Context-aware mobile computing middleware is designed to automatically adapt its behavior to changing environment. To achieve this, an important issue to be addressed is how to effectively select services for adaptation according to the user's current context. Existing work does not adequately address this issue. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy-based service adaptation model (FSAM) that can be used in context-aware middleware. We formulate the service adaptation process by using fuzzy linguistic variables and membership degrees to define the context situations and the rules for adopting the policies of implementing a service. We propose three fitness functions to calculate the fitness degree for each policy based on the distance of fuzzy status between the policy and the current context situation. the decision for service adaptation is achieved by selecting the policy with the largest fitness degree. A context-aware application scenario called Campus Assistant is used to exemplify the proposed service adaptation process and demonstrate its effectiveness.

We propose a new architecture for a content protection system that conceals confidential data and algorithms in an FPGA as electrical circuits. this architecture is designed for a client-server type on-line contents distribution services. the key component of this architecture is the digital content security circuit that is dynamically configured on the FPGA and performs the signal processing such as certification and decryption for replaying digital contents. the digital content security circuit is composed of two different circuits. One is the content-specific circuit that is built from the configuration data generated by the server. this circuit is specialized for each item of digital content. the other is the terminal built-in circuit that is uniquely programmed and implemented for each terminal, and is not open for the others. the content-specific circuit properly works only if it is combined with the terminal built-in circuit of the authorized client. We prototype and demonstrate a proof-of-concept model of the FPGA-based content protection system applicable to embedded consumer electronics such as set top boxes and cell phones.

For the success of an SoC design, a design platform and some key design technologies are needed. For this purpose, a research project in "Technology Development Program for Academia" was granted recently in Taiwan to develop the following technologies toward a high-performance low-power SoC design platform. First, a soft intellectual property (soft IP) and related RTOS, compiler, and integrated design environment (IDE) software of an Advanced Taiwan VLTW DSP Processor Core, which can be used as the Star IP of an SoC design platform, will be developed. Second, low-power and low-voltage digital and mixed-signal circuit design technologies will be developed based on the advanced MTCMOS process. third, some key multimedia and communication soft or hard IPs will be developed. the developed advanced key technologies can be used as the technology driver to facilitate the design of SoC-based products, and they will also help to enhance the design capability of the Taiwan SoC industry. In this paper, we introduce the research project and focus on architecture and software technologies developing in one of the subitems.

In March 2004, recognizing the importance of sensor networks, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology launched a joint effort to investigate both fundamental and practical research issues in sensor networks. the goal of this research is to build lightweight optimized sensor systems on a massive scale, namely the BLOSSOMS project. the objective of this research project is to identify research issues at all levels from practical applications down to the design of sensor nodes. this paper reports the status of the project as of April 2005. First, other than making MOTE-compatible sensor nodes, this project has studied the hardware and software co-design and the associated "sensor node on a chip" technology with the aim to make sensor nodes small in size, light in weight, cheap in cost, and low in power consumption. Second, additional toolkits for simulation/emulation and evaluation of sensor networks have been developed to support research at different levels. third, a number of applications have been investigated and implemented since the launch of this project, and this paper will address two of them. One is an embedded remote health care system based on wireless sensor network technologies to introduce a scalable wireless personal medical network around human's body. the other is a moving object counting system based on an ultrasonic sensor network, which can be used but not limited to crowd estimation and traffic monitoring and coordination.

this paper analyzes and applies scalable encryption methods to secure live video transmission in coherence with development of the multiple video streaming and compression (multiple-VSCS) software, as applied for the intelligent traffic management system. Motion images are captured, jointly compressed, encrypted and streamed real time via utilization of the 5.8 GHz OFDM outdoor wireless LAN network. theoretical comparisons are made with current and previous encryption standards to ascertain the appropriate encryption solution. the selected standard is then developed and embedded into the H.263 video compression standard with different configurations at the DCT process to analyze the behavior of the encrypted stream rates with respect to quality of the scrambled images. the behavior is based on the amount of DCT coefficients subjected to encryption process with differences in the bit rates averaging between 40% and 90% under these conditions.

