Stack sharing between tasks may significantly reduce the amount of memory required in resource-constrained real-time embedded systems. Existing work on stack sharing mainly focused on stack sharing between tasks that neither leave any data on the stack from one instance to another nor suspend themselves, i.e. tasks with a so-called single-shot execution. In this paper, we consider stack memory requirements of AUTOSAR/OSEK-compliant scheduling policies for a mixed task set, consisting of so-called basic and extended tasks. Unlike basic tasks, that have a single-shot execution, extended tasks are allowed to leave data on the stack from one instance to another and to suspend themselves. We prove that minimizing the shared stack requirement for such a mixed task set is an NP-hard problem. We subsequently provide an heuristic-based algorithm to minimize stack usage of a mixed task set, and evaluate the algorithm through a case study of an implementation of an unmanned aerial vehicle.

Today's multi-core and many-core COTS platforms make available a large amount of computational resource for real-time applications. As they aim at increasing performance for real-time, their challenges are the guarantees for timing constraints. real-time modeling and analysis are thus facing shared resources, optimization mechanisms, and sophisticated functionalities which all combine into complex system dynamics that are extremely costly to characterize. this paper proposes a measurement-based approach and a statistical analysis applied to define average and worst-case models to task executions under different possible execution conditions. the framework is formalized and then used to investigate different families of shared resources interference effects occurring on multi-core platforms;such effects are quantified with statistical metrics applied to measurements of tasks execution times. the focus of the work is on effects due to shared memories within the NXP T4240 multi-core platform and the PikeOS hypervisor. A set of experiments is conducted to validate the framework proposed.

Safe and efficient traffic control remains a challenging task with the continued increase in the number of vehicles, especially in urban areas. this paper focuses on traffic control at intersections, since urban roads with closely spaced intersections are often prone to queue spillbacks, which disrupt traffic flows across the entire network and increase congestion. While various intelligent traffic control solutions exist for autonomous systems, they are not applicable to or ineffective against human-operated vehicles or mixed traffic. On the other hand, existing approaches to manage intersections with human-operated vehicles cannot adequately adjust to dynamic traffic conditions. this paper presents a technology-agnostic adaptive real-time server based approach to dynamically determine signal timings at an intersection based on changing traffic conditions and queue lengths (i.e., wait times) to minimize, if not eliminate, spillbacks without unnecessarily increasing delays associated with intersection crossings. this work is also the first to provide worst-case bounds on wait time making our approach more dependable and predictable. the proposed approach was validated in simulations and on a realistic hardware testbed with robots mimicking human driving behaviors. Compared to the pre-timed traffic control and an adaptive scheduling based traffic control, our algorithm is able to avoid spillbacks under highly dynamic traffic conditions and improve the average crossing delay in most cases by 10-50%.

Verifying complex Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) is increasingly important given the push to deploy safety-critical autonomous features. Unfortunately, traditional verification methods do not scale to the complexity of these systems and do not provide systematic methods to protect verified properties when not all the components can be verified. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a real-time mixed-trust computing framework that combines verification and protection. the framework introduces a new task model, where an application task can have both an untrusted and a trusted part. the untrusted part allows complex computations supported by a full OS with a real-time scheduler running in a VM hosted by a trusted hypervisor. the trusted part is executed by another scheduler within the hypervisor and is thus protected from the untrusted part. If the untrusted part fails to finish by a specific time, the trusted part is activated to preserve safety (e.g., prevent a crash) including its timing guarantees. this framework is the first allowing the use of untrusted components for CPS critical functions while preserving logical and timing guarantees, even in the presence of malicious attackers. We present the framework design and implementation along with the schedulability analysis and the coordination protocol between the trusted and untrusted parts. We also present our Raspberry Pi 3 implementation along with experiments showing the behavior of the system under failures of untrusted components, and a drone application to demonstrate its practicality.

