We describe an embedded vision system, which integrates a web-cam quality CMOS imaging chip with a RISC processor, to perform real-time car-counting functions in the indoor and outdoor environment. the challenge of this application, especially for the outdoor environment, is to develop vision algorithms for day and night, and during the light-transition periods (i.e., dawn and dusk). the vision system also needs to accommodate a tremendous range of illumination change (from sunny summer to snowy winter). Finally we report briefly the result of an outdoor system we deployed in Germany since June 2003. the entire system consists of a network of 13 embedded vision systems covering a parking facility over 1 square kilometer. the vision-network has been in daily use for the employee parking guidance.

Bandwidth management is very important to quality of service of network applications. Communications and data transmissions between hosts in a LAN environment may be large in many systems, such as clustering systems and parallel systems. If the network bandwidth is not enough, real-time packets may be delayed and miss their timing constraints. there are many technologies developed to increase host bandwidth in a LAN environment, but most of them need switching hubs with special support such as ieee Link Aggregation Standard and are very expensive. In this paper, we propose a real-time message channel, BondingPlus, in Linux Ethernet environment which can make use of multiple Ethernet adapters simultaneously between hosts connected with regular switching hubs. When receiving packets from upper network layer, BondingPlus schedules packets in data link layer. real-time packets can be dispatched into a higher-priority queue so that the packets can be transmitted through the physical Ethernet interface right away. Furthermore, real-time applications can transmit real-time packets via one or several dedicated network adapters which create real-time message channels between hosts and thus reduce transmission delay and jitter dramatically, especially suitable for applications that have high bandwidth and real-time requirements. this approach is implemented in two Linux kernel modules and is backward compatible, flexible and transparent to users. BondingPlus pseudo Ethernet device driver module receives packets from upper network layer and dispatches the packets to multiple physical network adapters with a single IP address. ARP+ protocol module is responsible for maintaining a table of the mapping between an IP address and its corresponding MAC addresses of multiple physical network adapters. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

A methodology is proposed to transform the power consumption problem for flash memory storage of a hard real-time embedded system into an imprecise computation model. Also, based on imprecise computation models, two scheduling algorithms have been developed to minimize the total power consumptions of the online service requests (i.e., tasks) for a flash memory of a hard real-time embedded system. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first idea to solve the power consumption problem of a hard real-time embedded system using imprecise computation models.

RapidIO is an emerging standard for switched interconnection of processors and boards in embedded systems. We use discrete-event simulation to evaluate and prototype RapidIO-based systems with respect to their performance in an environment targeted towards space-based radar applications. this application class makes an ideal test case for a RapidIO feasibility study due to high system throughput requirements and real-time processing constraints. Our results show that a baseline RapidIO system is well suited to space-based radar, providing significant improvements over typical bus-based architectures. Our results also show that extensions to the RapidIO protocol such as cut-through routing and transmitter-controlled flow-control would provide minimal performance improvements for the applications under study.

Although in recent years many excellent works have been done on resolving the routing problem in ad hoc networking systems, the energy issue in route maintenance has been greatly ignored. Due to movement of mobile hosts, the energy consumption rate of a route may change with time. In this paper, we propose the distance-based route maintenance (DBRM) scheme in which a handoff mechanism is designed for switching the nodes in route maintenance to minimize the energy consumption rate. In addition, in DBRM, mobile hosts in a group may switch between different states of operations to conserve energy. In the simulation experiments, we have shown that the amount of energy conserved from using DBRM is significantly larger than both the ieee standard 802.11 with fixed listen interval, and the power management scheme using GAF with random listen interval. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

the NEESgrid project is revolutionizing the way earthquake engineering (EE) researchers collaborate to plan, perform, share and publish research even while being geographically separated. the proposed demonstration is in complement to the NEESgrid paper titled "Distributed Hybrid Earthquake Engineering Experiments: Experiences with a Ground-Shaking Grid Application" also presented at this conference. It showcases some of NEESgrid"s features and capabilities in the area of distributed hybrid experiments, as well as new features developed since the distributed hybrid experiment was conducted. these new features and capabilities are in the areas of simulation portal, electronic notebook, data modeling, and improved live streaming of near real time sensor and video data.

We describe the design of a modular system for untethered real-time kinematic motion capture using sensors with inertial measuring units (IMU). Our system is comprised of a set of small and lightweight sensors. Each sensor provides its own global orientation (3 degrees of freedom) and is physically and computationally independent, requiring only external communication. Orientation information from sensors is communicated via wireless to host computer for processing. We present results of the real-time usage of our untethered motion capture system for teleoperating the NASA Robonaut. We also discuss potential applications for untethered motion capture with respect to humanoid robotics.

Clusters of workstations are being extensively used for solving computationally intensive scientific problems. However, there is limited support for Quality of Service (QoS) based distributed computing on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) clusters. this limitation has restricted successful deployment of distributed real-time high-performance computing applications to customized and dedicated embedded multi-processor systems. this paper describes research work that attempts to provide a cluster platform that can guarantee access to computational and communication resources to distributed applications. the authors have developed PromisQoS, an architecture that supports execution of hard real-time distributed applications on a Linux cluster while providing high-throughput and low-latency communication using Myrinet. PromisQoS consists of the following major components -- Hare, BDM-RT and Turtle. Hare is a prototype implementation of time-based QoS channels specified by the real-time Message Passing Interface (MPI/RT 1.1) standard. BDM-RT is a low-level messaging library on Myrinet that provides deterministic communication latency and bandwidth on Myrinet. Turtle, a variant of RT-Linux, is the real-time operating system that provides guaranteed computation time. this work demonstrates that it is possible to deploy hard real-time distributed applications on COTS clusters and underlines the significance of the MPI/RT API in the realm of distributed high-performance computing applications that require QoS.
