In this paper we address the problem of dynamic memory management in real-time Java embedded systems. Our work aims at suppressing the need for garbage collection in order to avoid unpredictable pause times. For that we use a simple static analysis algorithm coupled with region-based memory management as presented in [15]. To overcome the well-known limitations of region inference, we propose in this paper to involve the developer in the analysis process by providing feedback on programming constructs likely to produce memory leaks. Experiments show that for most programming patterns, our system behaves as efficiently as a garbage collector in terms of memory consumption. Our analysis tool is furthermore able to provide useful feedback to the programmer to pinpoint problematic constructs.

the paper presents a time-triggered distributed object computing environment for embedded control systems such as automotive control systems. the time-triggered architecture is suitable for hard real-time systems. We present a time-triggered distributed object model as an extension to the time-triggered object model that consists of objects periodically updating their own attribute values. the model is suitable for embedded control systems in which the control logics are designed with control block diagrams. Replica objects are used for efficient location transparency in the model and inter-object communications are local method calls, not remote method invocations. We have developed a distributed computing environment based on the time- triggered distributed object model. the middleware maintains the replicas to be consistent with the original objects using periodic state messages. the middleware executes the replication processing with the stubs that bridge the original objects, the middleware, and the replicas. We have also developed a development environment for embedded control application programs based on the time-triggered distributed object model. the stubs are generated from the interface definitions written in CORBA-compliant IDL.

In this paper, we present the experiments with robots in a wireless sensor network environment to support intelligent generation of group behaviors. We propose real-time software architecture in a wireless sensor network (WSN) environment for practical applications. the architecture is a layered architecture including decision making, knowledge processing, execution, and communication and sensor/actuator layers. the proposed architecture is tested for the multi-robot environment, where the robots are expected to exhibit group behaviors. the rules are written in CLIPS expert system tool to perform intelligent behavior generation and dynamic reasoning so as to make the behaviors more realistic.

MB++ is a system that caters to the dynamic needs of applications in a distributed, pervasive computing environment that has a wide variety of devices that act as producers and consumers of stream data. the architecture encompasses several elements: the type server allows clients to dynamically inject transformation code that operates on data streams. the transformation engine executes dataflow graphs of transformations on high-performance computing resources. the stream server manages all data streams in the system and dispatches new dataflow graphs to the transformation engine. We have implemented the architecture and show performance results that demonstrate that our implementation scales well with increasing workload, commensurate with the available HPC resources. Further, we show that our implementation can exploit opportunities for parallelism in dataflow graphs, as well as efficiently sharing common subgraphs between dataflow graphs.

We present a contract-based technique to achieve reuse of known worst-case execution times (WCET) in conjunction with reuse of software components. For resource constrained systems, or systems where high degree of predictability is needed, classical techniques for WCET- estimation will result in unacceptable overestimation of the execution-time of reusable software components with rich behavior. Our technique allows different WCETs to be associated with subsets of the component behavior. the appropriate WCET for any usage context of the component is selected be means of component contracts over the input domain. In a case-study we illustrate our technique and demonstrate its potential in achieving tight WCET- estimates for reusable components with rich behavior.

real-time scheduling algorithms for multiprocessor systems have been the subject of considerable recent interest. For such an algorithm to be truly useful in practice, support for semaphore-based locking must be provided. However, for many global scheduling algorithms, no such mechanisms have been proposed. Furthermore, in the partitioned case, most prior semaphore schemes are either inefficient or restrict critical sections considerably. In this paper, a new flexible multiprocessor locking scheme is presented that can be applied under both partitioning and global scheduling. this scheme allows unrestricted critical-section nesting, but has been designed to deal with the common case of short non-nested accesses efficiently.

this paper attempts to analyze the boot-up time of bootloader and Linux kernel, and to compare performance of several root file-systems for fast boot-up time in the embedded Linux. therefore, it was implemented with time measurement module to analyze the boot-up time of bootloader and Linux kernel, and measured the time at each event point related to boot-up. As a result of analysis of six cases packaging, it has turned out the fact that the data checksum routine, decompressing the kernel and ramdisk image takes most of the boot-up time. Root file-system was packaged through analyzing such performance as boot-up time, memory usage, file-system size. this is based on raw-kernel image and a combination of CRAMFS and JFFS2, and it has small size of the root file-system, the boot-up time is decreased.

Feasibility analysis algorithms are based on particular metrics such as processor utilization, load factor, processor demand, response-times, etc. the design of efficient algorithms for computing these metrics is a major issue in real-time scheduling theory. In this paper we propose two FPTASs (fully-polynomial time approximation schemes) for checking feasibility of static-priority tasks subjected to release jitters executed upon a uniprocessor platform. We then use these FPTASs for computing two upper bounds of worst-case response-times. Lastly, we show that these bounds do not achieve constant error bounds in comparison with values computed by an exact worst-case response-time analysis (performed in pseudo-polynomial time), and we present numerical experiments.

Smart card platforms are migrating from restrictive proprietary environments to open multi-application infrastructures. computing the worst case execution time of an embedded application while there is no way to make previous assumptions on the CPU configuration available on the smart card had to be faced differently. In this paper, an evaluation of a distributed WCET computation method is presented. A low-level analysis on an ARM7TDMI CPU core is also described. We explain how the global WCET of a dynamically loaded application is extracted. Experimental results show a small overestimation compared to the observed execution time for a PIN-based authentication applet. Hardware-dependent WCET computation can also take advantage of the typing information related to the intermediate language. Improvement in the performance evaluation is up to 81,22%.

In this paper, we propose a novel fault-tolerant technique, which is seamlessly integrated with fixed-priority-based scheduling algorithm to explore redundancies to enhance schedulability in fault-tolerant and real-time distributed systems. Our fault-tolerant technique makes use of the primary-backup scheme to tolerate permanent hardware failures. Most importantly, the proposed technique (referred to as Tercos) terminates the execution of active backup copies when corresponding primary copies are successfully completed, therefore Tercos can reduce scheduling lengths in fault-free scenario to enhance schedulability by virtue of executing portions of active backup copies in passive forms. Experimental results show that compared with existing algorithm in literature, Tercos can significantly improve schedulability by up to 17.0%(with an average of 9.7%).