With the growing scale of Cyber-Physical systems (CPSs), it is challenging to maintain their stability under all operating conditions. How to reduce the downtime and locate the failures becomes a core issue in system design. In this paper, we employ a hierarchical contract-based resilience framework to guarantee the stability of CPS. In this framework, we use Assume Guarantee (A-G) contracts to monitor the non-functional properties of individual components (e.g., power and latency), and hierarchically compose such contracts to deduce information about faults at the system level. the hierarchical contracts enable rapid fault detection in large-scale CPS. However, due to the vast number of components in CPS, manually designing numerous contracts and the hierarchy becomes challenging. To address this issue, we propose a technique to automatically decompose a root contract into multiple lower-level contracts depending on I/O dependencies between components. We then formulate a multi-objective optimization problem to search the optimal parameters of each lower-level contract. this enables automatic contract refinement taking into consideration the communication overhead between components. Finally, we use a case study from the manufacturing domain to experimentally demonstrate the benefits of the proposed framework.

the integration of communication, computing, and control in mobile cyberphysical systems leads to many challenges. this is due to the complex interactions between these three subsystems along with the limited resources in mobile cyberphysical devices. In this paper, we design and construct mobile cyberphysical nodes to be integrated with other stationary nodes to form a wireless network. these nodes are autonomous aerial vehicles (AAVs) forming a network with each other and with ground access point nodes that we use as a testbed called Horns. In this testbed, we run our developed rate distortion optimized (RDO) and adaptive wireless video transmission protocols. In our design of these transmission protocol, we take into consideration low computation, power, and bandwidth capabilities of Horus testbed that is a good representation of mobile cyberphysical systems. We provide results of our experiments on Horus testbed. these include both spacial and temporal distortion metrics and comparison between various transmission protocols along with samples of transmitted images and corresponding distorted received images from our recorded videos.

Recent technological advances have fostered the development of complex industrial cyber-physical systems with communication delay requirements. the consequences of delay requirement violation in such systems may become increasingly severe. In this paper, we propose a contract-based fault-resilient methodology which aims at managing the communication delays of network flows in industries. With this objective, we present a lightweight mechanism to estimate end-to-end communication delays in the network where the clocks of the switches are not synchronized. the mechanism aims at providing high level of accuracy with little communication overhead. We then propose a contract-based framework using software-defined networking (SDN) where the components are associated with delay contracts and a resilience manager. the proposed resilience management framework contains: (1) contracts which state requirements about components' behaviors, (2) observers which are responsible to detect contract failure (fault), (3) monitors to detect events such as run-time changes in the delay requirements and link failure, (4) control logic to take suitable decisions based on the type of the fault, (5) resilience manager to decide response strategies containing the best course of action as per the control logic decision. Finally, we present a delay-aware path finding algorithm which is used to route/reroute the network flows to provide resilience in the case of faults and, to adapt to the changes in the network state. Performance of the proposed framework is evaluated with the Ryu SDN controller and Mininet network emulator.

Collision avoidance implies that extra motion in joint space must be taken, which might exert unexpected influences on the execution of the desired end-effector tasks. In this paper, a novel framework for generating collision-free trajectories while respecting task priorities is proposed. Firstly, a data-driven approach is applied to learn an efficient representation of the distance decision function of the system. the function is then working as the collision avoidance constraints in the inverse kinematics (IK) solver, which avoids the collision between manipulators. To eliminate undesired influences of the extra motion for collision avoidance on the execution of tasks, task constraints are proposed to control the task priorities, offering the system with the ability to trade off between collision avoidance and task execution. Furthermore, the overall framework is formulated as a QP (quadratic programming), therein guarantees a real time performance. Numerical simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the presented method.

Strawberry quality has been a crucial factor when it comes to consumer satisfaction. Having quality and cost-efficient strawberries would increase consumer satisfaction while increasing sales from the merchants’ perspective. As such, being able to classify strawberries into the desirable and undesirable categories would aid small businesses and consumers in determining whether the strawberries sold and bought are desirable based on key indicators such as shape and color. To address that, this study was conducted with the use of convolutional neural networks. the strawberry datasets used are a combination of a pre-classified dataset from another study and a dataset of images photographed solely for the purpose of this study. the images are classified as desirable and undesirable wherein 350 images of each set are used for training, 200 images for validation, and 100 images for testing. the generated CNN model is simulated using epochs=15 and batch size=8. the resulting CNN model has a training accuracy=98.41%, a validation accuracy=92.75%, and a testing accuracy=100% which makes the model efficient in classifying strawberries into the desirable and undesirable categories.
