In recent years, a substantial work has been devoted to the design of cryptographic protocols with reduced computational load and power consumption. However, implementations are scarce, especially in case of embedded devices. In this paper, we discuss the implementation over elliptic curves of a two-party key agreement protocol for the Raspberry PI platform. the protocol requires just one round to derive an (implicit) authenticated session key, and it makes use of identity-based cryptography, which fits very well some application scenarios, allowing for more efficiency than the certificate-based approach. Our implementation takes advantage of the portability and security features of the Java programming language and, due to a modular design, it can be easily extended to encompass other identity-based schemes and protocols. We run a set of tests in order to verify the correctness of our implementation and to measure its performances in term of computing time. Our results demonstrate that getting secure communications using low cost, resource constrained devices is viable to the point that it can be used for real world applications.

Multi-cluster systems with real-time networks are gaining increasing importance to address the communication needs of large-scale embedded systems in different domains such as automotive, factory automation and health-care systems. At the same time, heterogeneous application subsystems with varying criticality levels require different timing models including time-triggered communication, event-triggered communication with rate-constraints and best-effort communication. An example is the coexistence of periodic control functions, event-triggered comfort functions and streaming multimedia services of in-vehicle electronic systems. this paper presents a scheduling algorithm as well as a simulation and verification framework for such multi-cluster systems. We support the allocation and scheduling of time-triggered and rate-constrained services to processing elements and communication links of multiple time-Triggered Ethernet (TTE) clusters. the simulation and verification framework supports the automatic generation of test cases based on generic scenario parameters including the connectivity degree as well as the number of clusters, processing elements, switches and services. thereby, we enable a comprehensive evaluation of the scheduling algorithm for use cases of varying complexity. In addition, the simulation and verification framework is a foundation for the systematic comparison of different scheduling algorithms including the evaluation of schedulability and runtime for different types of scenarios.(1)

Future applications demand military radio systems that can handle higher frequencies and greater bandwidth,whereas the real-time and high-precision radio frequency(RF)spectrum detection can be hardly realized due to the volume and power consumption of traditional RF devices. through the development of photonic technology, it is perceived that photonic technology will become the new analog signal processing platform with the advantages of the high bandwidth and low loss,so that the function of perception and frequency conversion could be separated from the DSP, thus avoiding digital processing of mass and high energy consumption. In this paper, the received microwave signal is loaded onto the optical frequency comb(OFC) wave, and then the RF signal is input to the Fabry-Perot filter, which has a comb transmission spectrum and filters for a particular frequency periodically. Moreover, the filter has a different free spectral range(FSR) from the OFC. It is for this reason that the frequency of the N-th carrier of OFC differs from that at the N-th transmission peak of the Fabry-Perot filter, and the OFC after comb filtering is spatially divided into different channels by a wavelength division multiplexer. the power of each channel can be obtained by photoelectric detectors and used to estimate the frequency of the RF microwave signals. As the simulation demonstrated, the solution can measure RF microwave signals in a real-time, high-speed, parallel and broadband way.

the increasing demand for adaptive and flexible machines and plants raises the need for components and systems that can be dynamically reconfigured. therefore, production facilities are especially needed to allow for connecting or disconnecting machine modules at runtime to allow for flexible production orders and varying product types. Many highly sophisticated approaches e.g. multi-agent systems and service-oriented architectures support reconfiguration at the application layer, but the communication link between the components' hardware has not yet been appropriately considered. However, the deterministic behavior of a field-bus is required to perform such a system reconfiguration of plants without violating the maximum cycle time of control applications. Considering these constraints, two different approaches are presented and discussed in this paper - a single-master and a multi-master approach. Based on an extension of the standard EtherCAT state machine, it is shown how flexibility can increase by reconfiguration of the field-bus communication. An evaluation of the reconfiguration time illustrates the impact to the control application.

In the majority of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) applications, such as image, audio and video processing, the final result is interpreted by human senses;and, the fact of confined perception of human senses declines the strict restriction on accuracy. thus, by adopting the emerging concept of approximate computing, we propose an approximate radix-2 hybrid redundant Multiply-and-Accumulate (ApproxMAC) unit which stems a novel Speed-Power-Accuracy-Area (SPAA) metrics. the Approx-MAC unit attains tremendous improvements in computational performance, energy efficiency and silicon area with a trivial degradation in the output quality. To inspect the effectiveness of the proposed approach in real-time DSP applications, we demonstrate an ApproxMAC unit embedded JPEG-E-X IP core architecture. the ApproxMAC unit with 40 approximate LSBs ensures 7.177x and 1.526x speedup, 1.594x and 4.163x energy efficiency, and 1.131x and 1.277x silicon area improvements over binary and hybrid redundant MAC units, respectively. Moreover, the ApproxMAC unit with 40 approximate LSBs decorates power-precision and delay-precision metrics by 14.71% and 32.95%, respectively.

In applications with strict requirements regarding reliability and real time capability such as factory and process automation, it is critical to detect sources of interference that might corrupt data packets leading to retransmissions and delays. To tackle this issue we propose a method for measuring and quantifying radio interference using higher-order statistics. Unlike traditional energy detectors that suffer from several shortcomings in noisy environments, higher-order statistics are robust and do not suffer from threshold uncertainties. We present results of experimental measurements as well as simulations for detecting mutual interference using a normalized fourth-order moment named the kurtosis. the proposed method is independent of the received power and is efficient for detecting low-level interference compared to energy detectors. Results show that not only the presence of interference could be detected but also its strength. As a use case, the proposed method has been applied to Bluetooth mutual interference in this work. In can however be extended to other standards and scenarios.

Single microcontroller embedded systems cannot easily satisfy the computational requirements of systems observing physical phenomena via multiple channels at high sampling rates. Flash FPGAs can provide the necessary trade-off between adaptivity and computational power, however, fewer developers are familiar with them. thus, we propose a soft multi-core architecture in the fabric forming a loosely coupled network with a queue-based messaging framework for inter-core communication. this platform provides parallel improvements ( as per Amdahl's Law) and a familiar Harvard abstraction. the nesC language was chosen for programming, as it enables modularity and assignment of independent tasks to cores. the single core development environment was augmented to help with the transition to the new architecture. A cycle accurate system simulator, called Avrora, was enhanced to fully support multi-core platforms and whole sensor networks. the architecture provides better power consumption and response time properties for time critical applications by effectively pipelining tasks.
