Energy saving is critical to real-time embedded systems. In many embedded systems, some tasks contain conditional instructions or operations that could have different execution times for different inputs. Due to the uncertainties in execution time of these tasks, this paper models each varied execution time as a probabilistic random variable. We propose a practical algorithm to minimize the expected value of total energy consumption while satisfying the timing constraint with a guaranteed confidence probability for uniprocessor embedded systems with continuous probability distributions. the experimental results show that our approach achieves significant energy saving than previous work.

Transactional memory is currently a hot research topic, having attracted the focus of both academic researchers and development groups at companies. Indeed, the concept of transactional memory has recently attracted much interest for multicore systems as it eases programming and avoids the problems of lock-based methods. However, up to now, the scheduling of real-time transactions within software transactional memories has not been studied. To address this issue, we present in this paper a real-time software transactional memory, namely RT-STM. We focus on the scheduling of concurrent soft real-time transactions. In particular, we explore a new heuristic for conflict resolution that reduces the number of deadline violations when scheduling soft real-time transactions. After having discussed the scalability of various classical STMs under a real-time operating system, we present experimental results that show that RT-STM can improve the performance of transactional memory-based applications on multicore platforms.

FlexRay is an automotive communication protocol that combines the comprehensive time-triggered paradigm with an adaptive phase that is more suitable for event-based communication. We study optimization of average response times by assigning priorities and frame identifiers to tasks and messages. Our optimization approach is based on immune genetic algorithms, where in addition to the crossover and mutation operators, we use a vaccination operator that results in considerable improvements in optimization time and quality.

Programming microcontrollers is a different paradigm from microprocessor programming. the traditional way to program microcontrollers is to write the program in C or an assembly language, but modern embedded systems are more complex. the Priority-based Functional Reactive Programming (P-FRP) paradigm could make microcontroller programming better. P-FRP makes it possible to treat programs as functions (stateless) and amenable to proofs and type-safety. In this paper, we focus on the abort-and-restart event handler semantics of P-FRP, which is neither a concurrency control policy nor a true scheduling policy. Instead, it is a policy in which the most important task is scheduled first. this paper refines the response time analysis for the abort-and-restart model on single-core systems.

Energy-aware real-time multiprocessor scheduling has been studied extensively so far. However, some of the constraints associated with the practical DVS applications have been ignored for simplicity. these constraints include discrete speed, idle power, inefficient speed, and application-specific power characteristics etc. this work targets energy-aware scheduling of periodic real-time tasks on the DVS-equipped multiprocessor systems with practical constraints. An adaptive minimal bound first-fit (AMBFF) algorithm with consideration of these realistic constraints is proposed for both dynamic-priority and fixed-priority multiprocessor scheduling. Simulation results on three commercial processor models show that our algorithm can save significantly more energy than existing algorithms.

Responsive Link, an ISO/IEC communication standard, provides many functional capabilities for distributed real-time systems. this paper is focused on periodic and aperiodic communication techniques for Responsive Link. In periodic communication, the priority is assigned to each packet so that the network utilization is improved. A schedulability test for connection establishments is also derived to ensure timing guarantees. In aperiodic communication, meanwhile, the bandwidth is reserved to improve response time as much as possible without periodic timing violations. the effectiveness of the presented techniques is demonstrated through a series of simulations.

Static WCET analysis is a process dedicated to derive a safe upper bound of the worst-case execution time of a program. In many real-time systems, however, a constant global WCET estimate is not always so useful since a program may behave very differently depending on its configuration or mode. A parametric WCET analysis derives the upper bound as formula rather than a constant. this paper presents a new efficient algorithm that can obtain a safe parametric estimate of the WCET of a program. this algorithm is evaluated on a large set of benchmarks and compared to a previous approach to parametric WCET calculation. the evaluation shows that the new algorithm, to the cost of some imprecision, scales much better and can handle more realistic programs than the previous approach.

Although component middleware is increasingly used to develop distributed, real-time and embedded (DRE) systems, it poses new fault tolerance challenges, such as the need for efficient synchronization of internal component state, failure correlation across groups of components, and configuration of fault-tolerance properties at the component granularity level. this paper makes two contributions to R&D on component-based fault-tolerance. First, we present the structure and functionality of our Component Replication based on Failover Units (CORFU) middleware, which provides fail-stop behavior and fault correlation across groups of components in DRE systems. Second, we empirically evaluate CORFU and compare/contrast it with existing object-oriented fault-tolerance methods. Our results show that component middleware (1) has acceptable fault-tolerance performance for DRE systems and (2) eases the burden of application development by providing middleware support for fault-tolerance at the component level.

Allocating software components and messages to computing devices and their interconnecting networks is a great challenge in vehicle control system development. the allocation decisions are usually made at an early development stage without the implementation details of the computing platform. To produce low-cost products with correct vehicle control, the software allocation must facilitate the final system scheduling with better resource utilization and the presence of platform implementation uncertainties. In this paper, we present an allocation method to improve the resource utilization and scheduling while keeping the decisions independent of delayed platform implementation. Our method determines the allocation using a genetic algorithm with an optimization function combining the peak usage request and the usage request density to minimize the potential contentions on shared resources. the preliminary evaluation using the representative synthetic systems has shown the effectiveness and applicability of the method.

Most of the previous studies on real-time systems focus on the satisfaction of completion-time constraints of jobs. A lot of them consider pure deadline, where the real-time jobs should be completed before their respective deadline. Some others consider time/utility functions for their jobs, which specifies the benefit that a job can accrue according to its exact completion time. However, we propose a different type of timing constraints for real-time jobs called Instant Value Function (TVF). According to IVF, the exact instant where a job is executed affects the value that the job can accrue. therefore, the IVF specifies that which instants are the most appropriate ones to execute the job. this type of timing constraints can express the behavior of specific applications in a more precise manner. Furthermore, we have presented a scheduling algorithm that tries to maximize the accrued value of real-time systems with IVF-constrained jobs. the experimental results show that the proposed method considerably outperforms EDF.
