Doubling the number of processing cores on a single processor chip with each technology generation has become conventional wisdom. While future manycore processors promise to offer much increased computational throughput under a given power envelope, sharing critical on-chip resources, such as caches and core- to-core interconnects, poses challenges to guaranteeing predictable performance to an application program. this paper focuses on the problem of sharing on-chip caching capacity among multiple programs scheduled together, especially at the L2 cache level. Specifically, two design aspects of a large shared L2 cache are considered: (1) non-uniform cache access latency and (2) cache contention. We observe that both the aspects have to do with where, among many cache slices, a cache block is mapped to, and present an OS-based approach to managing the on-chip L2 cache memory by carefully mapping data to a cache at the page granularity. We show that a reasonable extension to the OS memory management subsystem and simple architectural support enable enforcing high-level policies to achieve application performance isolation and improve program performance predictability thereof.

We propose virtual full replication by adaptive segmentation (ViFuR-A), and evaluate its ability to maintain scalability in a replicated real-time database. With full replication and eventual consistency, transaction timeliness becomes independent of network delays for all transactions. However, full replication does not scale well, since all updates must be replicated to all nodes, also when data is needed only at a subset of the nodes. With virtual full replication that adapts to actual data needs, resource usage can be bounded and the database can be made scalable. We propose a scheme for adaptive segmentation that detects new data needs and adapts replication. the scheme includes an architecture, a scalable protocol and a replicated directory service that together maintains scalability. We show that adaptive segmentation bounds the required storage at a significantly lower level compared to static segmentation, for a typical workload where the data needs change repeatedly. Adaptation time can be kept constant for the workload when there are sufficient resources. Also, the storage is constant with an increasing amount of nodes and linear with an increasing rate of change to data needs.

Data being used in real-time systems must be up-to-date to produce correct results. the use of outdated data can have catastrophic consequences since calculated control signals are based on stale data. Two distinct methods to update data exist: (i) dedicated tasks (DT) update data items, and (ii) on-demand (OD) updating being a conditioned part of the execution flow of tasks. On-demand updating has not been studied in terms of CPU utilization analysis for real-time systems. this paper studies on-demand updating in terms of (i) imposed workload and compares the workload to deferrable scheduling (DS), and (ii) analytical formula for estimating workload to be used in CPU utilization based schedulability tests. It is found that on-demand updating uses less workload for updates compared to DS, which suggests on-demand updating should be used for resource constrained systems. However, using on-demand updating makes the execution times of updates unpredictable, which currently gives two possibilities (i) be pessimistic and assume all updates always execute or (ii) be less pessimistic but estimate the times between executions of updates. this paper devises a formula for such estimates and compares their result to approach (i). Evaluations show the formula can be useful for soft real-time systems.

In this paper, a physical activities healthcare system (PAthS) combined ubiquitous computing and wireless sensing technology was proposed. this system includes a wearable wireless sensors unit (W2SU), a hand-held device and related analysis and wireless communication software. W2SU can record physical activities and ambulatory electrocardiogram. All data recorded by the unit can be transmitted to the hand-held device using Bluetooth in order that the software in hand-held device will monitor the entire exercises process and check the heart rate. Furthermore, the hand-held device can access Internet via Wi-Fi for telemedicine functions. the purposes of our system are to help subjects to develop individuated suitable physical activity plans and monitor the cardiac status continually. PAthS can also be used as an alert device to help person when abnormal rhythms is detected. the prototype system has been tested and it is found to fulfill the anticipated requirement. the proposed system provides an effective solution for construction of a large scale healthcare and telemedicine system.

One of the most serious constraints of an embedded system is its limited memory, which requires small code size for embedded software. One popular method to reduce the code size is reducing the instruction encoding, such as the ARM thUMB or the MIPS-16 architectures. they employ shorter instructions by reducing the field width, including those of register operands. this obviously reduces the number of registers available for register allocation than in the original architecture, which can lead to more register spills, negatively affecting the code size. this paper proposes a simple architectural upgrade by reconstructing the original register file into register banks and by providing a bank change instruction. this can allow all of the original registers to be available for register allocation when the bank change instructions are added appropriately. For such a banked register file, we propose an efficient, region-based register bank allocation technique where appropriate regions are chosen first for bank changes, followed by conventional global register allocation. As a case study, we apply the idea to the ARM thUMB architecture and evaluate how the upgrade affects its overall code size. We found that the upgrade results in an average of 5.0% code size reduction for some of MiBench and MediaBench benchmarks, compared to the original thUMB code.

