In this paper we evaluate the promise held by low-power embedded architectures to implement SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) algorithms. We map and implement 4 SLAM algorithms, that find utility in very different robot applications and autonomous navigation, on an embedded architecture. Our results show that low-power embedded architectures are indeed, sometimes, attractive alternative for some SLAM algorithms. At the same time, efficient software optimizations are mandatory to allow a real-time execution.

A real-time system should operate correctly within deadlines. A failure in response will lead to loss of human life or a big damage to the property. the systems are sometimes considered only mission critical, with mission being very expensive. A Mission Critical System needs study real time software which is highly complex and is vital for the success of the mission. the mission capability depends on this software and proves catastrophic in case of any failure. the software design of real-time system is very complex. To keep in pace with today's modern computing technology the real-time software should adopt new software design methodologies. this paper brings out a comparison of various design methodologies that has evolved over time. the shortcomings of each method to satisfy the requirements of real-time system and the need for a generalized approach as Design patterns.

the advances in IT sector, cloud computing, the wide usage of sensors and mobile devices, and the Internet-of-things (IoT) made our world looks like a small town. these rapid developments keep us connected all the day and seven days a week. Also, the IoT enables the connection of the devices around us (including different sensors) to the internet via different wireless and wired communication technologies. these networked sensors can be used to collect different types of data from different applications (healthcare, agriculture, civil and social life) and send it for processing and extraction of appropriate decisions. the mobile cloud computing technology is an efficient solution to process different types of collected data and respond with the required answer in real time situations where the quick response is very important. In this paper, we build a multipurpose integrated sensors system. this integrated system consists of networked sensors for different purposes and applications. For example, the sensors can be health sensors to measure the pulse and blood pressure of patients, or it can be sensors to measure the temperature to indicate a fire accident. the networked sensors will transfer the sensed data through wireless technologies to a Cloud for processing and notifying the listed users to take the proper action.

Current industrial systems need to interact with the surrounding environment in order to provide more efficiency. In such systems, used software applications must be strong enough to answer run-time needs. Context-aware applications seem to be an appropriate solution that can satisfy adaptation to the continuous changes. Safe reconfigurations require the respect of tasks deadlines and the avoidance of blocking. However, existing solutions are still insufficient and lack many important services. In this paper, we propose a new context-aware framework for developing control applications in dynamically changing environment. We focus on respecting real-time as well as functional constraints. the proposed framework structure provides simple reconfiguration handling and boosts the awareness of applications. this paper describes the definition of the proposed framework and its design. To prove the validation of the new approach, we have performed a case study and simulations.

In this paper we present the design considerations of lightweight encryption algorithm. Our aim is to demonstrate how to achieve lightweight block ciphers efficient software performance for low-resource embedded devices. Several lightweight block ciphers are proposed;we selected the most recent and suitable for low-resource embedded systems such as RFID tags. In this work, we analyzed the software implementation of lightweight block ciphers using FELICS (Fair Evaluation of Lightweight Cryptographic systems) a benchmarking framework which computes execution time, RAM consumption and ROM occupation on two largely used devices: 8-bit AVR microcontroller and 16-bit MSP microcontroller. Using the same evaluation conditions, we selected the most suitable ciphers for low-resource devices.

this position paper introduces the vision of Dispersed Automation, a novel approach for reprogramming the omnipresent Industrial Internet of things (IIoT) devices in critical infrastructure for the co-execution of general-purpose computation workloads in an optimal and reliable manner. the key observation is that IIoT devices are available in large quantities in critical infrastructure (e.g., micro-grids, water management and treatment, energy generation and transmission, manufacturing, buildings, and traffic) but are often underutilized due to the conservative allocation of resources, static task assignment, and lack of exploitation of parallelism that is intrinsic in redundant hardware. Dispersed Automation can give new life to IIoT devices, some of them as powerful as general-purpose computers, and can make them accessible for the co-execution of various computational workloads while dynamically adapting to different applications and operational environments. Two key technical innovations will make this possible: the use of a domain-specific language, and on-channel computation. this paper shows how Dispersed Automation can be an enabling technology for the implementation of smart manufacturing systems.

the increasing need for computing power today justifies the continuous search for techniques that decrease the time to answer usual computational problems. To take advantage of new hybrid parallel architectures composed by multithreading and multiprocessor hardware, our current efforts involve the design and validation of highly parallel algorithms that efficently explore the characteristics of such architectures. In this paper, we propose an automatic tuning methodology to easily exploit multicore, multi- GPU and coprocessor systems. We present an optimization of an algorithm for solving triangular systems (TRSM), based on block decomposition and asynchronous task assignment, and discuss some results.

Presently, failures and malfunctions of embedded systems can cause serious problems. A highly safe and reliable system requires the ability to deal with failure and malfunction. Furthermore, the sophistication and complexity of real-time systems are increasing with the evolution of technology. We propose a highly reliable real-time operating system (RTOS). the proposed RTOS has a fault detection function for the MicroController Unit (MCU) for real-time applications. this paper reports on the development of an extended function and a fault detection function for RTOS for high-reliability systems. A self-test function of a system and a function that improves the reliability of the MCU are offered. Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) have been developed for fault detection. By developing and running application programs on the system with the developed RTOS, we confirm that the developed RTOS startups and switches multi-tasks and executes cyclic tasks by external timer interrupts. the fault detection function is evaluated using developed application programs. By evaluating the results, we confirm the reliability of the system by the self-test function.

Industrial and robotic controllers have to execute various complex independent tasks repeatedly in real time. In order to implement these algorithms with non-linear equations, massive computational power is required in a motion control system. In this paper, inverse kinematics algorithm is selected as a test algorithm to compare performance of General Purpose Graphics Processing Unit (GPGPU) with other widely used sequential and concurrent controllers. Inverse Kinematics algorithm is implemented sequentially in Arduino Due microcontroller and FPGA is used for concurrent implementation where algorithm is designed in VHDL using combinational division. Execution speeds of these controllers are compared with NVIDIA Quadro K2200 GPU programmed with CUDA Parallel computing Architecture. Results validated that using computational power of GPU, execution time of large independent tasks is significantly decreased.

Distributed cloud applications acquire, generate tremendous amounts of stored information. the data associated with such applications are distributed widely in geographical terms. Replication services are designed to facilitate, support such cloud applications. A replication service aims to replicate data, select the most appropriate data replica from those available in order to minimize application access time. Current replica services can also exhibit an increase in data acquisition by clients resulting in slower data access. this paper proposes a Partial File Cache (PFC) strategy that minimizes the volume of data transfers under a limited cache space, provides faster data access simultaneously. Traditional caching approaches work well on networks with high latency, however, they can be expensive if an application only requires access to a small part of a large file. To improve cache utilization, our solution makes use of different techniques when caching, such as caching sections or parts of files. the system identifies user hotspots so that fit clients are selected for partial data caching to assist third party cloud storage sites. Results show significant improvement over traditional caching techniques when implemented in geographically spatial cloud environments. © 2016 ieee.