the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the National Taiwan University has identified the area of content science for media-rich life, broadly construed, as one of core areas for the college's future directions. One major aspect of this project is to develop the enabling technology for reconfigurable platforms for multimedia applications. Specifically, the goal is to develop reconfigurable platforms of system-on-a-chip (SoC) components for the applications to support the needs of multi-modal multimedia contents and to provide rapid system prototyping. the faculties in the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science have formed a multi-discipline team to develop such technology. Our team includes seven faculties and more than thirty students from the college. this short report describes the reconfigurable platform for content science research activities currently underway by our team. Our current activities include to develop the technology to analyze the critical path for avoiding hardware contention, to minimize the use of logic components, to design the multimedia IPs, to optimally route the bus and place the logic units, to design energy efficient cache, to evaluate the performance and power consumption, to design the algorithm for temporal floor-planning/placement.

In this paper, we present an embedded system design which is cost-efficient and which considers performance improvement and power consumption based on the frequency with which instructions are executed. We use the locality of running programs to optimize the use of memory space, system performance, and power consumption; that is, we compress infrequently executed codes to save the use of memory space but compress (encode) frequently executed codes to power consumption and maximize performance. To save the number of memory access times, the frequently executed instructions are encoded as shorter code words and then the continuous code words are packed into a pseudo instruction. Once the decompression engine fetches one pseudo instruction, it can extract multiple instructions to reduce the number of memory access times. In addition, we also propose a design with multiple look-ahead tables that solves the problem which arises due to the reduction in instructions from one-time memory access which occurs because the great amount of frequently executed instructions. From our simulation results, our method with one 256-instruction look-ahead table does not increase the compression ratio, and the ratio of the power consumption can be reduced by about 47.23% than compressing all instructions. With regard to multiple look-ahead table methods, when one 512-instruction look-ahead table is used, the ratio of the power consumption is reduced by 37.25% only, however, when two look-ahead tables that contain 256 instructions in each table are used, the power consumption can be improved by 49.36%. According to the simulation results, our proposed methods based on the frequencies of executed instructions result in low power consumption, performance improvement and reduced memory space.

Popular network simulation tools, such as ns-2, are useful for undertaking experiments with emerging networking technologies. As networked applications become distributed at scales comparable to the Internet, such as peer-to-peer applications, testing and experimentation becomes increasingly difficult and important. With this paper, we are introducing an elaborate extension to existing simulation capabilities by allowing realistic highly distributed application prototypes to be attached to a simulator for transparent testing and experimentation. We enable developers to focus on building their applications rather than detailing simulation scripts. Testing can then be performed in a natural setting. PDNS is a parallel and distributed version of the commonly used ns-2 simulation package. We describe our extensions to the PDNS simulator which allow real application prototypes to be run across a simulated network. We describe our use of virtualisation as a means for sending an application's network traffic through the simulator. Our implementation allows for large scale simulations with thousands of real peers and hundreds of thousands of simulated nodes in a network, thus we can test real peer-to-peer software at large scales.

the ieee 802.16 broadband wireless access system (BWA) offers the advantage of fast deployment and cost-effective solution to the last-mile wireless connection problem. For mass adoption and large scale deployment of BWA system, it must support quality of service (QoS) for real-time and high bandwidth applications. the ieee 802.16 standard defines the QoS signaling framework and various types of service flows, but the actual QoS mechanisms such as packet scheduling algorithms for these service flows are unspecified in the standard. We evaluate the performance of the various packet scheduling algorithms and also propose an efficient scheduling algorithm based on the transmission opportunity given to each station to support QoS in ieee 802.16 standard. We show that the proposed scheduler provides improved performance in terms of mean delay and average system throughput compared to the other scheduling schemes through extensive simulations.
