As with the requirements of high-performance and flexible computing, reconfigurable computing systems have become a subject of a great deal of research. Reconfigurable computing systems have to deal with unpredictable events from the environment such as arrival of new tasks, and hardware or software failures, by adapting the task allocation and scheduling, in order to maintain the system feasibility and performance. this paper presents a novel adaptive approach to address the real-time task scheduling issue in reconfigurable multiprocessor embedded systems based on energy harvesting with the consideration of system performance optimization. An energy efficient offline task mapping and scheduling algorithm is proposed to balance the workload in the multiprocessor embedded system. In order to optimize the system performance and to guarantee the system correctness in the presence of reconfiguration scenarios, a distributed control system is built to process a task migration. A cost function to evaluate the energy and time overheads of tasks migration is proposed. Extensive performance evaluations show the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of deadline miss ratio, and the energy gain compared with the related state-of-the-art techniques.

In this paper, a novel game theory based approach for task scheduling on emerging heterogeneous embedded systems is proposed. It relies on the auction concept to assign tasks to players, where players compete against each other by bidding for the tasks in order to acquire them. To ensure the feasibility of game rounds, a set of different utility functions are formulated, such that each player can select its own best strategy, which corresponds to the frequency level that guarantees the minimum energy consumption variation at the overall system level. the proposed energy-aware multiplayer auction-based scheduling approach was extensively evaluated across a set of 13 real applications from 4 standard benchmark suites on the state-of-the-art ARM Juno r2 platform with two different multi-core clusters as composite players, i.e, dual-core Cortex-A72 and a quad-core CortexA53 clusters. For different benchmark combinations, the experimental results show that the proposed approach allows achieving significant energy savings when compared to the standard ARM Linaro, GTS and EAS approaches, i.e., up to 36%, 32% and 22%, respectively. © 2017 ACM.

this paper explores the energy-aware strategy for adaptive task allocation of sporadic task model in distributed reconfigurable embedded systems powered by a renewable energy source. It is challenging to ensure hard real-time deadlines of sporadic tasks in distributed reconfigurable embedded systems that entirely rely on energy harvesting with limited capacity storage because their release times and periods are unknown beforehand. In this regard, we propose a new scheduling algorithm for sporadic task model in energy harvesting reconfigurable distributed embedded system. the proposed approach generates an energy efficient offline task assignment heuristic. then, the offline stage is dynamically extended online by applying a dynamic adaption algorithm. the latter performs three solutions: i) Migration, ii) Degradation of the execution mode, and iii) Removal of tasks in order to maintain schedulability and sustainability of the application software. Simulations show the efficiency of the proposed approach in term of deadline success ratio.

the development of SLAM algorithms in the era of autonomous navigation and the growing demand for autonomous robot in place of human being, has put into question how to reduce the computational complexity and make use of these algorithms to operate in real time. Our work aims to take advantage of the high level synthesis (HLS) on FPGAs to design a real time SLAM application. Precisely, we evaluate the promess-held by the new modern low power FPGAs in accelerating SLAM algorithms. throughtout this, we will attempt to implement a well-known algorithms (FastSLAM2.0), on a new modern FPGA using OpenCL, a standard high level language. Our implementation results show a significant improvement of the algorithm processing time on an FPGA device over a modern powerful embedded GPGPU.

the development of cloud computing attracts a growing number of corporations to implement their applications in data centers. the increase in variety and amount of applications in data centers that support software-defined networking (SDN) protocols makes it a big challenge to maximize revenue for data center providers. However, current SDN controllers just consider latency optimization in network and do not consider latency in virtual machines (VMs), and therefore revenue loss may occur. Different from current studies, this work aims to maximize revenue of a software-defined cloud provider. A Revenue-sensitive Scheduling of Multi-application Tasks (RSMT) method is then proposed to increase the revenue of a cloud provider. It is realized by jointly determining optimal routing paths and VMs for multi-application tasks. Simulation based on real-life task data demonstrates that compared with several current algorithms, RSMT can produce the efficient schedules that increase the cloud provider's revenue and decrease round trip time of multi-application tasks.

this paper presents a real-time operating system (RTOS) that supports location-transparent shared resource management for multi-core embedded control systems. We modify the Multiprocessor Stack Resource Policy (MSRP) for the fixed priority scheduling of OSEK OS and extend an OSEK OS to provide location-transparent resource management based on the modified MSRP. Application tasks access local (intra-core) shared resources and inter-core shared resources using the same system calls. the RTOS also provides location-transparent inter-core and inter-node task management and event control. We have also confirmed that the performance of the RTOS is acceptable for practical embedded control systems.

With the rapid development of sensor techniques, we often face the challenges of monitoring big data streams in modern quality control, which consist of massive series of real-time, continuously and sequentially ordered observations. For example, in manufacturing industries, hundreds or thousands of variables are observed during online production for quality insurance. Also, smart grid infrastructure needs to simultaneously monitor massive access points for intrusion and threat detection. As another example, an image sensing device continuously collects high-resolution images at high frequency for video surveillance and object movement tracking. Ideally, in those applications, it is preferable to detect assignable causes as early as possible, while maintaining a prespecified in-control Average Run Length (ARL).

Travelers mobility simulation is a powerful tool to test strategies in a virtual environment, without impacting the quality of the real traffic network. However, existing mobility multiagent and micro simulations can only consider a sample of the real volumes of travelers, especially for big regions. With distributed simulations, it would be easier to analyze and predict the status of nowadays networks. this kind of simulations requires big computational power and methods to split the simulation between several machines. this work describes how to achieve such a distribution in a microscopic simulation context, and compare our results with a previous work on macroscopic simulation.

In this paper we evaluate the promise held by low-power embedded architectures to implement SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) algorithms. We map and implement 4 SLAM algorithms, that find utility in very different robot applications and autonomous navigation, on an embedded architecture. Our results show that low-power embedded architectures are indeed, sometimes, attractive alternative for some SLAM algorithms. At the same time, efficient software optimizations are mandatory to allow a real-time execution.

A real-time system should operate correctly within deadlines. A failure in response will lead to loss of human life or a big damage to the property. the systems are sometimes considered only mission critical, with mission being very expensive. A Mission Critical System needs study real time software which is highly complex and is vital for the success of the mission. the mission capability depends on this software and proves catastrophic in case of any failure. the software design of real-time system is very complex. To keep in pace with today's modern computing technology the real-time software should adopt new software design methodologies. this paper brings out a comparison of various design methodologies that has evolved over time. the shortcomings of each method to satisfy the requirements of real-time system and the need for a generalized approach as Design patterns.