A lot of real-time database (RTDB) research has been done to process transactions in a timely fashion using fresh data reflecting the current real world status. However, most existing RTDB work is based on simulations. Due to the absence of a publicly available RTDB testbed, it is very hard to evaluate real-time data management techniques in a realistic environment. To address the problem, we design and develop an initial version of a RTDB testbed, called Chronos, atop an open source database. We develop soft real-time database workloads that model online stock trades, providing several knobs to specify workloads for RTDB performance evaluation. In addition, we develop a QoS management scheme in Chronos to detect overload and reduce workloads, via admission control and adaptive temporal data updates, under overload. From the extensive experiments using the stock trading workloads developed in Chronos, we observe that adaptive updates can considerably improve the transaction timeliness. We also observe that admission control can only enhance the timeliness under severe overload, possibly causing underutilization problems for moderate workloads. Overall, we observe several results different from simulation-based work, warranting the need for RTDB performance evaluation in a real database system.

A task that suspends itself to wait for an I/O completion or to wait for an event from another node in distributed environments is called an I/O blocking task. In conventional hard real-time scheduling theories, there exist several approaches to schedule such I/O blocking tasks within the conventional framework of rate monotonic analysis (RMA). However, most of them are pessimistic. In this paper, we propose effective algorithms that can schedule a task set which includes I/O blocking tasks under dynamic priority assignment. We present a new critical instant theorem for multi-frame task set under dynamic priority assignment. the schedulability is analyzed under the new critical instant theorem. For the schedulability analysis , this paper presents saturation summation which is used to calculate maximum interference function (MIF). With the saturation summation, the schedulability of a task set including I/O blocking tasks can be analyzed more accurately. We propose an algorithm which is based on a frame laxity monotonic scheduling (FLMS). Genetic algorithm is also applied. From our experiments, we can conclude that the FLMS can significantly reduce the time of the calculation time, and GA can improve task schedulability ratio than the FLMS.

Software synthesis from a data-flow model has been a very promising technique, especially for multimedia applications with contradicting requirements of high design complexity and fast time-to-market. In a dataflow model, buffer size is pessimistically determined through static analysis, thus results in large memory overhead even with optimization techniques such as buffer sharing and scheduling. So, reducing buffer size is one of the key issues of data-flow models. In this work, we propose a novel software synthesis technique to reduce buffer size through control-flow decomposition. We first traverse the control-flow within each actor of a data-flow graph and decompose it into a set of multiple execution paths. then we transform the actor such that only one of the paths is executed at one invocation of the actor. the new actor may have to be invoked many times to complete the behavior of the original actor. By proper decomposition, we can make the new actor consume/produce much smaller amount of input/output data for each invocation, thereby reducing the input/output buffer size drastically. We automate the process of transformation and show the efficiency of the proposed approach through experiments with image/video multimedia applications.

this paper evaluates the performance of TriBA - a new idea in multiprocessor architectures. TriBA is considered to be a high performance, scalable parallel computing architecture, therefore, its performance is evaluated by well-known scalability metrics speed-up and efficiency. the root of "triplet based architecture" is based on the concept that "Complex problems can be decomposed to three relatively independent sub-problems, which are data Processing, data Management and data Communication". TriBA consists of a 2D grid of small, programmable processing units, each physically connected to its three neighbors. TriBA is a real scalable architecture, featuring fractal nature for computers. TriBA is a new solution for computer architecture, which is suitable for sophisticated embedded applications with multiple concurrent processing centers. the characteristics of this architecture are its great modularity, flexibility and scalability to meet the real-time signal processing demands in future telecommunication and multimedia systems. the feasibility, effectiveness and performance of TriBA is illustrated using execution model and simulations comparing it with conventional 2D mesh architecture. © 2007 ieee.

Marte (A UML Profile for Modeling and Analysis of real-time and embedded systems) is a new UML profile extension for real-time and embedded systems, which is going to be standardized by mid 2007 at OMG (Object Management Group). this standard has been proposed by the "ProMarte" consortium, which consists of OMG end-users, tool providers and academics. Marte defines concepts in terms of UML extensions needed to model and analyze real-time and embedded systems (RT/ES). the Marte specification provides an annex which handles its relation to AADL-based models, and the way it may represent them. Our purpose in this paper is to describe this relation. Our constructions will be presented and illustrated through some examples.
