Hydraulic pumping systems are ubiquitous in a wide range of industrial processes. However, such systems may exhibit dangerous pressure oscillations, which may lead to serious equipment damage and no programmed plant outage. In order to prevent equipment damage, this paper proposed a damping controller to mitigate dangerous pressure oscillations in hydraulic pumping systems. the controller design is based on frequency domain techniques. For implementation objectives, the resulting damping control law is then converted to discrete time domain by using Tustins methodology and, subsequently, embedded in a hardware built around a 32-bits ARM microcontroller. To assess the controller performance, experimental tests were developed on a laboratory scale pumping system comprised of a centrifugal pump driven by an induction motor-inverter set. the experimental results showed that the proposed controller provides an improve performance by mitigating the pressure oscillations in the tubes. Furthermore, the approach is of low-cost implementation in existing pumping systems. © 2018 ieee.

Hand pose estimation is an attractive problem in computer vision for its key role in gesture controlled human-computer interaction (HCI) applications. this problem focuses on revealing the hand skeleton structure from visual information. However, it is very challenging for complicated hand configurations. In this paper, a kinematic constrained cascaded autoencoder regression (KCAE) framework is proposed to estimate the hand pose from a single depth image. We introduce a two-stage cascaded structure to regress the palm direction and the whole hand joints successively. In addition, the edge constraints are first introduced to the loss function with an end-to-end manner, which maintains the kinematics of hands and makes the prediction more reasonable. With this framework, different features are evaluated, including the handcrafted features and the features learned from CNN. the experiments widely conducted on our collected dataset and the public MSRA hand gesture database demonstrate the effectiveness of KCAE. Overall, the proposed method achieves comparable performance with state-of-the-arts.

the constant search for methods that allow the production processes improvement is a driving force for the development and integration of current technological solutions in systems which are, currently, still purely human based. It is in this context that the company "Factoryplay" comes forward with the challenge to upgrade its current sewing stations by adding a set of mechanization and automation solutions. this article documents the steps carried out to provide the current solution with the required technical attributes. In this paper, the instrumentation and actuation devised solutions, as well as the method employed to design an embedded PI controller, will be presented. the PI controller allows the closed-loop control of the station movement speed as a function of the sewing machine speed. the practical results obtained, regarding the dynamic response of the sewing station, are in line with the simulated ones.

Technologies of irrigation systems are developed with a focus on intelligent water management, advanced features and remote control of solar photovoltaic watering systems (SPVWSs). the new generation of inexpensive microcontrollers comes with high level of computation capability and provides low-cost solutions. In this direction, this paper presents a new multithreading design and implementation of an embedded irrigation system running on solar power. the design combines the advanced concepts of concurrency programming, namely multithreading and virtual timers, with the embedded computing resources of smart devices. According to the design and test results through an experimental greenhouse, this device provides an accuracy real-time management of all activities of the SPVWS with eventually a low power consumption. © 2018 ieee.

In this work, we examine the resiliency of a state-of-the-art end-to-end video summarization (VS) application that serves as a representative emerging workload in the domain of real time edge computing. the VS application constitutes key video and image analytic elements that are processed by embedded systems aboard unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). real-time performance and energy constraints motivate the consideration of approximations to the VS algorithm. However, mission-critical UAV applications also demand stringent levels of resilience to soft errors that are exacerbated with higher altitude. In this work, we study the effects of three different types of software approximations on the application level resiliency (to soft errors) of the VS algorithm. We show that our approximations yield significant energy savings (up to 68%), with commensurate improvement in performance, without a degradation in the application resilience. Further, by proposing a novel quality metric (appropriate for the UAV vision analytics domain) for the summarized video output, we show that even though the rate of Silent Data Corruptions (SDCs) increases slightly (< 2%), the impact of these SDCs on output quality is limited. thus, we conclude that software approximation can be utilized to achieve significant gains in performance and energy without affecting application resiliency.

In this paper we study the realization of periodically time-varying behavioral systems by means of periodic state-space models. In particular, we focus on the case of period two and investigate under which conditions a given behavior with periodic representation obtained by alternating two time-invariant image representations can be realized by a periodic state-space system. We first show that, in general, one cannot expect to obtain a periodic state-space realization by means of the individual realizations of each associated time-invariant behaviors. However, we give conditions for such procedure to hold. the presented results are illustrated by examples.

Recent advances on networked devices under different communication infrastructures and capabilities are reshaping the real of networked control systems. As a result of the integration of wireless devices in cyber-physical environments, a set of new challenges has arisen. Under this new paradigm, it is imperative to ensure that the underlying communication, computation and control methods are appropriately designed, and subsequently evaluated using very stringent metrics. thus, in such a context, it becomes crucial the availability of simulation tools that could transparently aggregate components of a given real cyber-physical system with a virtual world entities counterparts, either wireless nodes, routers or even plants. this paper presents a dual reality environment that allows merging real networked applications with user deployed virtual counterparts, and the underlying realistic simulation of the overall dual cyber-physical system. A benchmark three-tank system under remote control over a wireless sensor and actuator network is used to illustrate how the simulator can be effectively used.

Loss of vision has a large detrimental impact on a person's mobility. Every day, visually impaired people (VIPs) face various challenges just to get around in the most diverse environments. Technological solutions, called Electronic Travel Aids, help a VIP with these challenges, giving greater confidence in the task of getting around in unfamiliar surroundings. thus, this article presents an embedded navigation and classification system for helping VIPs indoors. Using stereo vision, the system is able to detect obstacles and choose safe ways for the VIP to walk around without colliding. A convolutional neural network using a graphics processing unit (GPU) classifies the obstacles. Acoustic feedback is transmitted to the VIP. the article also features a wearable prototype, to which the system hardware is docked for use. Using the system, the prototype could detect and classify obstacles in real time defining free paths, all with battery autonomy of about 6 hours.
