the next generation of automobiles (also known as cybercars) will increasingly incorporate electronic control units (ECUs) in novel automotive control applications. Recent work has demonstrated vulnerability of modern car control systems to security attacks that directly impact the cybercar's physical safety and dependability. In this paper, we provide an integrated approach for the design of secure and dependable cybercars using a case study: a steer-by-wire (SBW) application over controller area network (CAN). the challenge is to embed both security and dependability over CAN while ensuring that the real-time constraints of the cybercar applications are not violated. Our approach enables early design feasibility analysis by embedding essential security primitives (i.e., confidentiality, integrity, and authentication) over CAN subject to the real-time constraints imposed by the desired quality of service and behavioral reliability. Our method leverages multi-core ECUs for providing fault-tolerance by redundant multi-threading (RMT) and also further enhances RMT for quick error detection. We quantify the error resilience of our approach and evaluate the interplay of performance, fault-tolerance, security, and scalability for our SBW case study.

Today, so-called "smart" or "intelligent" systems heavily rely on machine learning techniques to adjust their behavior by means of sample data (e.g., sensor observations). But, it will be more and more complicated or even impossible to provide those data at design-time of that system. As a consequence, these systems have to learn at run-time. Moreover, these systems will have to self-organize their learning processes. they have to decide which information or knowledge source they use at which time, depending on the quality of the information or knowledge they collect, the availability of these sources, the costs of gathering the information or knowledge, etc. With this article, we propose opportunistic collaborative interactive learning (O-CIL) as a new learning principle for future, even "smarter" systems. O-CIL will enable a "lifelong" or "neverending" learning of such systems in open-ended (i.e., time-variant) environments, based on active behavior and collaboration of such systems. Not only these systems collaborate, also humans collaborate either directly or indirectly by interacting with these systems. the article characterizes O-CIL, summarizes related work, sketches research challenges, and illustrates O-CIL with some preliminary results.

the rapid development of Internet of things and the current capabilities of high performance embedded systems have made them more attractive for the replacement of human personnel in hazardous or tedious duties. One such application is for guarding certain areas, such as the entrance of a warehouse for example. the aim of this work is to design an autonomous embedded security system for surveillance reasons. this system consists of a sentry gun and a camera. the software directing the sentry gun's actions is based on face and motion detection and face recognition. this gun locates, tracks and aims those who enter guarded areas and after verbal warning it fires, when facial recognition fails. this process is automated and works with high accuracy in real time circumstances. It also has the ability to inform its user when an intruder enters the area. the system meets the characteristics of ubiquitous computing as it is autonomous, can be used in any location and can be operated remotely via a web interface. It is hybrid because it supports two different versions of software with different hardware on each one, in order to allow the user to select the proper system version for him. the asymmetric embedded system's first version consists of a single board computer and the second version consists of a mini desktop for the computationally intensive tasks. A microcontroller is being used for high accuracy on the actuators and the system has the capability to use both USB and stereoscopic camera. © 2016 ieee.

this paper proposes a cognitive radio frequency (RF) stealth radar using phased array (PA) for surveillance applications. Since the traditional surveillance systems are accessible by intercept receivers, the series of low-gain beam is used to reduce the visibility of this system. the traditional high-gain PA antenna beam is replaced by the novel beam. And the original detection performance isnot degraded. Furthermore, we combine cognitive radar with these low-gain beam to update current operation parameters, the update scheme of closed-loop adaptively is denoted to real-time update this weighting vector for aiming to the target and compensating the Doppler shifter. through the simulation results, this paper confirms all the methods these were proposed.

Migrating legacy real-time software stacks to newer hardware platforms can be achieved with virtualization which allows several software stacks to run on a single machine. Existing solutions guarantee that deadlines of virtualized real-time systems are met but can only accommodate a reduced number of systems. therefore, this paper introduces ExVM, a new scheduling framework to maximize the number of legacy uniprocessor real-time systems able to run on a single machine. Contrary to most existing solutions, ExVM uses a flattening approach where the host schedules the virtual machine which contains the task with the earliest deadline. the real-time characteristics of tasks are obtained through introspection during the execution. We implemented this framework using Linux's SCHED_DEADLINE real-time scheduling policy in the host. Simulations using an exact schedulability test show that ExVM is able to schedule 96% of randomly generated tasksets with a utilization of at least 0.8, while state-of-the-art solutions are only able to schedule 40% of the same tasksets. Experimental evaluations performed using synthetic benchmarks and production real-time applications show that ExVM always outperforms the existing solutions, always meeting more than 80% of deadlines while these solutions fall below 50% when the utilization increases.

Remote monitoring and intelligent intervention of machines are essentials in a smart industrial environment. However, the heterogeneity of machines makes it difficult to construct solutions for this purpose. this work aims to describe how to provide smart industrial environments using Smart Gateways, RESTful Web Services, and Cloud computing. In the proposed solution, a Smart Gateway is responsible for representing a given machines' resources as RESTful Web Services for clients and Web applications, sending monitored data to a persistence service in a Cloud, while also allowing for the remote control of these machines. As a proof of concept, a smart industrial environment was developed from the considerations of a real case study at an apparel factory. Functional testing and performance evaluation confirmed the feasibility of the solution in this case study.

Traffic Level of Service (LOS) information is crucial for traffic management systems, especially in urban areas. One method to estimate traffic LoS is to use a central server system to process traffic images captured by road side cameras. However, this approach requires a high performance server system as well as high network throughput to transmit images from the cameras to the server, which results in very high system deployment cost. In this paper, we propose a cost effective distributed solution using smart cameras each of which is equipped with a low cost ARM microprocessor to estimate the LOS from the captured traffic images. the LOS of a road estimated by a corresponding camera will then be sent to a traffic information server. In this study, LOS is determined based on the average traffic flow speed and the road occupancy. the Lucas Kanade optical flow method is used to estimate the speed of the traffic flow. In order to have a real time processing on a low cost platform, the whole LOS estimation algorithm has been optimized. the experimental results show that our optimized implementation can process traffic images in real time on an ARM Cortex-A8 platform and is 4 times faster than an OpenCV based implementation on the same platform. © 2016 ieee.

this work presents a comparison of two implementations of the last software version of the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) decoder in a single low cost processor ARM Cortex-A series using NEON architecture which is a Single Input Multiple Data (SIMD). By using this technology of optimization, the whole execution time is reduced up to x4. We have analyzed separately all the blocks in the decoder and determined the consumed time percentage of each one compared to the whole time. this allows us to detect the more time consuming blocks. then, we can find an optimal way to accelerate their functioning. © 2016 ieee.

Patient monitoring is emerging as an important application of embedded sensors network. Many wireless sensors are implanted in/on the patient body. these tiny wireless sensors make Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs). WBANs can observe physiological conditions of patient under supervision, and can provide us real-time feedback. through WBAN a patient is constantly monitored, and in case of some critical situation an immediate action should be required. In today's world most of the healthcare organizations need to modernize their IT infrastructure so that they can be able to provide safer, faster and more efficient healthcare delivery. this paper presents a new architecture based on cloudlet and software defined networking to smooth out devices and access networks heterogeneities and enable fast access for data collection and analysis through the cloud environments.
