this paper studies the current status and future directions of RTOS (real-time Operating systems) for time-sensitive CPS (Cyber-Physical systems). GPOS (General Purpose Operating systems) existed before RTOS but did not meet performance requirements for time sensitive CPS. Many GPOS have put forward adaptations to meet the requirements of real-time performance, and this paper compares RTOS and GPOS and shows their pros and cons for CPS applications. Furthermore, comparisons among select RTOS such as VxWorks, RTLinux, and FreeRTOS have been conducted in terms of scheduling, kernel, and priority inversion. Various tools for WCET (Worst-Case Execution time) estimation are discussed. this paper also presents a CPS use case of RTOS, i.e. JetOS for avionics, and future advancements in RTOS such as multi-core RTOS, new RTOS architecture and RTOS security for CPS. © 2020 ieee.

In the automotive domain there is a renewed interest for the adoption of fixed priority real-time servers, as a way to implement more efficient reservation mechanisms than TDMAbased methods. In this paper, we take advantage of their temporal isolation to serve tasks originally scheduled in the background so that they can meet their deadlines. Hence, we present a method to implement a Deferrable Server (DS) on top of ETAS RTA-OS, a ubiquitous AUTOSAR-compliant OS, and propose a heuristic to select its parameters. We then prove the effectiveness of the parametrization by applying the technique to an industrial case study consisting of an automotive engine control system. © 2020 ieee.

the development of the Internet of things (IoT) has given birth to many real-time applications, which have strict requirements for fresh data. therefore, a new indicator, age-of-information (AoI), is defined to measure data freshness. On the other hand, the IoT devices such as remote sensors are usually energy-constrained. In this paper, we study the energy-age tradeoff in a state update system. In this system, a source node senses the status data and transmits to a receiver through an error-prone channel. When the transmission fails, the source may either retransmits the existing data to save energy, or sense and transmits new data to reduce the age-of-information. Hybrid Automatic Repeat request (HARQ) and threshold-based retransmission strategy are adopted. then, we derive the expressions of the average information age and average energy consumption of the system. Finally, the theoretical results are verified via simulations, and the energy-age tradeoff relationship is analyzed. In addition, it is shown that HARQ strategy is more efficient than Automatic Repeat request (ARQ) when the channel condition is very poor. © 2021 ieee.

A multi-core processor trend becomes common in control-oriented embedded systems such as in-vehicle systems in cyber-physical systems. Multi-cores in control systems allows to achieve better control performance. However, the existing control design support systems do not support delays in control software implementation that need in the multi-core design as well as in the single-core design. Another fundamental problem is that CPU simulators that are often used in the control design phase are slow. In this paper, we present a simulation environment for an embedded control system with a multi-core processor based on a faster CPU simulation providing elapsed time estimation of the control software. We demonstrate the results of our simulation against a benchmark program and show the effectiveness of our environment applied to an actual control system. © 2020 ieee.

At present, most applications that require fast network transmission use the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) at the transport layer. However, many network transmissions rely on simple traversal to find and fill UDP protocol messages, which are prone to errors and not stable enough, especially in embedded real-time OS. Based on the analysis of the UDP network protocol framework, this article focuses on the instability of the UDP protocol application, designs a UDP control block and a functional framework specifically for UDP protocol transmission, and finally implements the test in the VxWorks environment, and the results prove to be improved Stability of UDP protocol function realization.

In the distributed system, applications often suffer from unexpectedly high response time fluctuation which is a consequence of long-tail latency. One efficient way of reducing tail latency is to use an appropriate replica selection strategy. In this paper, through extensive experiments, we analyze and evaluate two popular state-of-the-art replica selection strategies of key-value store systems: Cassandra dynamic snitch and C3. After analyzing all the experimental results we develop a prediction based replica selection strategy and implement it on Cassandra 3.0. Our proposed algorithm outperforms both C3 and Cassandra dynamic snitch. For evaluation, we test Cassandra dynamic snitch, C3, and our proposed algorithm on a 15 nodes Cassandra cluster. For generating test datasets and workloads we use industry-standard Yahoo Cloud Serving Benchmark (YCSB).

