Embedding Machine Learning enables integrating intelligence in recent application domains such as Internet of things, portable healthcare systems, and wearable devices. this paper presents an assessment of approximate computing methods at algorithmic, architecture, and circuit levels and draws perspectives for further developments and applications. the main goal is to investigate how approximate computing may reduce the complexity and enable the feasibility of embedded Machine Learning (ML) systems. though ML is a powerful paradigm for applications in the perceptual domain (i.e. vision, touch, hearing, etc.), their computational complexity is very high and consequently real time operation and ultra-low power are still very challenging objectives. On the other hand, approximate computing has emerged as an effective solution to reduce hardware complexity, time latency and to increase energy efficiency.

With the growing scale of Cyber-Physical systems (CPSs), it is challenging to maintain their stability under all operating conditions. How to reduce the downtime and locate the failures becomes a core issue in system design. In this paper, we employ a hierarchical contract-based resilience framework to guarantee the stability of CPS. In this framework, we use Assume Guarantee (A-G) contracts to monitor the non-functional properties of individual components (e.g., power and latency), and hierarchically compose such contracts to deduce information about faults at the system level. the hierarchical contracts enable rapid fault detection in large-scale CPS. However, due to the vast number of components in CPS, manually designing numerous contracts and the hierarchy becomes challenging. To address this issue, we propose a technique to automatically decompose a root contract into multiple lower-level contracts depending on I/O dependencies between components. We then formulate a multi-objective optimization problem to search the optimal parameters of each lower-level contract. this enables automatic contract refinement taking into consideration the communication overhead between components. Finally, we use a case study from the manufacturing domain to experimentally demonstrate the benefits of the proposed framework.

With the rapid development of information technology (IT), manufacturing technologies have been greatly leveraged in terms of the intelligence level, productivity, flexibility, and capabilities of systems. the evolution trend in developing a modern manufacturing system is to adopt as many smart 'things' as possible to achieve a high level of functionalities, responsiveness, and flexibility in a cost-effective way. On the other hand, commonly-used functional modules in a system must be equipped with appropriate instrumentation, so that real-time data related to the states and operations of modules can be collected and utilized to support decision-making units at upper system levels. In this paper, we present a cost-effective solution as the instrumentation of generic robotic grippers. the requirement of real-time force measurement is discussed, low-cost strain-gauges are proposed as sensing elements, and the method for designing the layout and circuit of embedded instrumentation are presented. the design concept and methods have been implemented and validated via prototyping and experimenting. the proposed embedded design is applicable to other robotic modules where real-time force measurement is needed for a wide scope of the Internet of things (IoT) based applications.

Battery storage systems are becoming an integral part of the electricity network in the form of an embedded and off-grid structure. However, the impact of internal and external thermal and environmental factors on the operation of the BSSs are not well understood, which directly affect the design, the setup and running cost, and the life time of the unit. this paper aims to advance the knowledge of the BSS design, its operation and its location by understanding the real time data gathered using a well-equipped grid scale battery storage system as it was operating in an autonomous microgrid configuration in a distribution system. the results are presented to provide a valuable reference for the design of similar system.

Mobile devices have become the primary method of communication and information access for people around the world. Currently, most mobile applications create or consume data stored in standalone databases. this means most of these applications exist in silos without exploiting the potential of being linked with data collected from other applications or external data on the Web. the Web community has advocated the use of Linked Data technologies to address this issue for data interoperability on Web-based applications. Although we have seen some success from Web content publishers in using or publishing Linked Data, there are few examples to be found on mobile platforms. Our platform, developed as an extension of MIT App Inventor, bridges this gap by enabling developers to build mobile applications that can take advantage of Linked Data. the platform includes components for querying remote SPARQL endpoints, generating and storing triples from input and context, as well as enable crowd-sourcing of Linked Data through cloud based messaging. We believe that our platform will reduce the burden on mobile developers working with Linked Data and open up many opportunities for building mobile applications that interact with and contribute to the Linked Data world.

Computer Numerical Control is a technology made up of several blocks. the single most important of these blocks is the Control Unit, responsible for performing security checks, user interface, coordinating the motion, file handling and coordinating several peripherals usually used on CNC applications. Over the course of last years, embedded systems presented a huge improvement in processing power as well as easiness of use and application, given the advances in the open source and open hardware development community. the present paper presents the development process of a high-end embedded system based CNC controller, capable of operating including motion constraints up to the fourth order time derivative of position for each of the individual Cartesian axis. © 2018 ieee.

the fast semantics project examines the use of the OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) in embedded industrial systems and proposes the design of a customizable, hard real time capable OPC UA Intellectual Property Core (IP Core) for single chip computing plattforms. this allows using OPC UA in both novel energy efficient sensor applications and in state of the art field devices. these single chip OPC UA servers form the semantic data sources for future applications such as cloud based added value services or machine learning applications. this article presents the design alternatives and first synthesis results for the implementation of OPC UA servers in embedded systems.

Recent technological advances have fostered the development of complex industrial cyber-physical systems with communication delay requirements. the consequences of delay requirement violation in such systems may become increasingly severe. In this paper, we propose a contract-based fault-resilient methodology which aims at managing the communication delays of network flows in industries. With this objective, we present a lightweight mechanism to estimate end-to-end communication delays in the network where the clocks of the switches are not synchronized. the mechanism aims at providing high level of accuracy with little communication overhead. We then propose a contract-based framework using software-defined networking (SDN) where the components are associated with delay contracts and a resilience manager. the proposed resilience management framework contains: (1) contracts which state requirements about components' behaviors, (2) observers which are responsible to detect contract failure (fault), (3) monitors to detect events such as run-time changes in the delay requirements and link failure, (4) control logic to take suitable decisions based on the type of the fault, (5) resilience manager to decide response strategies containing the best course of action as per the control logic decision. Finally, we present a delay-aware path finding algorithm which is used to route/reroute the network flows to provide resilience in the case of faults and, to adapt to the changes in the network state. Performance of the proposed framework is evaluated with the Ryu SDN controller and Mininet network emulator.

this paper presents a real-time scheduling framework for the robot operating system (ROS) called ROSCH. ROS is an open-source software platform and a meta-operating system designed for robots. ROS provides extensive development libraries and has been widely used for autonomous driving systems. However, ROS does not guarantee real-time performance;hence, a ROS-based autonomous driving car could cause a traffic accident. therefore, ROSCH comprises three functionalities that do not exist in the ROS to guarantee real-time performance: (1) a synchronization system, (2) fixed-priority based directed acyclic graph (DAG) scheduling framework, and (3) fail-safe function. In particular, the synchronization system guarantees that the timestamp gaps between sensor measurements will be less than or equal to the calculated value. the fixed-priority based DAG scheduling framework guarantees that end-to-end latency is less than or equal to an estimated value. Operating both mechanisms simultaneously guarantees the final output topic frequency. the fail-safe functionality provides a danger avoidance action at a deadline miss. In addition, these functionalities are designed to be compatible with legacy software. No previous method that guarantees real-time operation provides a comparable range of features while maintaining the compatibility with the existing software. Experimental results showed that the time differences between sensor timestamps remained below a calculated value. Moreover, correctly scheduled tasks incur an end-to-end latency that is within an estimated value. In addition, the throughput of the end node is achieved. Finally, the fail-safe functionality overhead is 45 mu sec on an average, which is 0.004 % of the average execution time for one node.
