An essential feature of successful e-commerce applications is the ability to provide the right content at the right time for the user. therefore, personalization techniques have been exploited to build adaptive applications in which the user interfaces change according to the user needs and preferences. In this work, we advocate that it is possible to achieve personalization by analyzing the behavior of the user when browsing an e-commerce application. In order to prove our hypothesis, we built a toolkit that allows the automatic gathering and analysis of client logs in real-time. Moreover, our solution provides a Web service that exposes the analysis outcome also in real-time, thus allowing the client application to adapt on-the fly according to the results provided by the toolkit. this paper presents a case study that demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach to support the construction of adaptive e-commerce applications.

Feature selection is a very important technique in machine learning and pattern classification. Feature selection studies using batch learning methods are inefficient when handling big data in real world, especially when data arrives sequentially. Online Feature Selection is a new paradigm which is more efficient than batch feature selection methods but it still very challenging in large-scale ultra-high dimensional sparse domains. In this paper, we propose a framework of online feature selection for binary classification exploiting first-order and second-order information. this framework is designed to assume an efficient and scalable online feature selection process. In the experimental studies, we adopt first-order and second-order online learning based online feature selection methods FOOL-OFS and SOOL-OFS. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the learning accuracy and time cost of different algorithms on several benchmarks and some real-world datasets.

the use of cloud computing in different application areas is growing fast. More and more functions are being moved into the cloud in order to take advantage of cloud computing strengths such as scalability, resources on demand, and usage based cost models. However, most types of embedded systems are still in an early phase of cloud adoption, with a few exceptions found in e.g., data storage and user interfaces. In this paper we present a number of challenges and opportunities when introducing cloud computing into embedded systems. In particular, we look at embedded systems with requirements on timing predictability, i.e., real-time systems. In the paper we conclude that it is possible to move a complete soft real-time system into the cloud. Moreover we see an upcoming development in cloud computing to potentially allow for hard real-time systems to be moved to the cloud.

Due to increasing demand for reconfigurability in embedded systems, real-time task scheduling is challenged by non-negligible reconfiguration overheads. We introduce the problem of real-time task scheduling under reconfiguration overhead on heterogeneous reconfigurable systems while considering the data dependencies and data communication overhead. We introduce a novel graph representation which captures the delay overhead due to data dependencies and reconfiguration. We formulate the problem as a network flow problem and provide a mixed integer linear programming solution to minimize the completion time so called makespan. Results show that our proposed scheduling improves the makespan by 24.20% (on average) in comparison with maximum-transition-overhead scheduling.

the topic-based mobile publish/subscribe (pub/sub) system has shown the potential applications in many scenarios, e.g., product coupon distribution. In this paper, we focus on the budget-constrained data dissemination services with a pre-determinated total amount of copy. A mobile user may subscribe data under different topics, but receiving a copy in any topic is enough. this is the mutually exclusive delivery requirement in many scenarios. In light of the different amounts of data and the different popularity levels of data in each topic, deciding which data should be forwarded to mobile users becomes an important problem. this paper aims to design an efficient data dissemination scheme in the aforementioned scenario, which minimizes the maximum dissemination delay, and incurs small communication overhead at the same time. We start with the offline message dissemination problem, and the corresponding optimal solution is proposed. Later, we consider the online situation, and propose a distributed data forwarding algorithm, which considers both the amount of data in different topics, mobile users' subscription, and their data forwarding abilities, respectively. the real trace driven experiments show that the proposed scheme achieves a good performance.

the standard 802.11p/wave provides communication facilities to many vehicle applications. the safety application for vehicle collision avoidance is one of the most attractive issues for industrial and research concerns. However, medium access protocols proposed by standards and research works are not dedicated to this kind of real time applications. A deterministic medium access is needed to guarantee communication delay constraints. thus, we propose an extension of the CSMA/CA medium access defined in the standard. It is an enhancement of the collision resolution procedure to be deterministic. An infrastructure with Road Side Units (RSUs) is used to manage the secured zone. It is also to complete and control communication for collision detection approach. this new protocol has the main advantage of low bandwidth utilization, low latency and deterministic communication. We have also proposed a worst case analysis model to predict communication delay in order to verify the real time constraints. Simulations are made to perform the efficiency of our protocol relative to other ones.

Internet-based video communications have been gaining increasing popularity in recent years and thus, the need for improving quality of service has become an essential requirement. this paper presents an experimental testbed that is based on the real-time media flow protocol (RTMFP). the proposed testbed enables experimental investigations of the impact of key video-quality parameters such as the frame quality, frame rate, and resolution on the video quality at various speeds of video streaming, and network conditions. It also allows for developing adaptation algorithms that can be utilized in real-time video transmission to ensure delivery of best service possible under various network conditions. the hardware and software aspects of the testbed are presented along with the practical setup and configuration commands. Some of the practical challenges faced throughout the implementation and test phases are presented. Performance of the developed prototype is assessed experimentally and some of the obtained results are also presented and discussed.

Outlier and anomaly detection are widely used in several fields of study such as social networks, statistics, and knowledge discovery. In social networks, it is useful to detect structural abnormalities which are different from the typical behavior of the social network in order to maintain the network security and privacy. In this paper, we suggest a new approach for outlier and anomalous behavior detection in social networks based on combined graph pattern matching and constraint programming. For this purpose, we utilize the Constraint Programming (CP) techniques for matching the original graph data with the graph pattern data, to detect two formalized anomalies: anomalous nodes and anomalous edges. We also introduce a neighborhood constraint formalization that aims to precise the anomaly that replaced specific node as well as the changes that it made within the networks. Finally, we present our experimental results that show the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach in terms of computational time and matching accuracy.

Fast computation, efficient memory storage, and performance on par with standard state-of-the-art descriptors make binary descriptors a convenient tool for many computer vision applications. However their development is mostly tailored for static images. To respond to this limitation, we introduce TREAT (Terse Rapid Edge-Anchored Tracklets), a new binary detector and descriptor, based on tracklets. It harnesses moving edge maps to perform efficient feature detection, tracking, and description at low computational cost. Experimental results on 3 different public datasets demonstrate improved performance over other popular binary features. these experiments also provide a basis for benchmarking the performance of binary descriptors in video-based applications.

Population aging has become a worldwide problem. Fall accidents are considered as one of the major health risks, especially for elderly people. Fall detection devices are the key to distinguish a fall from daily activities, automatically alert when a fall occurred and significantly decrease the time of rescue when the monitored patient falls down. the proposed prototype is composed of a tri-axial accelerometer communicating to a Zybo board through Inter-Integrated Circuit (I~2C) interface. A threshold-based algorithm has been implemented based on peaks acceleration detection and inactivity posture recognition after falling and executed as a standalone application on a Zynq Z-7010 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). this first implementation using Vivado and Xilinx SDK showed prominent results in terms of power consumption and time of execution.
