Separating the dynamic power and leakage power components from total microprocessor power can enable new optimizations for cloud computing. To this end, we introduce FirmLeak, a new framework that enables accurate, real-time estimation of microprocessor leakage power by system software. FirmLeak accounts for power-gating regions, per-core voltage domains, and manufacturing variation. We present an experimental evaluation of FirmLeak on a POWER7+ microprocessor for a range of hardware parts, voltages and temperatures. We discuss how this can be used in two applications to manage power by 1) improving billing of energy for cloud computing and 2) optimizing fan power consumption.

Ethernet is emerging for many distributed real-time applications in industrial environments. It is also considered for substation automation in power systems with regard to IEC 61850 offering many advantages over conventional parallel wiring with analog signals. Mission-critical for protection and control systems as well as other demanding applications is the end-to-end delay of messages. Beside the frame duration of an Ethernet message on the physical layer, the overall delay is affected by processing times of communication stacks and applications significantly. A timing analysis of Ethernet frames is possible with standard network interface cards (NICs) but a high-resolution is only given with specific hardware or professional network analyzers. Furthermore, to determine stack processing delays, immediate signals are required from the application prior to the transmission and after retrieval additionally. this paper proposes a method to measure delays of Ethernet communication with a common transceiver. the achievable timing resolution is less than 0.1 mu s using a typical micro-controller unit (MCU).

A comparison of two variants of CLEAN, a time-domain serial subtractive deconvolution algorithm, is presented. Appropriate statistical metrics for assessing the relative merit of the deconvolution technique are identified in the context of intra vehicle ultra wide band transmission, and the better variant was selected based on its performance over a standard ieee channel simulation testbed. the chosen method is then applied to extract important channel characteristics for a real-world channel sounding experiment performed inside a passenger car.

this document describes the study of an artificial neuron configuration in a dynamically programmable Analogue Signal Processor (dpASP) device with embedded Field Programmable Analogue Array (FPAA) technology. the linear and non-linear neurons were studied and investigated with respect to device capacity and time of signal processing. A Programmable Analogue Controller (PAC) was used to conduct the research. the in-site investigation shows the features and limitations of the switched capacitor technology as well the advantages of hardware-based analogue signal processing. In the dark silicon era, a fundamental problem is: given a real-time computation demand represented by a set of independent applications with their own power consumption, how to determine if an on-chip multiprocessor system is able to respond to this demand and maintain its reliability by keeping every core within the safe temperature range. In this paper, we first present a novel thermal model for the prediction of chip peak temperature assuming the application-to-core mapping is determined. the mathematical model combines linearized steady-state thermal model with empirical scaling factors to achieve significantly improved accuracy and running efficiency. Based on it, a MILP-based approach is presented to find the optimal application-to-core assignment such that the computation demand is met and the chip temperature is minimized. At last, if the minimized temperature still exceeds the safe temperature threshold, a novel heuristic algorithm, called temperature threshold-aware result handling (TTRH), is proposed to drop certain applications selectively from immediate execution, and lower the chip peak temperature to the safety threshold. Extensive performance evaluation shows that the MILP-based approach can reduce the chip peak temperature by 9.1 degrees C on average compared to traditional techniques. TTRH algorithm can further lower the chip peak temperature by 1.38 degrees C on average with the application dropping rate of less than 4.35%.

Explosions in coal mines are considered a feared danger to miners and a to mine itself. the combination of an accumulated methane and a coal dust causes unexpected explosions. this contribution presents an electronic device, that detects an explosion and initiates impulse for a following system actuator for minimizing;the explosion impact. the paper introduces internal description of detection device, risk analysis and fault tree analysis. the fault tree analysis is simulated in A.L.D. RAM Commander. We present an experimental result set of laboratory tests and also testing in a real explosion of methane and coal dust mixture conditions. Recently, the use of LED-based visible light communication (VLC) for short-range and low data rate applications has become an area of great interest for research and development communities. LED-based VLC systems consume less power and offer more secure communication link when compared with other wireless technologies. this article introduces the use of LED-based VLC systems for "point-and-grab" applications using smartphones and photodiodes. Different real life point-and-grab application scenarios, with one in particular relating to restaurant-consumer communication, are discussed where LED-based VLC can act as potential replacement for existing bluetooth or infrared technologies. A low cost photodiode dongle is developed to be used with smartphones which can provide reasonably high data rates for new possible commercial applications discussed in this paper. the data rates achieved by the developed test bed supplants the existing limitations on rates achievable by smartphone cameras. Experiments with the test bed are performed with the achievable rates of 1 Mbps which are greater than the highest achievable rates of up to 3 kbps with smartphone camera only. the proposed test-bed is also used for experimental measurement of different design characteristics like baud rate and symbol error rate, and to study the impact of several design parameters like tilt angle and range on the former characteristics.

this paper presents an embedded system for fall detection using accelerometric data and depth maps. A real-time processing of motion data and depth maps is realized on a low-cost PandaBoard platform. In order to achieve detection of human falls with low computational cost the system performs a depth-based inferring about the fall event when person's movement is above some preset threshold. the performance of the system has been evaluated on our publicly available dataset consisting of synchronized depth maps and motion data. To investigate the detection accuracy in depth maps from different camera views the image sequences were simultaneously recorded by two Kinect sensors, where one of them was placed in the front of the scene, whereas the second one was located on the ceiling. the motion data were acquired by a body-worn accelerometer and transmitted wirelessly to the processing unit, responsible for both synchronization and recording or processing of the data.

this paper presents a new communication architecture to enable the remote control, monitoring and debug of embedded-system controllers designed using IOPT Petri nets. IOPT Petri nets and the related tools (http://***)have been used as a rapid prototyping and development framework, including model-checking, simulation and automatic code generation tools. the new architecture adds remote operation capabilities to the controllers produced by the automatic code generators, enabling quasi-real-time remote debugging and monitoring using the IOPT simulator tool. Furthermore, it enables the creation of graphical user interfaces for remote operation and the development of distributed systems where a Petri net model running on a central system supervises the actions of multiple remote subsystems.

the Future Internet (FI) era dictates the deployment of high complexity systems having a variety of properties such as adaptivity, self configuration and self optimization. this paper discusses on the design and deployment of an autonomic management framework, targeting real-time optimization of operational properties in a smart building cognitive environment. the architecture of an autonomous smart building system is described, focusing on diverse requirement satisfaction, including response time, energy efficiency and users' satisfaction. the main systems' components are introduced along with a indicative operation scenario that demonstrates multi - criticality issues explored. the scope of the paper is a) to point out challenges in building an autonomic smart building environment to support multi-critical applications and b) to indicate efficient solutions for dealing with them, promoting self-configuration and self-optimisation properties.
