Fast computation, efficient memory storage, and performance on par with standard state-of-the-art descriptors make binary descriptors a convenient tool for many computer vision applications. However their development is mostly tailored for static images. To respond to this limitation, we introduce TREAT (Terse Rapid Edge-Anchored Tracklets), a new binary detector and descriptor, based on tracklets. It harnesses moving edge maps to perform efficient feature detection, tracking, and description at low computational cost. Experimental results on 3 different public datasets demonstrate improved performance over other popular binary features. these experiments also provide a basis for benchmarking the performance of binary descriptors in video-based applications.

Population aging has become a worldwide problem. Fall accidents are considered as one of the major health risks, especially for elderly people. Fall detection devices are the key to distinguish a fall from daily activities, automatically alert when a fall occurred and significantly decrease the time of rescue when the monitored patient falls down. the proposed prototype is composed of a tri-axial accelerometer communicating to a Zybo board through Inter-Integrated Circuit (I~2C) interface. A threshold-based algorithm has been implemented based on peaks acceleration detection and inactivity posture recognition after falling and executed as a standalone application on a Zynq Z-7010 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). this first implementation using Vivado and Xilinx SDK showed prominent results in terms of power consumption and time of execution.

New applications like highly automated driving, Car-2-X, software updates over the air, or vehicles as part of the internet of things raise completely new requirements to a software plat-form for the next generation of ECUs. AUTOSAR as the world-wide leading standardization organization for in-vehicle software bears this challenge and paves the way making vehicles intelligent and adaptive. Based on a set of selected use-cases, identified by the AUTOSAR partners, the challenges and the approach to master requirements for next generation cars are described. the new platform aims to support dynamic deployment of customer applications, to provide an environment for applications that require high-end computing power and to connect deeply embedded and non-AUTOSAR systems in a smooth way while preserving typical features originated in deeply embedded systems like safety, determinism and real-time capabilities. Built around existing standards such as POSIX, the AUTOSAR Adaptive Platform will complement automotive specific functionalities enabling the platform to run in an automotive network.

Massive data applications such as E-science applications are characterized by complex treatments on large amounts of data which need to be stored in distributed data centers. In fact, when one task needs several datasets from different data centers, moving these data may cost a lot of time and cause energy's high consumption. Moreover, when the number of the data centers involved in the execution of tasks is high, the total data movement and the execution time increase dramatically and become a bottleneck, since the data centers have a limited bandwidth. thus, we need a good data placement strategy to minimise the data movement between data centers and reduce the energy consumed. Indeed, many researches are concerned with data placement strategy that distributes data in ways that are advantageous for application execution. In this paper, our data placement strategy aims at grouping the maximum of data and of tasks in a minimal number of data centers. It is based on the Formal Concept Analysis approach (FCA) because its notion of a concept respects our idea since it faithfully represents a group of tasks and data that are required for their execution. It is based on four steps: 1) Hierarchical organization of tasks using Formal Concepts Analysis approach, 2) Selection of candidate concepts, 3) Assigning data in the appropriate data centers and 4) Data replication. Simulations show that our strategy can effectively reduce the data movement and the average query spans compared to the genetic approach.

Always-on localization is an important problem for a lot of context sensitive mobile computing applications. this paper proposes WaveLoc, which effectively uses measurements from a trajectory as its fingerprint for localization. Different from traditional approaches, which use signatures from single-points for localization, we leverage signatures from a trajectory, since it offers a lot more information. However, it is much more challenging to match measurements across trajectories than from single points. To tackle this challenge, WaveLoc divides the problem into the following two steps: (i) identify a user's current trajectory by matching its measurements with those in the training traces (trajectory matching) and (ii) localize the user on the trajectory (localization). the core requirement of both steps is an accurate and robust algorithm to match two time-series that may contain significant noise and perturbation due to differences in speed, mobility, devices, and environment. WaveLoc addresses these by performing multi-level wavelet analysis of the measurements and applying an enhanced Dynamic time Warping (DTW) alignment to the wavelet coefficients. Using both indoor and outdoor experiments, we demonstrate that WaveLoc is accurate and power efficient.

To provide complete vehicle information protection mechanism, this work proposes a self-adaptive system for vehicle information security applications (SAV). Different from the conventional software-based information access method, in the SAV, the access control policies are designed by the protection matrices and implemented as reconfigurable hardware modules. the information access method becomes specific and not generic, so the risks of illegal access of vehicle information can be reduced. To not only meet real-time requirements but also enhance hardware resource utilization, the cryptographic functions in the SAV are also implemented as reconfigurable hardware modules. thus, the SAV can adapt its access control policies and cryptographic functions at runtime to different system requirements. Our experiments have also demonstrated the SAV can accelerate by up to 3.78x the processing time required by using the software-based design. Compared to the conventional embedded system design, the SAV can also reduce 27.1% of slice registers and 26.5% of slice LUTs in the Xilinx Virtex-5 XC5VLX110T FPGA.

the Focal-Plane Image Processing area aims to bring processing elements as near as possible to the pixels and to the camera's focal-plane. Most of the works reported in the literature uses only simple processing elements, in general analog ones, with few flexibility. With the technology advances, a new generation of Vision Processors is emerging. It is expected that multi/many-core systems will be integrated to the pixel sensors, offering several opportunities for parallelism exploration, resulting in high performance and flexible processing systems. the programmability is one of the main problems in this area, since most programmers are not able to create parallel algorithms and applications. In this work, we propose a methodology to the design and programming of many-core focal-plane vision processors. the application is described using a Domain Specific Language, from which the parallelism characteristics are extracted. Afterwards, a new abstract model is derived using techniques such as Program Slicing (PS) and Task-Graph Clustering (TGC). the abstract model is then transformed in a SystemC/TLM2.0 description, in order to allow for different timing accuracy simulations. the results of the simulations are used together with an ASIP design tool in order to determine both the microarchitecture of processing elements and the communication structure of the new system. Finally, from the model derived before, a new source code is generated and programmed into the new platform. In this context, the main concepts and ideas are described in this work, as well as some partial results.

this paper explores the behavior of parallel forkjoin tasks on multicore platforms by resorting to a semi-partitioned scheduling model. this model offers a promising framework to embedded systems which are subject to stringent timing constraints as it provides these systems with very interesting properties. the proposed approach consists of two stages-an offline stage and an online stage. During the offline stage, a multi-frame task model is adopted to perform the forkjoin task-to-core mapping so as to improve the schedulability and the performance of the system, and during the online stage, work-stealing is exploited among cores to improve the system responsiveness as well as to balance the execution workload. the objective of this work is twofold: (1) to provide an alternative technique that takes advantage of the semi-partitioned scheduling properties by offering the possibility to accommodate forkjoin tasks that cannot be scheduled in any pure partitioned environment, and (2) to reduce the migration overhead which has shown to be a traditional major source of non-determinism in global approaches. the simulation results show an improvement of the proposed approach over the state-of-the-art of up to 15% of the average response-time per task set.

When integrating AUTOSAR software on an automotive ECU, errors may occur due to the large number of modules involved and/or improper timing. these errors manifest at the application level complicating the test and verification process. Since AUTOSAR has a layered architecture, it is often cumbersome to identify sources of errors. In this paper, to help integrating software on an ECU, we propose a technique to verify functionality and timing of generated AUTOSAR modules in a semi-automated manner. Our technique consists in defining test cases based on the interface descriptions of AUTOSAR modules and application software. this allows reliably identifying AUTOSAR modules affected by functional and/or timing errors and simplifies the test and verification process. We illustrate the benefits by our technique by means of a case study performed on the real hardware.
