the number of computer-controlled functions in an automobile is increasing at a rapid rate and so is the number of microprocessors implementing and controlling these functionalities. therefore, there is a need to minimize the computing power provided without affecting the performance and safety of the applications. the latter is especially important since intelligent automotive applications deal with critical data and involve deadline bound computations on data gathered from the automobiles' environment. these applications have stringent requirements on the freshness of data items and completion time of the tasks. Our work studies one such safety-critical application, namely adaptive cruise control (ACC). We take a task+data centric approach for designing and implementing this application. As our contributions we have (i) identified the data and task characteristics of ACC and shown how to map them on a real-world (robotic) platform, (ii) facilitated a real-time approach towards designing ACC by the application of mode-change and real-time data repository concepts for reducing CPU capacity requirements and (iii) provided the scheduling strategies to meet the timing requirements of the tasks. Experiments demonstrate that the CPU capacity requirement can be reduced without compromising the real-time guarantees for safety-critical applications

A power-aware optimal processor cycle allocation scheme with consideration of fair quality of service (QoS) guarantee in real-time systems is formulated. Although power-aware resource management using dynamic voltage and frequency scaling techniques can be used to resolve the trade-off between QoS maximization and energy consumption minimization, it is also necessary to ensure fair QoS allocation in real-time resource allocation to avoid deterioration of QoS levels. the formulation presented in this paper is a multiple-objective optimization problem in which the objective functions are minimization of total enemy consumption and maximization of the QoS level. A Pareto optimal solution representing the trade-off between the two objective functions is obtained numerically using a weighted-sum method for the case that the resource consumption functions are convex. We show an example in cast that all resource consumption functions are linear

Consider the problem of scheduling sporadic message transmission requests with deadlines. For wired channels, this has been achieved successfully using the CAN bus. For wireless channels, researchers have recently proposed a similar solution; a collision-free medium access control (MAC) protocol that implements static-priority scheduling. Unfortunately no implementation has been reported, yet. We implement and evaluate it to find that the implementation indeed is collision-free and prioritized. this allows us to develop schedulability analysis for the implementation. We measure the response times of messages in our implementation and find that our new response-time analysis indeed offers an upper bound on the response times. this enables a new class of wireless real-time systems with timeliness guarantees for sporadic messages and it opens-up a new research area: schedulability analysis for wireless networks

the quality of service (QoS) of enterprise distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems can degrade under certain operating conditions and system architectures. this paper provides two contributions to research on model-driven development (MDD) tools and methods that help identify and rectify these QoS problems in component-based enterprise DRE systems. First, we show how MDD tools can be used to simplify and automate the evaluation of component-based DRE systems to identify QoS problems. Second, we show how MDD tools can be used to specify alternative QoS polices for component-based DRE systems and synthesize metadata automatically to simplify system (re)configurations that rectify QoS problems. We illustrate our MDD tools on a case study of multi-layer resource management services for shipboard computing systems that automate many aspects of power, navigation, command and control, and tactical operations

As the increasing of system performance and computing power, embedded systems are more complicated and interactive. therefore, operating system (OS) plays a more important role in embedded systems to utilize various hardware and software resources. However, no OS can meet all requirements of various embedded systems. Due to the advance of reconfigurable processors, system requirements can be more dynamic. embedded OS has becoming more critical in the development of embedded systems and thus there is a strong need of configurable embedded OS to better and faster build up the target system. In this paper, we propose a configurable OS, called COS, based on SOA (service-oriented architecture) for embedded SoC (system on a chip) systems to build an application specific OS according to the system requirements. COS can be easily configured to better utilize the resources of the target embedded platform and have better support to the embedded application. Moreover, the COS can easily extend new features or functionalities of other OSes and even be adapted to the designs of other OSes. We implement COS on an ARM platform to prove its configurability and also evaluate its overhead. We believe that COS can be configured to meet the various requirements in embedded SoC systems and help to speed up the embedded system development process

the load parameter of a sporadic task system is defined to be the largest possible cumulative execution requirement that can be generated by jobs of the task system over any time interval, normalized by the length of the interval. this parameter is known to play a very important role in the uniprocessor feasibility analysis of sporadic task systems. In this paper, it is shown that the load of a sporadic task system may be used as an accurate indicator of its feasibility upon preemptive multiprocessors as well. Exact algorithms, and approximate ones that can be guaranteed to be accurate to within an arbitrary additive error > 0, for computing a task system's load are presented and proven correct. the performance of these algorithms is evaluated by simulation over randomly generated task systems

Securing communication sessions between networked embedded systems is a major challenge that needs to be addressed as an increasing number of such systems become Internet-enabled. Securely and quickly establishing a session key between communicating nodes in a network requires authentication of node identities. In this paper, we propose a simple elliptic-curve based key negotiation protocol suitable for fully hardware implementation as a protocol on chip (PoC). the protocol uses the elliptic curve variants of both the Diffie Hellmann exchange and the digital signature algorithm. Timing results demonstrate that an end-to-end protocol run can be performed in as little as 28ms on a 25MHz clock, which is several times faster than previous microprocessor-based implementations of similar protocols. the results indicate that session keys can thereby have shorter lifetimes, since there is little computational overhead in re-generating them, thus enhancing overall security of the networked embedded systems

In this paper we address the "rate analysis" problem for media-processing platforms consisting of multiple processor cores connected in a pipelined fashion. More precisely, we aim at determining fight bounds on the rates at which multimedia streams can be fed into such architectures. these bounds depend on architectural constraints (e.g. the available on-chip memory, bus arbitration policies, etc), as well as the application characteristics (e.g. application partitioning and mapping, workload rates generated by different tasks, etch the proposed framework for rate analysis can be used for fast design space exploration to determine how these bounds change with different architectural parameters, mapping of the application, or changing the QoS requirements associated with the input streams

A QoS adaptation to dynamically changing system conditions that takes into consideration the user's constraints on the stability of service provisioning is presented. the goal is to allow the system to make QoS adaptation decisions in response to fluctuations in task traffic flow, under the control of the user. We pay special attention to the case where monitoring the stability period and resource load variation of service level agreements for different types of services is used to dynamically adapt future stability periods, according to a feedback control scheme. System's adaptation behaviour can be configured according to a desired confidence level on future resource usage. the viability of the proposed approach is validated by preliminary experiments

In this paper we consider data freshness and overload handling in embedded systems. the requirements on data management and overload handling are derived from an engine control software. Data items need to be up-to-date, and to achieve this data dependencies must be considered, i.e., updating a data item requires other data items are up-to-date. We also note that a correct result of a calculation can in some cases be calculated using a subset of the inputs. Hence, data dependencies can be divided into required and not required data items, e.g., only a subset of data items affecting the fuel calculation in an engine control needs to be calculated during a transient overload in order to reduce the number of calculations. Required data items must always be up-to-date, whereas not required data items can be stale. We describe an algorithm that dynamically determines which data items need to be updated taking workload, data freshness, and data relationships into consideration. Performance results show that the algorithm suppresses transient overloads better than (m, k)- and skip-over scheduling combined with established algorithms to update data items. the performance results are collected from an implementation of a real-time database on the realtime operating system muC/OS-II. To investigate whether the system is occasionally overloaded an offline analysis algorithm estimating period times of updates is presented
