Recently unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been widely adopted by military and civilian applications due to their strong autonomies and adaptabilities. Although UAVs can achieve effective cost reduction and flexibility enhancement in the development of systems with search or surveillance missions, they result in a complex path planning problem. Especially in region coverage systems, coverage path planning problem, which seeks a path that covers all regions of interest, has a NP-Hard computational complexity and is difficult to solve. In this paper, we study the coverage path planning problem for heterogeneous UAVs in multiple region systems. First, with the models of UAVs and regions, an exact formulation based on mixed integer linear programming is presented to produce an optimal coverage path. then taking into account both the scanning time on regions and the flight time between regions, an efficient heuristic is proposed to assign regions and to obtain coverage orders for UAVs. Finally, experiments are conducted to show the reliability and efficiency of the proposed heuristic from several aspects.

there is a huge demand of video surveillance based intelligent security systems which can automatically detect the unauthorized entry or mal-intentional intrusion to the unattended sensitive areas and notify to the concerned authorities in real-time. A novel video-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) using deep learning is proposed. Here, You Only Look Once (YOLO) algorithm is used for object detection and intrusion is decided using our proposed algorithm based on the shifted center of mass of the detected object. Further, Simple Online and real-time Tracking (SORT) algorithm is used for the tracking of the intruder in real-time. the developed system is also implemented and tested for live video stream using NVIDIA Jetson TX2 development platform with an accuracy of 97% and average fps of 30. Here, the proposed IDS is a generic one where the user can select the region of interest (the area to be intrusion free) of any size and shape from the reference (starting) frame and potential intruders such as a person, vehicle, etc. from the list of trained object classes. Hence, it can have a wide range of smart city applications such as person intrusion free zone, no vehicle entry zone, no parking zone, smart home security, etc.

In the last two decades, Advanced Driver Assistance systems (ADAS) has been one of the most actively conducted areas of studies for reducing traffic accidents. Road lane line detection is one of the essential modules of ADAS. Lots of advancement has been already done, but most of the recent papers did not consider the wide variability of challenging nighttime conditions. In this paper, a method to detect nighttime lane line under different challenging conditions proposed. this simple technique can reach the real-time computation for ADAS applications and at the same time, can handle multiple challenges at a time. In the beginning, Bilateral Filter has been used to reduce the noise while preserving the edges. Next, we choose an optimized threshold (OT) for the Canny edge detector, which can detect edges under a wide variability of nighttime illumination conditions. After that Region of Interest (ROI) is selected using an equilateral triangle-shaped mask which helps to reduce computation time and remove unwanted edges. After that, lines are extracted by Probabilistic Hough Transform (PHT). Finally, a robust technique Slope and Angle based Geometric Constraints (SAGC) is proposed to remove the non-lane lines extracted by PHT. SAGC reduce false detection significantly. Experimental results show that the average detection rate is 94.05%, and the average detection time is 26.11ms per frame which outperformed state-of-the-art method.

In the automotive domain there is a renewed interest for the adoption of fixed priority real-time servers, as a way to implement more efficient reservation mechanisms than TDMAbased methods. In this paper, we take advantage of their temporal isolation to serve tasks originally scheduled in the background so that they can meet their deadlines. Hence, we present a method to implement a Deferrable Server (DS) on top of ETAS RTA-OS, a ubiquitous AUTOSAR-compliant OS, and propose a heuristic to select its parameters. We then prove the effectiveness of the parametrization by applying the technique to an industrial case study consisting of an automotive engine control system.

the fast semantics project examines the use of the OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) in embedded industrial systems and proposes the design of a customizable, hard real time capable OPC UA Intellectual Property Core (IP Core) for single chip computing plattforms. this allows using OPC UA in both novel energy efficient sensor applications and in state of the art field devices. these single chip OPC UA servers form the semantic data sources for future applications such as cloud based added value services or machine learning applications. this article presents the design alternatives and first synthesis results for the implementation of OPC UA servers in embedded systems.

