the introduction of multi-core computing platforms aims at providing more computing resources and additional interfaces to answer the needs of new automotive control strategies with respect to computing performances and connectivity (e.g. connected vehicle, hybrid powertrains). At the same time, the parallel execution and resulting resources and timing conflicts require a paradigm change for the embedded software. Consequently, efficient migration of legacy software on multi-core platform, while guaranteeing at least the same level of integrity and performance as for single cores, is a significant challenge. the contributions of this paper are (1) to provide a state-of-practice survey on multi-core CPUs and operating systems for the automotive domain, and (2) based on this survey to provide guidelines for the migration of legacy SW. Finally the related challenges and opportunities for the development of high-integrity control systems on multi-cores, as platform for dependable systems are discussed.

We develop and describe some algorithms dedicated to people characteristic movement type detection using ultra wide band radar. Derived methods are implemented in real time system where breath detection and its basic parameters e.g. frequency and depth are estimated. We present also some crucial details of software implementation where we deal with radar signal acquisition and processing in real time. Presented method has many interesting applications in healthcare: noninvasive respiration or heartbeat monitoring and even though the wall measurement. Unlike camera radar respects anonymity. All development was made as Radcare project.

Parallel computing on heterogeneous multiprocessor architecture is a new technique used to tackle the complexity of actual media applications. Such technique is used on an embedded architecture composed of 2ARMs coupled to a GPu. In this paper, an approach for real time Viola and Jones face detection algorithm using CPU-GPU based platform is presented. First, the application is implemented and parallelized on two identical ARM CortexA9 CPUs using tasks and data levels parallelism. this technique does not achieve the timing objectives. To ensure greater performance while reducing energy ratio, we extend our parallelization technique to support a GPU as an accelerator to perform non graphical tasks. OpenCL, the heterogeneous parallel programming model, is used to ensure communication between CPU and GPU.

this paper addresses the problem of parallelizing existing single-rate Simulink models for embedded control applications on multi-core architectures considering communication cost between blocks on different CPU cores. Utilizing the block diagram of the Simulink model, we derive the dependency graph between the different blocks. In order to solve the scheduling problem, we describe a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation for optimally mapping the Simulink blocks to different CPU cores. Since the number of variables and constraints for MILP solver grows exponentially when model size increases, solving this problem in a reasonable time becomes harder. For addressing this issue, we introduce a set of techniques for reducing the number of constraints in the MILP formulation. By using the proposed techniques, the MILP solver finds solutions that are closer to the optimal solution within a given time bound. We study the scalability and efficiency of our consisting approach with synthetic benchmarks of randomly generated directed acyclic graphs. We also use the Fault-Tolerant Fuel Control System demo from Simulink and a Diesel engine controller from Toyota as case studies for demonstrating applicability of our approach to real world problems.

embedded computing systems are very vulnerable to anomalies that can occur during execution of deployed software. Anomalies can be due for example to faults, bugs or deadlocks during executions. these anomalies can have very dangerous consequences on the systems controlled by embedded computing devices. embedded systems are designed to perform autonomously, i.e. without any human intervention, and thus the possibility to debug an application to manage the anomaly is very difficult if not impossible. Anomaly detection algorithms are the primary means of being aware of anomalous conditions. In this paper we describe a novel approach to detect an anomaly during execution of one or more applications. the algorithm exploits the differences between the behavior of memory sequences generated during executions. Memory reference sequences are monitored in real time using the PIN tracing tool. the memory reference sequence is divided into randomly selected blocks and spectrally described with the Discrete Cosine Transform.

the development of highly integrated, safety-relevant automotive functions is faced with the challenge of increasing complexity resulting from product customization and variants in implementation through software-hardware solutions. In order to reduce development time in this scenario, systematic reuse of engineering artifacts is important. this paper introduces a systematic model-based engineering approach that combines architecture design, requirements engineering, and safety analyses with variant management and provides evaluation results to address these challenges. In detail, this tool-supported approach achieves a new level of seamless safety engineering across variants by enabling typical safety lifecycle artifacts to be represented in a homogeneous, UML-compliant model notation. Safety-related information is no longer scattered in various isolated tools and formats, but instead consolidated and integrated. A further and decisive benefit of this notation is that variability can now be expressed and managed easily by regular variant management tools with UML adapters. Together with change-impact analysis, which is facilitated equally the ultimate goal of developing and maintaining modular safety cases can be achieved. Examples on how to use this model-based safety engineering method for variant-rich automotive functions are presented for a hazard analysis, a fault tree analysis and for a safety concept specification.

Computational video multi-camera systems allow novel applications such as stereo-vision and view interpolation. the computational-as well as communication and storage requirements for real-time multi-camera video are huge. High quality stereo-and view interpolation applications require the accurate combination of detailed image features in two or more cameras. the use of lossy video compression algorithms often lowers the accuracy of small details and textures that are probably not noticeable by a human viewer, but that are crucial in disparity calculations, matching, video stitching and 3D model synthesis. this paper makes a quantitative comparison of two lossless video compression methods. the intention is to use them for efficient implementation in System-on-Chip (SoC) architectures in computational camera systems. the methods compared are based on predictive-corrective compression and Huffman encoding as well as derived methods. For efficient hardware implementation alternative methods for the use of the Huffman coding are investigated. the comparison includes the use of Huffman encoding parameters from previous frames in the compression of current frames.

the correct functioning of real-time systems depends not only on the logically correct response, but also the time when it is given. this type of application is increasingly present today and the processing demand is such that complex processors are needed. Unfortunately general purpose processors are not well suitable for hard real-time applications due to their non-deterministic behavior caused by the use of cache memories, branch prediction, speculative execution and out-of-order pipelines. the goal of this work is to investigate pipeline performance of VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) architectures for real-time systems with an in-order pipeline, a direct mapped instruction cache and a scratchpad memory to accelerate data memory. the prototype was implemented in VHDL considering the HP VLIW ST231 ISA. We present quantification of WCET and average-case performance and discuss some of the performance loss on using only pure deterministic design.

To reduce hardware requirements and costs recent applications apply sensorless methods to drive electrical machines. However, such methods have a high demand on CPU resources, reducing the possibility to integrate further applications into the system. Multi-core architectures potentially provide the necessary performance for joint integration of sensorless driving methods and additional, typically outsourced, applications. However, such parallel execution cart induce cross-core interference which. can corrupt the time-critical execution of the drive controller and reduce the overall system performance. In this paper we evaluate a speed control application for a sensorless drive and quantify its sensitivity to cross-core interferences. this allows estimating the influence of genuine parallelism on the sensorless drive functions. the same applies to the performance when integrating high-level functions into the same system. the evaluation is carried out on a practically oriented multi-core platform with safety features to directly apply the results for practical use. It is shown that the sensorless algorithm suffers from a maximum slowdown of 6.8% while the frequency of the speed control can he increased by up to 75%.