Nowadays, video surveillance has a crucial role. Analyzing surveillance videos is, however, a time consuming and tiresome procedure. In the last years, artificial intelligence paved the way for automatic and accurate surveillance-video analysis. In parallel to the development of artificial-intelligence methodologies, edge computing is becoming an active field of research with the final goal to provide cost-effective and real time deployment of the developed methodologies. In this work, we present an edge artificial intelligence application to video surveillance. Our approach relies on a set of four IP cameras, which acquire video frames that are processed on the edge using the NVIDIA (R) Jetson Nano. A state-of-the-art deep-learning model, called Single Shot multibox Detector (SSD) MobileNetV2 network, is used to perform object and people detection in realtime. the proposed infrastructure obtained an inference speed of similar to 10.0 Frames per Second (FPS) for each parallel video stream. these results prompt the possibility of translating our work into a real word scenario. the integration of the presented application into a wider monitoring system with a central unit could bring benefits to the overall infrastructure. Indeed our application could send only video-related high-level information to the central unit, allowing it to combine information with data coming from other sensing devices without unuseful data overload. this would ensure a fast response in case of emergency or detected anomalies. We hope this work will contribute to stimulate the research in the field of edge artificial intelligence for video surveillance.

When users in various web and mobile applications enjoy the convenience of recommendation systems, they are vulnerable to attribute inference attacks. the accumulating online behaviors of users (e.g., clicks, searches, ratings) naturally brings out user preferences, and poses an inevitable threat of privacy that adversaries can infer one's private profiles (e.g., gender, sexual orientation, political view) with AI-based algorithms. Existing defense methods assume the existence of a trusted third party, rely on computationally intractable algorithms, or have impact on recommendation utility. these imperfections make them impractical for privacy preservation in real-life scenarios. In this work, we introduce BiasBooster, a practical proactive defense method based on behavior segmentation, to protect user privacy against attribute inference attacks from user behaviors, while retaining recommendation utility with a heuristic recommendation aggregation module. BiasBooster is a usercentric approach from client side, which proactively divides a user's behaviors into weakly related segments and perform them with several dummy identities, then aggregates real-time recommendations for user from different dummy identities. We estimate its effectiveness of preservation on both privacy and recommendation utility through extensive evaluations on two real-world datasets. A Chrome extension is conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of applying BiasBooster in real world. Experimental results show that compared to existing defenses, BiasBooster substantially reduces the averaged accuracy of attribute inference attacks, with minor utility loss of recommendations.

Microservices represent a popular paradigm to construct large-scale applications in many domains thanks to benefits such as scalability, flexibility, and agility. However, it is difficult to manage and operate a microservice system due to its high dynamics and complexity. In particular, the frequent updates of microservices lead to the absence of historical failure data, where the current automatic recovery methods fail short. In this paper, we propose an automatic recovery method named MicroRAS, which requires no historical failure data, to mitigate performance issues in microservice systems. MicroRAS is a model-driven method that selects the appropriate recovery action with a trade-off between the effectiveness and recovery time of actions. It estimates the effectiveness of an action in terms of its effects of recovering the pinpointed faulty service and its effects of interfering with other services. the estimation of action effects is based on a system-state model represented by an attributed graph that tracks the propagation of effects. For the experimental evaluation, several types of anomalies are injected into a microservice system based on Kubernetes, which also serves a real-world workload. the corresponding benchmarks show that the actions selected by MicroRAS can recover the faulty services by 94.7%, and reduce the interference to other services by at least 44.3% compared to baseline methods.

In the Industry 4.0 era, time-sensitive and missioncritical control applications still have a long way to go, from being tied down and co-located with the systems they control, to taking full advantage of the cloud. Conservatively keeping applications local will deprive these complex applications of abundant compute capacity, wider system integration, and the potential for collaborative control efforts. Feedback control systems are unlike other cloud applications - their performance and objectives can be formally defined, they require timely feedback, and they are sensitive to variations in system performance and noise. Although resources are plentiful, the cloud is a noisy and latency prone execution environment, detrimental to feedback control system. In this paper, we evaluate a set of cloud platforms and infrastructures with the intention of hosting feedback control systems. In lower levels of the software stack, we observe differences between clouds. Further up in the stack we see the disadvantages of applying cloud native platforms. With an understanding of expected performance we proceed to evaluate a simple control strategy and show how the sensitive nature of control can cause a seemingly adequate cloud platform to pose a high risk, while a seemingly inadequate platform can positively affect the performance of our proposed controller.
