable states with high accuracy after observing some real-time output values (measurable states). In the paper, MATLAB model of the SoC for BMS is illustrated. Based on the experimental results, a comparison of KF and CC methods can be made. the results indicate that KF method gives much more accurate results than CC method, as well as the ability to reduce errors very quickly. © 2022 ieee.

the introduction of Unified Memory (UM) technology has greatly increased the programmability of CPU-GPU heterogeneous systems. At the same time, Unified Memory systems have given rise to new performance challenges. Achieving the desired performance and energy efficiency on such systems requires careful consideration of data allocation and migration. this paper looks at the problem of false sharing under UM. We present Raptor, a system for fast and accurate detection of page-level false sharing in heterogeneous applications. the system employs binary code instrumentation and leverages hardware performance counters to track UM allocations and data access patterns and pinpoint energy inefficiencies created by the occurrence of false sharing. Experiments on a suite of heterogeneous applications show false sharing can be a common occurrence in collaborative design paradigms with tight coupling of CPU-GPU tasks. When false sharing is eliminated via a padding scheme, applications are able to achieve higher performance at lower clock frequencies, leading to improved energy efficiency by as much as 2.96× and by 1.62× and 1.47× on average on two contemporary CPU-GPU platforms. © 2022 ieee.

Recently, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been widely used in numerous applications nevertheless in military operations. therefore, there is a crucial need to develop various mechanisms to confront these UAVs. For this reason, the counter system must first determine targets' locations then track them. thus, Accurate target tracking is an important demand in the drone defense system. Because of the significant advancement in computers and software processors, it is now possible to employ these current programs in the operations of positioning and tracking. In this paper, an Open-Source Computer Vision (OpenCV) based drone tracking system is implemented as a tracking system. the performance of the proposed technique is investigated and analyzed through a comparative analysis using a small data set and its ground-truth generated by the annotation tool. the evaluation parameters presented in this study are precision percentage and time analysis. the simulation results present a tradeoff between the accuracy and execution time for the used techniques. © 2022 ieee.

In this paper, we propose an approach to extend the operational time of teams of battery-based robots by introducing a set of charging stations. We assume that the robots are heterogeneous (having different energy limits and being able to service different types of customers) and have access to a priori known map of the environment. the map is modeled as a directed, connected, and finite graph whose nodes are charging stations or customers, and arcs denote the possibility of traveling. To this end, we first formulate a task assignment and path planning problem that aims at optimizing energy consumption as well as the time needed to complete the tasks, including the time spent for recharging. Next, we propose four offline optimization techniques and one online algorithm, where the robots can dynamically adjust their paths in response to the presence of uncertainties imposed by the physical environment. Our proposed algorithms are validated through both simulation and a real-world case study on a team of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) performing a joint search mission.

As virtualization becomes increasingly popular, more critical applications that require real-time performance guarantees are deployed on virtualized systems. In such systems, the Hierarchical real-time Scheduling (HiRTS) framework divides the scheduling problem into task-level scheduling and resource-level scheduling. Specifically, resource-level scheduling divides a physical resource into multiple resource partitions while task-level scheduling schedules the tasks on each resource partition. Accordingly, the Regularity-based Resource Partitioning (RRP) model offers efficient resource-level scheduling. Despite the availability of adequate resource-level tools, the task-level scheduling based on the RRP model still has a scope for improvements. To extend the applicability of the RRP model under a variety of task workload environments, this paper offers: (1) a more practical schedulability test for independent tasks whose key parameters, i.e., Worst-Case Execution time (WCET), period and deadline, are non-integral multiples of a time slice;(2) a tuned Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling approach and a corresponding schedulability test for intra-VM dependent tasks;(3) schedulability tests for self-suspended tasks based on Fixed-Relative-Deadline (FRD) scheduling strategies.

Phase Change Memory (PCM) has emerged as a viable alternative to traditional DRAM memories especially in real-time embedded systems, due to their higher density and lower leakage power dissipation. However, PCM comes with its own drawbacks. Although, the performances of DRAM and PCM are comparable for memory reads, PCM is about three times slower in terms of write latency, and suffers from significantly lower write endurance. the high write latency of PCM may be detrimental to delivered QoS and may lead to deadline misses in real-time systems. To circumvent the problem, this paper proposes a novel memory scheduling scheme which employs separate write request buffer in order to prioritize reads over writes. the read requests are scheduled using an urgency based scheduler where urgency depends on allowable response times of tasks. the write requests are serviced when there are no pending reads using a similar urgency based scheduler as used for read requests. Experimental evaluation using standard benchmarks reveal that the proposed scheme is able to achieve better normalized QoS compared to existing scheduling techniques for PCM and comparable access latencies with respect to DRAM.