the paper presents a real-time computing framework for intelligent real-time edge services, on behalf of local embedded devices that are themselves unable to support extensive computations. the work contributes to a new direction in realtime computing that develops scheduling algorithms for machine intelligence tasks that enable anytime prediction. We show that deep neural network workflows can be cast as imprecise computations, each with a mandatory part and (several) optional parts whose execution utility depends on input data. With our design, deep neural networks can be preempted before their completion and support anytime inference. the goal of the realtime scheduler is to maximize the average accuracy of deep neural network outputs while meeting task deadlines, thanks to opportunistic shedding of the least necessary optional parts. the work is motivated by the proliferation of increasingly ubiquitous but resource-constrained embedded devices (for applications ranging from autonomous cars to the Internet of things) and the desire to develop services that endow them with intelligence. Experiments on recent GPU hardware and a state of the art deep neural network for machine vision illustrate that our scheme can increase the overall accuracy by 10% ~ 20% while incurring (nearly) no deadline misses.

Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) has the ability to dramatically improve real-time scheduling, but existing methods are cumbersome, frequently need specialized hardware, or are limited to producing table-based schedules. Here, an easily portable method for quickly applying SMT to priority-driven hard real-time systems is given. Using a combination of integer linear programming and heuristic bin-packing, a partitioned earliest-deadline-first (EDF) scheduler that takes advantage of SMT is produced. the integer linear programming and partitioning are done offline, but generally require only a few seconds, even given over a hundred tasks. A large-scale schedulability study is conducted, showing that compared to partitioned scheduling without SMT, the schedulable utilization for the considered hardware platform is nearly doubled in the best cases.

In this paper, we present a real time interactive system for running flexible workflow applications. this system facilitates the execution of these applications in terms of time execution complexity as it is based on flexibility mechanism. these workflows are built on an abstract level, through BPMN models using flexibility patterns. We define two flexibility patterns based on BPMN (Business Process Model Notation) that deals with changes of resource requirements for workflows. the provided models specify the functional view of workflows, whereas, their behavioral view is described using state-chart diagrams. A state-chart diagram represents the model specifying our real time system which controls the execution of workflow applications by making decisions on the use of flexibility actions. this execution is supported by the BPEL4WS engine that we have amended to execute flexible workflows and to be controlled by our real time system. Finally, we present some results of evaluations of our system.

Autonomous driving techniques frequently need the clustering and the classification of data coming from several input sensors, like cameras, radar and lidars. these sub-tasks need to be implemented in real-time in embedded on-board computing units. the trend for data classification and clustering in the signal processing community is moving towards machine learning (ML) algorithms. One of them, which plays a central role, is the k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) algorithm. To meet stringent requirements in terms of real-time computing capability and circuit/memory complexity, ML accelerators are needed. Innovation is required in terms of computing arithmetic since classic integer numbers lead to low classification accuracy with respect to the needs of safety critical applications like autonomous driving. Instead, floating numbers require too much circuit and memory. To overcome these issues the paper shows that the use of a new format, called Posit, implemented in a new cppPosit software library, can lead to a k-NN implementation having the same accuracy of floats, but with halved bit-size. this means that a Posit Processing Unit ( PPU) reduces by a factor higher than 2 the data transfer and storage complexity of ML accelerators. We also prove that a LUT-based complete tabulated implementation of a PPU for a 8-bit requires just 64 kB storage size, compliant with memory-constrained devices.

embedded systems have been used to control physical environments for decades. Usually, such use cases require low latencies between commands and actions as well as a high predictability of the expected worst-case delay. To achieve this on small, low-powered microcontrollers, real-time Operating systems (RTOSs) are used to manage the different tasks on these machines as deterministically as possible. However, with the advent of the Internet of things (IoT) in industrial applications, the same embedded systems are now equipped with networking capabilities, possibly endangering critical real-time systems through an open gate to *** paper presents our initial study of the impact network connections can have on real-time embedded systems. Specifically, we look at three aspects: the impact of network-generated interrupts, the overhead of the related networking tasks, and the feasibility of sharing computing resources between networking and real-time tasks. We conducted experiments on two setups: One treating NICs and drivers as black boxes and one simulating network interrupts on the machines. the preliminary results show that a critical task performance loss of up to 6.67% per received packet per second could be induced where lateness impacts of 1% per packet per second can be attributed exclusively to ISR-generated delays.
